***** I feel like fans of older films refuse to acknowledge recent performances eben though some might deserve to be placed higher on the list. Granted, I've not seen a lot of the films on your list. I'll give you my ten, in no particular order: 1. Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight 2. Leonardo DiCaprio - Django Unchained/The Wolf of Wall Street (not sure which I like better) 3. Marlon Brando - The Godfather 4. Robert DeNiro - The Deer Hunter 5. Christian Bale - The Fighter 6. Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 7. Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln/My Left Foot 8. Colin Firth - The King's Speech 9. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump 10. Brad Pitt - Twelve Monkeys/Fight Club And that's just the men who I can think of right now. I'm sure it'd change if I were reminded of some others. Honourable mentions for the ladies would be: Natalie Portman - Black Swan Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine Michelle Williams - My Week with Marilyn Anne Hathaway - Les Miserables Meryl Streep - (Just about anything she does)

I hate it when people say that without Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight would be mediocre: a) Sure, take Anthony Hopkins away from SOTL, or Harrison Ford from Indiana Jones, or Schwartzenegger from Terminator, or the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. It's part of the movie, deal with it. b) Heath did an amazing performance, without a doubt one of the best I've seen in my life, but a good performance is nothing without a well written character; the Joker is brilliantly written. He's more of a device than a character (given that we don't get to know his backstory or anything), but he works exceptionally in that role. He functions perfectly as a force of nature that stands for everything that Batman stands against. Yes, the performance added something with the ticks and mannerisms, but the character itself, on paper, was already fascinating on his own. c) There are plenty of other amazing things in The Dark Knight besides the Joker; the triad (Batman, Gordon, Dent) and all of their character arcs are executed perfectly, to the point where you could watch the film considering Harvey the protagonist and it would still be a compelling story. The tragedy element that is rarely seen in superhero films (well, I should clarify, tragic endings). Oldman, Caine, Freeman, Eckhart, and yes, even Bale give good performances, you just watch that last scene with Batman, Gordon and Two-Face to see for yourself. The film deals with vigilantism uniquely, being the first (and pretty much only) superhero film to actually deal with the idea that a masked vigilante would inevitably get consumed by power, the fact that in order to stay true to our ideals, we must compromise. Every character in the film gets their own story arc, and without making it feel like we're out of focus, as they all revolve around the same story; the film is filled with setups and payoffs, and almost every line in it is nuanced and has a point and relevance. And of course, the soundtrack, the cinematography, the pacing, etc. It's also possibly the best written love triangle on any superhero film I've seen, as it isn't just unnecessary drama, but rather helps make the characters more human, etc. Now, granted, the Joker is the reason why most of the themes and commentary are hold together, but again, even without Heath Ledger's amazing performance, the character would still be fascinating and play the same role. There's plenty of stuff to like in the film besides the Joker. It's fantastic, really, and it's undoubtedly unique.

Axxion Pictures begins and rises are better batman films and better films in general...dark knight is good but it feels like im watching law and order when the jokers not on screen....wheres batman???? hes barely in it you know why hes too op.....in his prime...you cant out fight him at this moment at time...seriously if jokers not on screen nothing happens...characters dont develop or do shit without him first putting things in motion...
@Manu-edits-only8 жыл бұрын
razkable The Joker is the catalyst for what happens, but they all get character development and every scene moves either the characters or the story forward. That way of judgment of "this is better cuz batman is in it more" is retarded, he gets a great character/story arc in Dark Knight, and if you can't see it then don't waste my time. Heath's performance is one of the best things about the film, but outside of that, it's still fantastic. Better Batman films in general... give me a break; read The Long Halloween, it is very much a Gotham crime drama, and all that 'law and order' serves as a way of making a point about Batman. No other superhero film has even come close to the praise The Dark Knight --deservedly-- got; my literature teacher told me the best superhero movie he's watched is The Dark Knight because of the philosophical battle and the thematic richness of the film. It's a great story with great characters and everything about it works. If I had a penny for every time someone casually complained about The Dark Knight for retarded reasons, I could afford to pay someone to beat them with one or more of its awards
@rideroundandstuff8 жыл бұрын
+Axxion Pictures Without the Joker the movie would be just a series of random things happening on screen. Somebody knows about Bruce Wayne, now Batman is in Japan, oh no the boats gonna explode, see how Bruce Wayne is cruising around in his Lamborghini, Gordon is dead, Two Face happens, a love story, just kidding Gordon isn’t dead, look at how this Sonar works, Batman fires bullets into brick walls using a gatling gun, Bruce Wayne on a boat with a russian ballet. The movie has no structure at all. They just threw in there whatever came to their mind would be cool. The Joker is the only thing holding everything together.

