(Note: Permission to use Love's song segments granted by the copyright holder, the Interviewee) The setting was the Sunset Strip, Hollywood, in the mid 1960s. The Whisky a Go Go and clubs up and down the street were the ultimate showcase for eclectic bands that brought together folk, rock, jazz and blues. At the forefront of this new wave was a group called Love. A wildly experimental band started by lyricist/founder Arthur Lee and guitarist Johnny Echols.
This comprehensive interview with Johnny Echols covers all the bases, from the inception of Love and how Johnny worked with artists like Jimi Hendrix and Billy Preston, to the recording of the first proto-punk rock single, “7 and 7 Is." It continues to the groundbreaking album, “Forever Changes,” still rated the number one rock album of all time by the British music press.
Johnny riffs with incredible stories and anecdotes about Little Richard, The Beatles, Jim Morrison, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Charlie Manson, Neil Young, The Monkees and many more. It's a great trip down memory lane for those who were there, and for those who wish they were -- the lowdown on so many historic musical figures. Johnny Echols was there every step of the way.

Love is the deepest, best kept secret of the music industry. I was working as a dishwasher at a restaurant in Uptown Mpls. and a server who I talked to on break and drinking after work said he was really into eclectic 60's hippy rock. I had just discovered Love's catalog at some of the local rare/collector vinyl shops and turned him onto it. He came back to work with paisley lightning bolts shooting from his eyes, couldn't thank me enough for introducing him to Love.

Love was fantastic! 7 and 7 Is was one of those rare songs, the first time I heard it I was transported. (This was on the jukebox in a slot car place in Dallas, maybe 1966?) I was 13, and it just blew me away.

Thanks for this interview. Very few bands could match Love in that or our time. Forever Changes is a true masterpiece, as well as prior album (half of that one), and I have been obsessed with this for many years. Arthur Lee could write lyrics that are truly remarkable.

I first discovered the group 'Love' thru an interview I read with Jim Morrison in Tiger Beat magazine from late 1967. They were asking him a bunch of questions and one of them was what was his favorite Rock Band and he said "Love." I wasn't sure if he wasn't just being al summer of love, flower child at the time, and saying that, you know, love was the best music, but I looked it up anyway, and there it was, a group called Love. Forever Changes was the first of their albums I got and I was blown away. Regrettably, I wasn't as enthusiastic over their other albums since they did not compare to Forever Changes. I list Love as one of my favorite groups along with the Beatles and the Doors, still.

Yeah, Love's other albums have some great songs but they are less consistent. I only like the Doors first album - one of the greatest debuts ever. So great. Never really got into their singles and then the lizard tongue songs were not for me.

Thank you Johnny so much for this incredible interview! Our Bellingham band in the '60's did Love as well as Baby Lemonade now,, turning on many to Arthur's songs. I could actually channel his voice at age twenty almost exactly! I saw Love play in Vancouver 1970 on Valentines Day, fronting for Quick Silver. Sadly, they were booed off the stage after their set, as the crowd wanted to hear the main band over Arthur which really pissed him off! I went out back to meet him but he growled at us as he was driven away in a station wagon. To me, Love was the greatest band ever, and always will be! God bless you Brother!

I saw Love at the Whiskey a Go Go in 1968 I believe. Also saw the Mothers of Invention. I was only beginning to make some huge changes in my mind and my life (as well as it was for so many people then). What memories smoking my first pot and go go dancers and cruising Sunset.

I don't put to much into Covert Ops BS as you can clearly here the History from a man who was actually there Johnny Echols among others. The whole CIA psyop is really laughable like there was all these feds running around whispering in their ears. It degrades their creativity. Although the Berkley anti war and free speech movements were a different story, as there were dozens of questionable people like Tim Leary and the likes who defiantly had government ties moving the society into Marxism as you can see today in the colleges and youth and a lot did bleed over into the music of the day. For the most part all those bands were started by kids at a early age driven by creativity and a desire to be rock stars or just the love of music. Oh yeah and the girls 🤣🤣

For Johnny:. Both you and Krueger are the two of the most underrated guitarists in all of music. Thanks... For Arthur: The Four Sail guitarist said that Arthur could outrock anyone when we wanted to. I find this to be true. Sooner Oldham said that Wilson Pickett came to his first Memphis session. Oldham looked out and Pickett had a golden haze surrounding his body! The gods had to be looking on Arthur, Jimi, Pickett, and yes you, Johnny, considering that amazing guitar work on "Alone Again Or"

I like the music that the Grass Roots made over the years. It is regrettable that they had stolen their name from the group that became Love. It is also regrettable that the Grass Roots had more hit songs than Love, but they were less experimental and less original than love, and also more prolific since they were a studio band for the most part, with many writers and arrangers. Still, I can't put the Grass Roots down too much because they did have many good songs.

These guys refused to tour or even play shows outside of LA. Turned down an offer to play the Monterey Pop Festival....and yet they claim the reason they never got bigger was because they had a mixed race band. Once you pull out the race card I lose a lot of respect. Also didn't help that they all started using heroin by their 3rd album.

The Love documentary Love Story has the background on this. They had offers to go to New York and elsewhere and Arthur nixed it. Johnny himself says that. Then in the Laurel Canyon doc he says the Doors got all the attention at Elektra and they were ignored which is a totally different narrative. They did play outside LA but mostly California. They went to Salt Lake city once but thats it.
