I actually agree with Karl more than Ricky and Steve on this one. The art world is analogous to The Emperor’s New Clothes. These people are not “more sophisticated,” Rick, they are just good at making you think that.

The Oscar Wilde quote is actually one of my favorite quotes. He's praising its "uselessness" because he is claiming that when something becomes utilitarian it makes it ugly.

25:05 Ricky and Steve are giving artists way too much credit here haha. They probably just decided they only cared to sculpt a certain part of the form, like a portrait that doesn't fit the full figure within it's composition. There' nothing particularly intellectual or romantic or grandiose about that. It's more like, screw it, I'll just do this part. Half the time, they just figure they'll get bored or screw it up doing the rest.

*whistle* SQUIRM! Maybe Karl should have a day-by-day calendar with classic art. Something different every day. Maybe somebody should get some dry erase board markers and draw on Karl's mirror wall. If he doesn't like the art or gets tired of it, just wipe it off and do something else.

honestly, I 100% agree with Karl's opinion on art. art should just be about people getting fulfillment out of whatever they want and it should be about expressing creativity through skill. It doesn't need to have any reason to exist outside of it's entertaining: being entertaining is justification enough. Ricky's thinking about it is such a pretentious elitist mentality to me because it's just an excuse for him and people like him to think they are better than the rest of society.it becomes less about the joy of expressing yourself creatively and skillfully and more about the prestige and the sense of self righteousness people get when they get to say "I like this thing other people aren't smart enough to like". It's the art equivalent to Mac computers and food worth thousands of dollars, it's all a bunch of fluff and flaunting to gain a superficial kind of respect.

sounds like ricky owns a rothko. and it also sounds that he has no real idea why he likes it other than the fact that it was expensive. once again ricky shows himself to be the pretentios bighead that he is and carl just tells it like it is

I rent a house, it came with 5 of those Rothko prints, red square......red square with a yellow stripe.......blue and red square........total rubbish! I imagine that the artists have bet on to make as much money as they can by doing as little as they can. I always ask, if a child aged 6, came home from school and painted the same red square, identical.......would the world’s art critics react the same and hold this child on high as a future protege?? I think not. So that then points to the purchasers of this art appreciating “the message” as opposed to the image itself. So they are paying money for “basically nothing”, because the artist has written some speech around his views of life. And more recently the artist produces their painting and says NOTHING, they wait for the critics to assign a “meaning” for them.......then the artist says.......”yeah, that’s it, yeah” and to the people who buy these pieces, I have a magic brick for sale.