After watching this movie, I just can't see Leto matching Leger's performance. I can't. The only way Leto can get my thumbs up is if he is Leto's joker, not Heath's, because there is no beating Heath Leger's joker at his own game.
@deathgaming74087 жыл бұрын
Leto is perfect for Suicide Squad and Ledger is perfect for The Dark Knight both of them is good in their own movie Suicide Squad looks like a fun movie and not too dark so Leto looks perfect for it in my opinion i just he acts like it. Now Ledger....man i'm a fan of this guy since i watch this him in TDK and will watch his other film's he's just perfect in The Dark Knight, Very dark and gritty amazingly still have that sense of humor the Joker always has, The way he talks and acts is amazing beyond belief i doubt Leto will match but i like his performance so far in the trailer lets just hope he delivers.

I think Leto looks great! Of course, matching Ledger's performance is a long shot. But I think he'll be better than Nicholson at least.

You do realize that in the comics there's been 3 different incarnations of the joker. It's been confirmed. -Golden Era(Cold blooded killer joker) -Silver Era(Funny thief,prankster joker) -Bronze Era(psychopath Joker) So there's no reason to compare both their jokers, when in reality they could actually be playing 2 completely different incarnations.Heath's was the cold blooded killer and Jared's is more like the psychopath joker. So stop trying to put the joker in a certain box, there's literally 3 different men,3 different versions of the joker so there's no reason why all the on screen versions of the joker we get should be the same.
@thefirstbourne1497 жыл бұрын

I would personally reverse the scores for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises. I think The Dark Knight is a perfect film and one of the best ever made (i.e. 10/10). The Dark Knight Rises is a near-perfect film and a near-perfect conclusion to one of the best trilogies of all time (i.e. 9/10). And, Batman Begins is an excellent film that introduced the character so well and had a few flaws (i.e. 8/10). Sill respect your opinion, though. :)

It was an amazing Joker. You need to remember that Nolan tried to make an "as-close-to-realistic" Batman universe. I doubt they could have had a better "realistic" Joker than Ledger. Not saying that as a Nolan fanboy, not saying it because Heath died - saying it as a fan of the Joker.

This is literally the most perfect review for this movie I've ever seen. This movie is almost a victim of its own greatness, because it was so well-received that some people feel it's overrated just for that reason. But it really is a fantastic movie; everything is literally so well thought out and so well-written. btw, what Kristian says about this still being BATMAN'S movie is absolutely correct. Of course the Joker is going to be a huge presence, but it's Batman's story arc.

For the millennial generation, I don't think any movie experience will ever beat watching The Dark Knight at the cinema for the first time. I still remember the collective 'Holy Shit!' that followed Joker slamming Gambol's thug into the pencil on the table and the collective gasp that followed Harvey Dent's reveal as Two-Face in the hospital. Just pure gold.

