This is the first part of my new Pentatonic Workout series where I will be showing you a few different ways to practice the pentatonic scale all over the fretboard.
In this video we are breaking up the A minor pentatonic scale in all five hand positions. Those exercises will help you improve your fretboard knowledge and are great finger exercises as well.
You can download the Tab sheets and the backing track from this lesson on my Patreon page:

This is a genious way to play the pentatonic scale and in the same time move out of the "safe box" locking for moving around the frets. Great exercise - again. Thanks a lot for sharing 👌

Thanks Allan! Glad you like the lesson. This is pretty much how I like to practice all scales, arpeggios and chord inversions. It's always good to have the whole thing mapped out like that. I usually then move on another key when I've got everything under my fingers. Thanks for watching.

@@Kbald Not long ago I was into some rock songs and I encounter a barrier of 140 BPM that couldn't overcome. I realized that I need some exercises ! I found on Yt 30 min guitar workout on channel Art of Guitar and started to practice but almost all exercises are about repeating patterns of 4 notes next to each either 1234 or 1423 aka spider exercises. After a couple of days you can play everything really fast but the problem is there's no melody in what you play. So I started to learn some pentatonic scales .I started from Danny Page lesson : The fastest way to nail pentatonic scale where he shows all five pentatonic patterns . I also watch some movies about solo improvisation from Darrel Braun channel but when I started my own solo I felt like I was cheating cause playing with backtrack always makes you sound good. Finally I found your channel with this exercises that allows you to play all over the neck without backtrack and annoyance ! Thanks a lot man. I will watch all your movies as soon as I achieve mastery wit this one!

There's all kinds of variations you could come up with. On top of that, you could have your kid sister randomly display some flash cards of another key to switch to.

Hi Kbald excellent lesson thank you so much I have just subscribed. I am in intermediate trying to improve, what would be your suggestion please on the correct fingering to use? Follow your fingering on the video? i.e. I noticed you use the pinky a lot for the higher strings or is this preference? I am conflicted as some players practice the scale for the higher notes using the ring finger as better for when you bend the notes? Any advice would be appreciated. Best wishes.
@Kbald
@Kbald 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Marlon! I’m glad you enjoyed the lesson and really appreciate your feedback. In terms of fingering I would suggest that you use the same fingering I am using in the video, otherwise things could get very tricky along the way. It is true that many players mainly use their ring finger instead of the pinky and especially older players. When I have a 4-fret-pattern like these pentatonic shapes I always assign one finger to each fret but then if I need to bend a note I replace the 3rd finger with the 4th. All the best.

Great video, I am curious on the finger assignments once getting to the 15th fret and beyond. I'm not really catching it in the video exactly. I appreciate anyone that can point me in the right direction for something to clear that up. I start to get uncomfortable past the 12th fret since I don't spend much time there. I'd hate to practice what may not be the most efficient fingering, and have to adjust later.
@Kbald
@Kbald 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Juan! Glad you enjoyed the video. I tend to skip my 4th finger when playing the fingerings above the 15th fret and in this lesson I play two fingerings from the 17th fret, one starting on the 3rd finger and the other starting on the 1st finger. On the fingering starting with the 3rd I play the 17th fret with my 3rd finger and the 14th and 15th frets with my 1st finger. The other fingering starts with the 1st finger on the 17th, 2nd finger on the 19th fret and then 3rd finger on the 20th fret. Hope that helps!

@@Kbald Thanks for the response. I got the finger assignments down, and it looks like I need to spend some time there high on the fretboard before I can put the whole exercise together. Was definitely what I needed though.

I'm just now realizing that I have been doing a very flat pluck. If I tilt the picking slightly, the plucks roll of more smoothly, and it actually feels like I just lubricated that whole mechanic. It looks like you have a slight tilt to the picking. Is this for that reason?
@Kbald
@Kbald 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Juan, yes it's for that reason but I also do it to avoid the plastic sound from the pick. The attack gets much smoother with tilting the pick slightly.

Going from 8th to 16th notes is a big jump. Any ideas on how to work up to it? Would someone have to drop the backing track and just try to work it out with a metronome?
@Kbald
@Kbald 2 жыл бұрын
You could try to slow down the 16th note part with the KZfaq playback settings although using a metronome is going to be much better as you can build the speed gradually in smaller steps. You could also download the video to mp3 and slow the audio file with some slowdowner app. Transcribe is my go to app.
@onefm1

@@Kbald I think my best bet is to find or create a backing track in a DAW where I could adjust the BPM on the fly. I know metronomes work great, but practice is more enjoyable for me over backing tracks.
