It's time to start going through a variety of common viruses, so let's start with the most common one of them all, the one that most often causes the common cold. It's called Rhinovirus, and it is a member of the picornavirus family. What does that mean? What are these like? How do they operate? Let's learn all about rhinoviruses!

IIRC, some decades ago the US Army conducted a hand washing experiment to see if the incidence of cold-type infections could be reduced by increasing the frequency of hand-washing. 2 groups of several thousand soldiers either washed as usual, or washed at prescribed times in addition to their normal routine. The answer was yes. I like the hair-cut Dave, first chance to visit the barber since quarantine was enacted? :)

Great videos professor Dave! Question. You mentioned that non enveloped viruses are particularly immune to detergents. Rhinoviruses are non enveloped, so why does washing hands make a difference in its control? I know you mentioned that rhinoviruses are less hardy than their other picornavirus brethren, and you said that low pH and temperature exceeding 33C are enough to destroy them, but the hand-washing environment of soap and water isn't usually that inclement. I'd be curious to know the chemical mechanism through which washing hands etc helps?

Maybe thats why they said it kills 99% of germs. Besides you are still washing the virus off your hands. And soap helps this cause it makes water wetter.

@@12outland12 soap makes water... wetter...? 🤔
@12outland12
@12outland12 2 жыл бұрын
@@zcecp49 yeah it technically does. Soap breaks up the surface tension of water. This causes the water to spread out and more easily cover the surface of whatever you are getting wet. Think about it, soap itself is not slippery. But when you add water, the soap prevents the water from sticking to itself and instead sticks to your hands making them wetter. Seriously google it, it is true.
@chickennoodle6620
@chickennoodle6620 2 жыл бұрын
Washing your hands work because of the mechanical action. Soap and water removes oils on your skin which the virus may stick to, which whilst it doesn’t kill the virus, flushes it away from your hands

Well....... I guess there must be some mechanism by which a virus recogonizes its own genetic material. If u talk about bacteriophages, during the LYSOGENIC cycle, it sometimes happens that a part of the bacterial genome gets into the genome of the new virions and gets transmitted to other bacteria.

I'm not Dave, but... 1. Because of their exposure to outside air, the tissues of the upper respiratory tract are often significantly below core body temperature. 2. The core body temperature threshold for hypothermia is typically around 35 °C. 3. While in the body, rhinovirus is constantly regenerated. The virions don't have to "survive" for long to maintain the infection.

Is "tutorial" the right word for these videos? Typically that word is used when giving instruction, this is education, offering information--not instruction... I would go as far as to call him a "private tutor" (as its his own project), but even still, does tutorial really match??

Wikipedia: A tutorial is a method of transferring knowledge and may be used as a part of a learning process.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains thanks for the reply. I think Merriam-Webster does you even more justice: 1: a paper, book, film, or computer program that provides practical information about a specific subject 2: a class conducted by a tutor for one student or a small number of students