Here's how I rate the Batman movies, including the animated ones. Batman 1989: 8/10- very fun comic book movie in the view of Tim Burton, and Michael Keaton is the best Bruce Wayne/Batman next to Christian Bale. Batman Returns: 7.5/10- very good sequel and even a bit darker than the first one, but it's not as good as the first one. Danny DeVito played an excellent and disgusting looking Penguin, and Michelle Pfeiffer was magnificent and downright sexy as Catwoman...meeeeeeoooooow. Also, I love the Christmas background. Batman Forever: 4/10- ugh, ever since Joel Schumacher took over Burton's Batman series, everyone can see a total decline in quality. I'm sorry, but I just don't see Val Kilmer as Batman/Bruce Wayne. When I first watched this movie, I was scratching my head at Val Kilmer. He's a great actor, but he doesn't look like Batman or Bruce Wayne. But there are worse things about this movie than Val Kilmer's Batman. I just can't take the villains seriously in this movie. Jeremy Jahns once said that the villains in this movie all acted like The Joker, and he's right. Two Face and Riddler are basically carbon copies of The Joker. I always thought that Two Face was supposed to be just a cold hearted killer, and The Riddler was supposed to be a manipulative sociopath who makes the most complexed riddles. They were just so hammy in this movie that they were basically cartoon characters than life threatening criminals. I totally respect Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey because they're excellent actors, I just blame the writing for not giving them different personalities. I also do not see Chris O'Donnell as Robin. He looks a little old to be a teenage sidekick. The entire movie felt like a cartoon than a movie. Batman and Robin: shit stain/10- I don't believe it; I just don't believe it. I thought Batman Forever was mediocre and forgettable, but this abomination is not only the worst Batman movie, but one of the worst movies ever made. George Clooney as Batman in this movie was basically George Clooney in a Batman costume. *Hi Freeze, I'm Batman.* I'll take back everything I said about Val Kilmer in the previous movie because Val Kilmer is an excellent Batman compared to Clooney. Again, George Clooney is a great actor, but I blame the writing and the directing. Arnold Schwarzenegger is horrible as Mr. Freeze. Almost everything he said were nothing but awful puns. *Let's kick some ice!* The costume designs were awful, the writing sucks, and the directing is atrocious. How did Joel Schumacher, the man who depicted vampires as badass rebels in The Lost Boys and not sparkling pixies, make this piece of shit? But the worst parts of the movie are Bat-nipples and a Bat-credit card. *A BAT-CREDIT CARD!?!? RAPE MY CHILDHOOD!!!* How did a great Batman film series turn to shit? How did a film series started off so dark, and ended up looking like a Saturday morning kids show? Was this movie supposed to be aimed at children? Why am I asking you all these questions? Mermaid Man, where are you? Batman Begins: 9/10- thank God that a great film director like Christopher Nolan rebooted the Batman franchise. When I first heard of Batman Begins, I wasn't interested in seeing it after I watched Batman and Robin. You really can't blame me. But when I watched it on TV, I was blown away. That was possibly the best origin story of how a young Bruce Wayne became Batman. I know a lot of people make fun of Christian Bale's voice as Batman, but I love Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman. I thought he was just as good as Michael Keaton, and he's waaaaaaaaay better than Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Michael Caine was great as Alfred too. I even love the supporting cast. Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy played excellent villains as Ra's Al Ghul and Scarecrow. Gary Oldman is awesome (as always) as Gordon and Morgan Freeman is delightful as Lucius Fox. Before watching this movie, I thought Scarecrow was gonna be the main villain, but it turned out to be Ra's. But that's okay, because Scarecrow gets the better treatment by appearing in Nolan's entire Batman trilogy. Man, Christopher Nolan sure does love Cillian Murphy. The Dark Knight: 10+/10- Why so serious? This movie is not only the best Batman movie ever or the best superhero movie ever, but it's also one of the best movies ever made! I remember going to the movie theater with my dad to see this movie, and my jaw entirely dropped after watching this. Say what you will about Jack Nicholson or Mark Hamill as The Joker, but Heath Ledger IS The Joker! When I first found out that he died before the movie was released, I felt so bad. That man never had the chance to see the movie and his performance. He did such a terrific job and he definitely deserved the Oscar. Whenever I watch the movie, I just can't help myself but to root for The Joker than Batman (what's wrong with me?). The Joker in this movie is just so psychotic, intelligent, terrifying, and carries a dark sense of humor. I agree with Chris Stuckmann that everything The Joker says is true. Nobody can be 100% good. You just never know what to expect from him, he's THAT great of a villain. I will never forget that magic trick