Thanks, Matt. Wholeheartedly agree on your ideal set-up being exposed hook and light weight. I would make the argument that if you go too heavy and / or weedless, you're not throwing a Ned Rig anymore. Ned Rig is open hook, light jig head..less than 1/8 oz., small simple plastic and light line. If people don't believe that I suggest they see the video Ned himself did on the rig that bears his name. This is a finesse technique; treat it as such. Here in Florida, I have a simple answer for not getting my Ned Rig hung up very often: I don't throw it into heavy cover. I simply choose another technique for the situation. Thanks again!

Great video Matt and I totally agree about having the exposed hook being an old school tube guy up here in the True North. Unfortunately our Kawartha lake systems have a ton of weeds from cabbage, grass, lilly pads etc that I do like the EWG Texas Rig but I will use a Craw Ned bait vs the traditional Ned worm. I did tank tests and found as you did the movement is very poor on a Ned worm's tail rigged on an EWG. But put it on a craw Ned or Zman Tickler and the movement of those plastics limbs and apendages offsets nicely. That is what I use around wood and weeds and then go exposed in open water and rocks and gravel. Great to see that a PRO like you confirmed my own research. Great info as always! Thank you.

Thanks Matt, for your opinion on the ned rig hooks!! Liked the way you showed how you lose some action on the EWG hook!!👍🏻 I use both open & EWG with the EWG in laydowns or grass but may have to turn it around. Like your thoughts on the open hook and makes sense. Stay Safe & God Bless!!!

Great review of those ned types, Matt. I will say I never use Ewg on a worm type 3” bait. However if I’m fishing a zman small bugZ or crawz, I prefer it. Mainly because the action in those type baits is in the tail or claws and no worries on getting hung 👍. However if using just 3” trd or similar, it’s a exposed jig head. 🙂 My fav bed bait is that bugZ. thanks!

My favorite Ned head weight is 1/32 oz. I like the Owner Blockheads. When you have that no feel presentation is when it's at its best in my opinion. It's takes a little getting used to but I've noticed over the years that you can really only imagine what the bait is doing but it doesn't matter. It's performing the way it was intended with the very light heads.

As a mostly bank fisherman, the EWG neds are a saving grace. I like to use Ned baits that are a little longer or have more action like the TRD Ticklerz or the Xzone Ned Zone. I've found that my hookup ratio is really good on the Z-Man EWG Nedlockz and it has a short hook, only a size 1 I believe

In heavy cover or from the bank the Ned hooks with single wire or double wire weed guard work good. Use these sometimes instead of the heads with longer buried EWG hook.

I pick my Ned head based on cover, bottom composition, and current, so I use open hooks, EWG (including football head EWG), and mushroom heads with wire weed guards in a rotation dictated by what I might hang up on. One of my favourite ways to use open hook Ned heads is when I'm wading the river. I use light weight heads when the bottom is hard with patches of weeds or piles of bigger rocks for smallmouth bass to hide in. I let my bait tumble by suspected ambush points and wait for the fish to eat. I can only suspect that the tumbling bait looks like forage that's in trouble because it seems as though the smallies can't help themselves!

I fish primarily streams and rivers for smallies, I have found that jig heads with sickle hooks work well to stick and hold fish. I have also had some custom ned rig hooks made with tungsten and 3/0 hooks for the longer shank. This has helped with short strikes.

These hooks are also better at not gut-hooking. Barbless circle hooks hold fish better than traditional unbarbed hooks. It's easy to gut-hook with senko/ned-rig so I like your approach.

Fishing from the bank i often get snagged with ned rig but will tolerate it more than any baits because it catch fish . I only use Zman products and allmost all of they’re heads . The Zman EWG is working really good with Elaztech and do not cut the action that much, especially with the TRD TICKLERS , TRD CRAWZ AND TRD BUGZ you still got lots of action ! I finally got my hands on the new max scent LIL GENERAL, will try it this summer to see the difference between Zman !

I just started taking really small clear tubing and put it up on the hook then put the bait on then now bend the tubing over split the tubing past the barb and thread it over the tip of the hook, when you get a bite the tubing pushes down and the hook point slips through where you split the tubing and it works great, they can't see it because it's clear and it's weedless because the hook point is covered until you get a bite and the hook point slips right through the split you put in the tubing

I don't fish a ned rig that often since it's just too snaggy around here with all the vegetation. But if I do a ned-style bait, I'm using a 1/0 worm hook (not ewg) and I rig it texas style, 1/8 or smaller bullet weight and all. I find that it actually works really really well. I essentially get the best of both worlds. I'll even add a red glass bead between the weight and the hook for a little extra clacking noise that seems to help if the water is stained. I usually peg the weight, but sometimes I just let it slide. It all depends on how lazy I'm feeling, lol.

Even though I am in Florida, a lot of my fishing happens in ponds with little cover or vegetation, so the Ned becomes a viable option. What you're describing sounds like a downsized version of a Texas-rigged stick bait. How small do you go with your plastic? The BPS mini (3-inch I think?) stik-o came to my mind as I was reading this. I will use those or a finesse worm on a mushroom head in colder water or when the fish are finicky.

I'm not a big ned rig guy but I use the 1/8 owner block head offset head and the trds. I seldom get hung up and need to retie. I'm not arguing but retying a leader a few times a morning would knock a big hole in the amount of fish I'm catching. I have not had an issue setting the hook. Now, there may be fish that would hook themselves if the hook was bare so there's there's that but I'm catching a lot of fish with little trouble, makes for a smooth morning. I find I can fish the 1/8th 30% farther than I can even throw a 1/16th. I'm not saying it's better than the lighter stuff and bare hook but it's much easier. I wouldn't rule it out.

Using water-based scents on your plastics will result in more hits, especially if your fishing where a channel ends. After every cast you should be sure your plastic is clear of debris and is still hooked on an angle where it swims straight. Fish do not use their sight anywhere near as much as they use their lateral line or nose. A hook showing isn't going to scare an enticed fish away. Fish aren't scared of hooks or needles. We appreciate an easy meal and with good presentation, we aren't scared of the "silverware" and neither are the fish. Enough anthropomorphizing. (I have seen braided line "stun" a fish into not biting) Unless I missed something I was surprised that most of this video was advising you to hide the hook more. The "swim/glide/fall" is most affected by the angle of the plastic on the hook and not the drag of the hook in the water ("hook drag" in the water is hilarious to me, we're not using deep sea fishing hooks, this has to be negligible.) By the way, this video is coming from a guy who's hooked his chartreuse plastic upside down. 5:00

Not used in grass, of course, but for ponds with very little vegetation / heavy cover, it's a great option - especially when conditions are tough. Use proper gear - medium or med/lt. spinning is best in my opinion - and stay light with your heads and line. Good luck!

@@MattStefanFishing Finesse is not a thing down here for many..probably most..especially if they are fishing our big grassy lakes. My regular pond stops set up well for finesse, and light-line spinning is a major comfort zone for me, having grown up fishing light-tackle inshore saltwater, so i probably reach for it more than most. The good news is that our fish probably see a lot fewer Neds than in other states...which works out well for those of us who do throw it. Thanks!
