It's all coming together Graham. It'll look amazing when its complete. Have to admit the Model Canal Police comment, had me in stitches laughing. Hi Mickey and thanks for the comment and yes, it appears to be getting there slowly but it is getting there which is the main thing. I’m pleased the policeman bought a smile to your face - that’s exactly what it was intended to do ! 😂😂. I live in a very narrow village road with a haulage company in the next village, if you saw the size of the trucks coming past - with additional trailers on the back - then I don’t think the town needs any signage for weight or size with that dual carriageway, that’s pure luxury compared to where I live which has no signage at all ! 😉. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video, hopefully the next video will show the water installed into the lock area and canal basin. 👍🏻. Cheers. ……….Graham

Best hobby in the world Graham and boy is your model railroad a credit to the hobby. Your channel inspired me to get to work on my O scale layout, just over 12 months ago and I’m loving every minute. Thank you. Ironic isn’t it, the lake on which your model is named after, will probably be one of the final major construction projects before completing your lovely layout, (although in reality I guess you never actually ever finish tweaking them).

The canal looks great, and I'm looking forward to seeing it with water in it. However, in case you haven't had a comment from "that guy" yet, I'll try to come up with a list of complaints and possible code violations (as soon as I do some research into the proper operations of canals). On my layout I have a couple of streams, a farm pond and a mill pond. While the streams look okay, the pond on the farm turned out to be such a disaster that I might have to dig or chip it out and start over. The fact that it's mostly obscured from view by trees is a good thing, and is buying me time until I figure out what I'm doing. And for that reason the mill pond has yet to have a drop of "water".
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 8 ай бұрын
Thank you my friend for the comment and when you have done your research on possible code violations then please be gentle with me, as you know, I can’t take too many negative comments! 😂😂😂 I’m interested in how I get on with the method of having water in the canal, as I’ve not used this before then I will need to do a little experimenting first I think but if I follow the instructions on the many videos I’ve watched then with a bit of luck then it should come out reasonably ok. Excellent Graham, the water will be the icing on the cake. As a matter of interest a few years ago my daughter started doing resin art so i used resin which was coloured and was very happy with the result. A butane torch or similar instantly takes out any bubbles. I"m sure there are lots products that will give a great result. All the best.

Thank you my friend for your comment. I did use resin in my previous layout for the lake but that didn’t go too well for me, primarily because I had reaction between the resin and the PVA I used for the Scenics, what I will be using next is completely different and hopefully this will look ok once done but we shall have to see on that. I will do some testing on spare MDF suitably painted first before committing to using it on the actual lock though. Cheers. ………….Graham

Love the canal build. 50 + years ago I built a 5 x 8 feet, we still use inches and feet here across the pond, railway layout. It was based entirely on my imagination. That gave me the freedom to fully enjoy Rule 1 in model railways. It's my layout I did what I wanted. Bridge to Ferryboat Inn, great idea. As to running trains, how about the Santa Fe Chief. Hi Graham. The canal scene is fantastic, especially the pub and castle end. If I may make a suggestion, on the Forth and Clyde Canal near me the water is bridged via a walkway that is on the back of the lock gates, perhaps that would be better than a bridge blocking the view of the lovely stone tunnel at the castle? Cheers, John.

Graham, Stellar job. I hope when you consider building the rustic foot bridge you use it to cross the canel at the far end tunnel area. It would mimic "somewhat" the old bridge on my Grandparents' former farm. Their farm had a canel, or creek, cutting directly across the two pastures. The Eastern pasture was for sheep. While the Western was for horses and cows. On the west end the was a gate system a family member built similar to a crossing gate he saw in England during WW2. Also I hope you consider some young people rowing canoes. That was how we as tweens and teens used to slip away with our girlfriends. AHHHH! Excuse me. I must run. The Bobby is racing in my direction.😮😅 I totally enjoy your artistry. Jim in N.Y.,U.S.A.
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 8 ай бұрын
Hi Jim and thank you so much for your comment sir, it’s greatly appreciated as always. I have a few ideas for the bridge across to the pub, one thing is for sure though is that it won’t be anything like the blue footbridge I have just built - far too modern, so yes, a wooden or stone structure or even a swing bridge, I’m not sure yet so I will think long and hard on that before committing. I had originally discounted rowing boats or canoes on the canal until I saw a video of a canal where there was a rowing club with canoes mounted about 6 high in metal frames ! So yes you might see a canoe, if I do then you can imagine that’s you in it! 😉. Cheers. ………..Graham

This is coming together well! I've to admit, in the beginning, I was a bit skeptical, as this is quite a number of significant structures in a rather limited space, but it works out into what is just a brilliant scene. Well done! And , I think, your work with various shrubbery really helps blending this into a believable scene.
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 8 ай бұрын
Many thanks my friend and I can fully understand why you would be skeptical initially, I think it’s primarily because folk don’t quite understand what is inside my head at the time, I often spend quite a bit of time just thinking and planning the next scenes to what will work and what won’t and of course this doesn’t always come across immediately but hopefully it all turns out ok in the end - hope that makes sense. I think it also has to be remembered that this canal is only a small part of the layout as a whole and so I didn’t want this to overpower the rest of the layout and so was kept to a bare minimum in size. Cheers. ………….Graham

Hi Malcolm and thank you for the comment. Yes, canals come in all shapes and sizes with all different surroundings ranging from urban through to overgrown country narrow canals. I was watching the chap who I follow on YT the other week and he was on a canal which was extremely narrow because it was unkept, you couldn’t see the bank on either side because of the weeds and overgrown grasses - it’s a good job there wasn’t another narrow boat coming the other way, certainly no room for two to pass each other. Hi Graham. As usual I loved watching this video along with your sense of humour and attitude towrds the Canal Police! 😆 How about, when you do the pour for the canal, you stick one of the policemen in the water as though he's just been pushed in by someone (mentioning no names) who he'd pushed to far 😋 That would definitely be a giggle especially if you can find one with his hands in the air (or maybe gently heat up a models arms just enough to bend his arms up?) Also, thinking about the other side of the aquaduct reminds me of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which was 5 mins walk from where i used to live and which carrie the Llangollen canal. At the Chirk side of the aquaduct there are some interesting 'drawbridges' that I believe are well within yor skills to reproduce and would look lovely on your layout. Google 'froncysyllte drawbridge' and click the images tab and you will see what I mean. Anyway, thanks again and happy modelling 😊

Yes, I have seen the drawbridges you suggested and that did cross my mind and I have a couple of photos of them, they look fairly easy to construct but I just wondered if they would be appropriate by the pub, I can understand them being on a farmers route to get farm vehicles, animals etc from one side of the canal to the other but a little unsure about some half cut human using them safely! 😂. We shall see what I come up with, I’ve got a good idea of what I want to do there. Cheers. …………Graham
