As a child I didn't really understand what George Washington was all about other than he had a wooden tooth, he chopped down the cherry tree, he was on a nickel and $1 bill and is famous for its "I cannot tell a lie". This movie along with others (thank you KZfaq by the way) Has open my eyes to a wonderful man, a wonderful General, a wonderful human being... President George Washington

1:23:43 Washington has been fighting for months outmanned and outgunned, and not only did he manage a victory, he managed it with no casualties to his side. Even to a modern officer with the advantage flipped in their favor, that's unusually good fortune. For Washington it would have been mind-blowing.

Looks & sounds pretty-authentic. Jeff Daniels makes for an impressive & convincing Washington, although perhaps a little-more close-mouthed & stoic than the actual-man. I think he captures the General's overall-essence, though, nonetheless. The battle itself is well-staged, the violence not sugar-coated. The discussed-strategy for capturing Trenton was simplified for the film, as there were additional-wings which took other routes into the town, surrounding it, including one which never did arrive. There was a 2nd-battle of Trenton, also, a short-time later, on the American-return from defeating the British at Princeton but this elongated-campaign wasn't mentioned. Few people today know anything about the 2nd-Battle of Trenton. All in all, quite a good historical-drama. It's generally low-key dramatic tone lends an effective-seriousness to the crisis-atmosphere. The realistic-scenes between Washington & his officers are especially good here.

I wish they could make a movie where that portrayed the Hessians accurately, from my understanding it was a brutal fight till they eventually surrendered, and idk for some reason I didn’t like Jeff Daniels as Washington, I didn’t hate him, but my favorite Washington actor would be Ian Kahn. I did really enjoy Glover and Knox’s portrayals though. Imagine what it must’ve been like to be in the continental army at that time, they knew nothing but defeat and were vastly outnumbered and Ill equipped, but somehow were able to preserve long enough for the French to join and create a new country, now we have people crying over EVERY thing

Those of us who know our nations' true history know the key part that Divine Providence played, both in George Washington's life and his time commanding our troops. It was His supernatural favor that enabled Washington to cross the Delaware, in an impossible situation. Washington acknowledged this... and of course the famous painting of him, kneeling in prayer prior to that crossing, testifies to his strong faith. God had His hand on this nation from the very start ... and will, I believe, restore His hand of grace to us, if only we return to Him.

It is peculiar that Washington entertained Hessian officer prisoners to dine with him and his staff after Trenton if he hated them so much, as is portrayed in this film. Having now read American historian Edward Lovell's excellent book "The Hessians", which tells the whole story of the German auxiliary (not mercenary !) forces employed by the British in America, I found no mention of the alleged massacre of 500 rebel soldiers in New York after they had surrendered ! I think that this tale of woe is just another of the many untruths told by American rebels during the war, perpetuated until this day, otherwise Washington's friendly treatment and praise of the Hessian officers after Trenton is difficult to comprehend.
