Bilbo isn't the oldest hobbit, though he is at the time he sails to the Havens. There was one hobbit who had the Ring much longer, proceeded to live centuries, and his name was Smeagol. Well, he was a Stoor hobbit, but a hobbit nonetheless.
@NerdoftheRings
@NerdoftheRings 2 жыл бұрын
Great point! Many don't realize that Smeagol was in fact a hobbit and not just "hobbit-like". I suppose we should amend our phrasing to say Bilbo was the oldest in the history of the Shire.

For what's pretty much the grandfather of modern fantasy and has impacted fiction to such a diagree only Star Wars could really match it, Tolken made a really interesting decision to not have the main hero be the heroic knight that slays dragons, but a small hobbit that gets out of most problems with his mind and honestly isn't much of a fighter.

I know it may seem like an odd question, but I've always wondered what could have happened had Beorn been given The Ring for safekeeping? Maybe around the time Bilbo and Thorin's company were at his house Bilbo tells Gandalf about The Ring he found and Gollum. Gandalf may very well ask Beorn to keep it for the time being just until they know what ring it is? Beorn was known as an exceptionally powerful being and lived an isolated lifestyle with seemingly very little in terms of desire, I wonder if The Ring would even be able to tempt him? How much stronger would he become and could he begin to skin change into stronger creatures? Just an odd thought
@nicoblac9368

Beorn would’ve been a horrible keeper of the ring. He wasn’t an exceptionally powerful in the sense of other exceptionally powerful beings of Middle-Earth, he could shape shift and was physically strong that’s about it. His people were almost all wiped out by Orcs, he himself was enslaved by Orcs. A truly strong Orc party with high numbers could’ve taken him out if they ever tried especially if the ring was on line.

Just bought an 8 set of the books. Already had 2 of the LOTR books then found the hobbit and the last LOTR book at a thrift store and bought them, then the 8 books came in. Started reading the Hobbit yesterday, and already I know it is going to be a great book, and I love the way it starts off in a lighthearted way. I'm creating a spiritual successor of sorts to Tolkien's books, yin and yang, light and dark, summer and winter, adventure-romance and horror-tragedy. It doesn't use the fantasy elements of elves and orcs and dragons most fantasy books use. I've been wanting to create epic fantasies since i was a young hobbit, and 10 years later the skeleton of the world and many muscles have been formed. Tolkien will be my textbook of what a good fantasy epic should be. One will be called Sable, 1st book, and the other will be called Noble.

I think in the movie Bilbo, when he and Frodo met in Rivendell, says that he planned to go back to the Lonely Mountain, see Laketown and visit Mirkwood again, but couldn't due to age. The movie also makes it look like he arrived maybe a week before Frodo. Not terrible changes that negatively affect the plot, but the movie easily glances over the fact that many years pass between Bilbo leaving and Frodo setting out on his journey, making it look like a few days or weeks at best.

minor mention that the Hobbit films weren't 3 films of 2 hour lengths each, but rather 3 films of nearly 3 hours each (both theatrical and extended, give or take some 20 minutes). Well done. I love this video. Bilbo had arguably the best story for a Hobbit. Although he didn’t do it himself, Bilbo played a part in Middle Earth finally being rid of Sauron. If Bilbo never found the One Ring, his adventure with the dwarves would’ve failed miserably and most likely killed him. Also, if Bilbo never found the Ring, the entire fate of Middle Earth would’ve been quite dark.

@@NerdoftheRings Which Silmaril? Earendil has one. Maglor threw his into the Sea. Maedhros cast himself into a fiery pit. This last one seems to be the only possibility for that theory. Yet Beleriand sank below the ocean. So, did that Silmaril worm its way to the depths of Erebor in order to be discovered by Thrain I's miners? I would love to hear someone explain that.

@@lizzies4964 One can be a purist, and stay true to every thought and feeling of Tolkien, as best as we can decipher them, especially in an academic environment, or we can add a little of our own imagination to the mix. Such as believing that pipe weed was actually something like cannabis, as Peter Jackson portrayed it, or to stay with Tolkien's clear statement that its a type of tobacco. So the Arkenstone is a Silmaril, or pipe weed is cannabis?? Could work for some. This is fantasy, after all.

I am curious, did Tolkien ever mention what Bilbo's family actually did in the shire? It's said that they were respectable and in the adaptations it's portrayed as Bilbo being wealthy, even before the gold he brought from Erebor.

Very good video. I was always curious about exactly what adventures Bilbo had on the way home between leaving the elf king in Mirkwood and reaching Beorn's home. He journeys along the north edge of Mirkwood, by the Grey Mountains. In The Hobbit it says 'Bilbo travels in the company of the wizard and Beorn, and although most of the goblins had been killed in the battle of the five armies, the lands were still very wild in those days, and he had many adventures on his journey. But with Gandalf and Beorn with him, he was never in serious danger'. An interesting sentence. And that is all it tells of his travels, but it hints that Bilbo's trek around north Mirkwood was not quite as peaceful as a stroll across the Shire, and seems to imply that together with Beorn and Gandalf, the three of them had an interesting journey, with eventful things happening . . . Northern Bandit Chief: 'Right lads, we all set for the ambush?' Bandit: 'Are they many of them chief?' Northern Bandit Chief: 'Don't worry yourself, there's only three of them. One looks like a child, one's some sort of woodcutter, a stupid country bumkin by the looks of him, and the other is an old man who needs a walking stick. No trouble at all. We outnumber them two to one. They come along the path, we jump out and rob them. Should be over in moments!'
