I taught at college level as adjunct instructor in my field and learned there is always a wise ass in every class. It's best to address them head on and set boundaries immediately so the rest of the class does not have to waste time listen to the wise ass spewing his/her self important tidbits of information they think they have. Funny thing is this same person is the wise ass in every educators class regardless of the subject. Maybe they didn't get enough mommy time as a child so they seek attention by any means available.

Academics get disagreements all the time and they usually handle it better than in it scene. If at the time of the presentation they have nothing to refute simply say they would love to review at the new data/ evidence afterwards and make neccessary adjustment, then proceed to finish the presentations and taking other opinions. Research is a thorough process and is not just some google search w/o verification and scientific method. They are thinking of a press conference.

This is exactly how talks in academia end up going lol everyone is jealous and envious and doesn’t want someone else’s work to supersede their own. Thats why no one should ever get into academia it is a journey to despair for most.
