Jack Nowell spoke passionately about the effect that 4G pitches are having in rugby. A 4G pitch is made with synthetic grass without a need for rubber crumb. Ryan Wilson and Max Lahiff also spoke about them.

Many years ago I played a game in an American Football Stadium on Artificial turf! It was horrible. Hard as a rock and it burned like carpet burns! We were warned to wear elbow and knee pads but it did not help much. Long time to recover from. It was a top team University team field too! I was raised and played most of my senior career in Glasgow. At a high level too! The weather was great. Liked playing on wet pitches! Slowed the backs down so props could get them!

If they were made nice and soft permanently, they would be perfect for rugby, as I'm 130kg and I only like playing on softer ground, or it's too hard on joints

I am an American. I have played and trained on artificial turf all my life, with some poor grass fields mixed in. It want until recently I played on a high quality grass field. It was awesome. So much better in contact and the ball bounced much better than I expected. In addition I didn’t get any turf burns and, even though it was 97 degrees F (I think mid-thirties Celsius), I was not boiling like I would have been on turf.

I have been relatively injury free for a while, but every time I play on 4G I get tendinitis in my knee. The stuff is brutal, especially at lineout time, jumping is awful on it.

They are copying the NFL, since they are cheaper to maintain and can be multipurpose. Though tackling and sliding across the ground, even slamming onto the ground is dangerous

These pitches are hazardous on so many levels. Wound infections are some of the scariest. Who would have thought rubbing rubber into open wounds was toxic.

The thing is as great as 4G pitches are for an extra revenue stream and to centralize training and playing in one facility, the bottom line is the injury rate is clearly higher. Player welfare should come before money especially at the top level. You cant beat a grass pitch especially in those rainy december games where its shove it up your shirt and pick and go! I agree with Marler.

Back in the 1970's artificial turf was all the rage in US gridiron football fields. It was ballyhooed as reducing knee and ankle injuries by 85%. 10 years later it was found that knee and ankle injuries had INCREASED by 85 %. Lets add to this the following: in the 60's the Olympic physician, Dr Hanley of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, had patented a "Hanley Heel", which was a hard rubber disc that replaced the heel cleats on field sport shoes. His research determined that hip, knee, ankle injuries were more likely to occur when the foot was locked into the ground by the 6 plus cleats. Removing the back cleats meant that a blow to the side of the leg would allow the leg to turn with the blow and reduce the chances of injury. I played rugby for 19 years and played with only nubs where the back cleats would be. No injuries. How much worse are the physics of this on an artificial surface? Has anyone bothered to do the research? As one guest here suggests, "follow the money".....the answer is probably know for the reason suggested. Lots of BS about player safety and yet 3 seasons ago a Welsh fullback was playing in a match after having had 3 concussions in the previous 5 months. Not only are players bigger because of foolish changes in the Laws or their interpretations making it necessary (to include subs), but now the fields are allowing greater pace. Concern for player safety? Nah......

@@bitofeverything10 why does he need to be a pro to give a first hand experience on playing the same sport on the same pitch. If he was giving an opinion on what it takes to make it in rugby I could understand your comment, the fact he is commenting from a subjective experience is not only ok but I too agree with him, I've played trained many a game on them and I like them. Muddy divetted grass pitches that freeze over in the winter or waterlog in the rain can also be a problem. These guys are pros and one mentioned the pellets are carcinogenic. Sorry but he is a pro and scientifically wrong. So you still only listen to the pros ?

From what I’ve read, avoid rubber crumb completely due to the carcinogenic risk. There was one comment about pre-season training and the heat haze from the artificial pitch - imagine the rubber crumb venting, emitting those carcinogens and being inhaled? Rubber crumb should be banned, it appears to be a serious health and safety ticking time bomb.

Wearing rugby-specific, or worst soccer/football, cleats on these 4G pitches is a catastrophe, at least for me. Since the laws have been relaxed on the types of boots you can use I've gone strictly to gridiron-football cleats for playing on synthetic surfaces. Low profile, molded with aggressive/off center toe cleats have been worlds better in preventing rolled ankles and even hamstring pulls from awkward cuts/jukes both in attack and defense. 100% agree they should be banned. Played on Highland RFC's all new, all weather 4G pitch, 2nd game on in the middle of winter and it still managed to freeze over by half time. By full time i'd lost so much skin of my knee's i could see the fat. Missed the next 3 games because of one awful pitch.

Fear mongering. As someone who plays and trains on one, it is a godsend. Our old pitch was a waterlogged nightmare. Occasional grazes aside, for the amateur game they are absolutely essential in keeping games going. Before the recent rain, our two grass pitches were hard and barren, and in fact, over the summer competitions, my team played in, my worst cut/graze (which was an open wound) came from a rock hard grass pitch. Stop spreading disinformation about the carcinogens involved with artificial pitches - this is just a hypothesis. You have a responsibility to maintain a level of factual correctness.
