I always felt they each have strengths that the other lacks, maybe they resent that. Morrissey is witty, has poetic commentary authentic to real life and his vocals are raw in a way that really resonates emotionally. Robert is incredibly imaginary, builds huge landscapes with his sounds that take you to another world and does unusual, avant-garde things with his vocals that are exciting. It’s like the practical poet vs the dreamy painter.

Weird. If their egos hadn't been so big (specially Moz') they could have been great friends in other universe. They're both so shy and romantic and childish, introvert and devoted to their art that it is kinda sad that they didn't get along well just because of plain annoyance. The library worm and the goth would have been such a nice couple together and imagine them making a collab! The only thing I am sure of, is that secretly, they're each other's fan.

"The only thing I am sure of, is that secretly, they're each other's fan." I share your evaluation and also think it is the explanation. I have often experienced that people who resemble each other in terms of characteristics and traits can't stand each other with particular emphasis. Perhaps because they recognize themselves too much.

@@diorsseI’d say everything pre-strangeways mog the fuck out of the cure’s discog. The cure is really good at making soundscapes/atmospheres, but Morrissey is *_much_* better lyricist (better wit and more authentic-sounding prose), and Johnny Marr is a *_much_* better guitar player (and everyone knows this). Vocally, Morrissey is marginally better.

I always felt that Just Like Heaven is one of those occasional songs which are brilliant but you don't know why; the chords aren't original, the lead guitar just goes up and down and the words and story are distinctly sixth form poetry, so you can see how a poetry lover like Morrissey, regardless of his personal feud, wouldn't be impressed. On the surface it feels throwaway. But somehow the song just grows the more times you hear it and comes back with a vengeance when you meet someone who makes you go a bit giddy.

Morrissey is one of the most innovative singers in rock and roll history. His croon was unlike anything ever before esp during the middle of a then tired electro-pop craze that was well past its prime by late 83 when The Smiths emerged FULLY FORMED. It’s historically documented that Morrissey and moreso Marr… 1000% resented the second half of the 80s.

Here're the things they said about this in 2019. "sam: Finally, any small regrets? Morrissey: Oh, I never make my regrets small … if I can help it. Oh. Umm. Robert Smith. I said some terrible things about him 35 years ago … but I didn’t mean them … I was just being very Grange Hill. It’s great when you can blame everything on Tourette’s syndrome. [laughs] sam: but you’ve never met him? Morrissey: Oddly, I was in a pub near Buckingham Palace perhaps ten years ago … and there he was … staring over confrontationally. I take no moral responsibility for whatever I said in 1983 … after all … who does?" Source: www.morrisseycentral.com/messagesfrommorrissey/234417-the-interview "Speaking of laying things to rest, did you see that Morrissey apologised earlier this year over his part in your past feud? Robert Smith: It was brought to my attention, yeah. It was slightly odd as I haven’t really had it at the forefront of my consciousness over the last 20 or 30 years. I don’t know. Even at the time I never quite understood what the problem was. It’s far from important now."
