Um Not to be a downer but this song is absolutely NOT a love song, hes singing about how he can't light up her eyes the way he should and that it doesn't matter what she says or does plus that they are lying to themselves about the fact that it should be better but they are settling for not being in love anymore. Not something to play at your wedding. It is however a haunting elegant song by a masterful songwriter and I really like the song even if it makes me feel melancholy, I think that was the intent. But of course you can do whatever you wish.

I agree with what you are saying , but it's a beautiful , gorgeous song I think any music that u can relate to no matter how sad, I love the Cure ( I did in the 80's ) but as years have gone by the music is more important to me than ever. Also I was listening to Coldplay' s ' Everflow ' the other day , it's every bit as well written as this song and I love it !but for some reason it makes me very sad even though the message I get from it is relatively positive. :)

Elise, it doesn't matter what you say You know I'll stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same The way we act out Every way to smile Forget And make believe we never needed Any more than this Any more than this Elise it doesn't matter what you do You know I'll never really get inside of you To make your eyes catch fire the way they should To may the blue will pull me in If they only would If they only would At least I'd lose this sense of sensing Something else that hides away From me and you this world's to part With aching words And breaking hearts And all the smiles your hands can take But I can take as much as you can throw And then throw it all away Oh I'll throw it all away Like throwing faces as the sky Like throwing arms round yesterday I stood and stared like stone in front of you And the way I stared it seemed I looked right out of you And even the way I stand I stand away from you Elise believe me take me away from this And secretly we'll slip into all our promises Away from it all in the cover of the night again And we'll watch the years fall And we'll dream it all back like we do Elise it doesn't matter what you say You know I'll stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same the way We act out Every way to smile Forget and make believe we never needed any more than this Any more than this As fast as I pick it up It falls away through my clutching hands As fast as I pick it up It falls away like falling sand But there's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do at all...

I've been listening to The Cure a lot lately, and not because I'm depressed, but I've loved them since I was 12.....34 years now. I never appreciated the music and lyrics as much as I do now. 99.9% of their song's brings out so many different emotions, this being one of them, but each album is so different and hauntingly beautiful. Don't ever stop singing Robert, don't ever stop. To the band as a whole...never ever stop playing. I love and adore The Cure.
@NightmareZerogbs7 ай бұрын
I find it fascinating that the small lyrical changes between this and the final version that went into the album change the tone COMPLETELY, both are about unrequited love, but here, they sound like the person singing is still clinging to hope even when they know there's no point as they will never be loved back...and the album version is about resignation, the singer feels the same love, but there, they've given up and accepted it's not meant to be. A simple change from "Elise it doesn't matter what you say, you know I'll stay here every yesterday" to "it doesn't matter what you say, _I just can't stay here every yesterday_ "is a world of a difference, The part where it's most evident (and painful) is right before the musical solo, here, it begs for another chance, for an escape from reality (Elise believe me take me away from this, and secretly we'll slip into all our promises), and in the final version, there's resignation (Elise believe I never wanted this, I thought this time I'd keep all of my promises, I thought you were the girl I always dreamed about...But I let the dream go and the promises broke, the make-believe ran out) which is devastating to hear...but we've all been there, in both meanings of the song. It really helped me let go of my highschool crush that I held on to for so many years, I don't thinkl I would've moved on without this song.
