It's why Steve was always much better with Karl. He never really got angry at him or shut him down or started preaching atheism and trying to sound as intelligent as possible. Atheists often know the Bible better than many Christians, mainly because they approach it, with a critical eye, as a work of fiction. They take an academic interest in it as an important part of western civilization, and acquire a familiarity with it so they can criticize it honestly. Also, many atheists were raised in a religious faith, found fundamental flaws in it, and drifted away from religion. They still heard the same stories as children that believers did, they just stopped believing along the way.

Monkey Revenge, nothing else. The OT clearly has judgement day for sorting things out. The threat was a typical "Wait and see what happens to you after you die". Later on Catholicism introduced purgatory and limbo.. when people started asking your questions. It gave the church reason to charge money for prayers and "intercessions" with rich dead people's souls... the basis of which is now our modern day Oxford / Cambridge Universities.