with the pencil. I love the fact that unlike the cliche villains or the other criminals in Gotham City, The Joker doesn't care about money. I mean, he just burned a mountain of money for chrissake. He is always a mystery to the citizens of Gotham and he always tells a different backstory of how he got his scars. The Joker even admires Batman and believes he completes himself. To The Joker, Batman is the yang to his yin. Christian Bale still does a great job being Bruce Wayne/Batman, and surprisingly Aaron Eckhart did a fantastic job as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I honestly never expected Harvey to become Two-Face in this movie, and I really loved it. Two of my favorite villains in one movie. And Aaron Eckhart is always a better Two-Face than Tommy Lee Jones. I also like to give a shout out to Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes; I think she played her character better than Katie Holmes. I don't think any superhero movie can beat The Dark Knight. This movie just brought in a new definition of superhero movies. You guys can go on saying The Avengers is the best superhero movie ever made, but I think that goes to The Dark Knight. It's well written, action packed, and it's full of surprises The Dark Knight Rises: 7/10- this movie may be the weakest of the trilogy, but I still enjoyed it none the less. I thought Bane was a cool villain, but not as great as The Joker. Anne Hathaway was great as Catwoman, and maybe a bit on par with Michelle Pfeiffer. I even love the fact that they secretly added Robin to the story. John Blake almost rhymes with Tim Drake. But there were some problems I had with this movie. I didn't like how they brought back The League of Shadows from Batman Begins, only to destroy Gotham...again. Even Bane actually works for the Al Ghul's like how Scarecrow did. I keep questioning myself why Christopher Nolan did that rather than coming up with something more original. This movie basically makes The Dark Knight look like filler. They never even mentioned The Joker in this movie. I thought Batman and Commissioner Gordon would still be affected by the chaos The Joker created. I think TDKR would've been better if Bane actually worked alone and held his own organization of criminals, or even better, have The Riddler be the main antagonist. Do you know how awesome it would be for The Riddler to be in a Christopher Nolan Batman movie? Just think about it. I always thought Guy Pearce or Leonardo DiCaprio would be excellent choices as The Riddler. We would finally have a better Riddler than Jim Carrey. Another thing that questioned me was how Bruce Wayne escaped a prison in some foreign country and ended up in Gotham City in a matter of 10 minutes. But those are the only problems I have with this movie. The rest of the movie was thrilling and entertaining, just like every Christopher Nolan movie. Okay, now on to the animated Batman movies that I've seen. Batman: Mask of Phantasm: 8.5/10- Good God, this movie is just as dark as the Tim Burton movies. I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but I still remember loving it. I always found Phantasm more interesting than Batman and The Joker here. The way it tells a backstory just keeps me hooked for how it connects to the present. I'm not gonna explain who Phantasm is, it's up for you to watch. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker: 9/10- This is possibly my favorite of the animated Batman movies. It's great to have Mark Hamill play The Joker here. He's the best animated Joker while Heath Ledger is the best live-action Joker. I think the best scene in this movie is the flashback scene when Bruce Wayne was still Batman and not Terry McGuinness. All I can say about this scene is it's possibly darker than Nolan's entire Batman trilogy. Poor Robin. I have seen Batman: Gotham Knight, but I don't remember much of it, so I can't review it either. That's all I can list for now.

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S character study and vision is all that this movies was about. He knows exactly what is going on and what should be done (in his stories). He respects screenplay and screen time more than anyone has ever done. He knows what a great and epic movie can be, what it can do to its audience and he has made movies BEYOND EPIC. The only thing that Nolan does not knows is that he is the Real Dark Knight. I cannot get over the vision and skills both of these brothers have (Jonathan Nolan). P.S - Hans Zimmer adds another layer of outstandingness in his movies and every other game, movie and tv shows he has ever done. Nothing but love and respect.

The line was super long, and the film was just a great experience, where everyone in the theatre reacts, and cheers at the same time. What I love about The Dark Knight and Watchmen is that they acknowledge that doing the right thing is sometimes doing the lesser of two evils. You can't always uphold seemingly good rules like "don't kill" and "don't lie" if you really want to do good. Both of these movies' endings involve killing and lying by the protagonists (though Harvey's death seemed to be unintentional) and it lets those movies stand out not only as superhero movies but even as movies in general.
