It kind of annoys me when people get a dog just cause it looks cute or it's pretty and don't even give other dogs a chance I adopted mine when he was 2 he's now 9 now and because he was missing a leg no one else wanted him I took it right away and I have to say he's the most loyal, loving, well behaved dog I could ever of hoped for.

True. My mom is a Chihuahua breeder, registered and dogs are tested for hereditary problems. She refused to sell puppies to a bunch of people who she thought wouldn't be good owners. Also when buying you need to sign a contract basically saying you will take care of the dog and give it medical treatment if needed and you can not give the dog to someone else and if by any reason you don't want to keep it you should return it to the breeder (my mom). She has max 3 litters per female dog so she is not overbreeding the dog and any dog she doesn't sell or is not for breeding anymore she will keep (or possibly rehome with a contract)

Brachycephalic dogs aren't the only breed of dog out there. While the average mutts might be healthier than those breeds, there are plenty of breeds that have even better chances of staying healthy than a mutt - especially when they come from parents that have been thoroughly checked for hereditary diseases.

Someone who wants to raise a baby dog but can't take the risk of it getting too large (for example if the place they live in only allows small dogs)? When you get a puppy from unknown parents, you have no idea how it will turn out, both physically and mentally. If it's mixed with a hyper breed, you might end up with a dog that requires much more time than you can give, and if it's mixed with a lazy breed, you might not be able to do the fun activities you were planning to do with it. And if it's purebred, you might be able to guess at what temperament it will have as an adult, but then chances are it was rescued from one of those places and has the accompanying health issues. This is why I would never get another puppy from a shelter. The puppy we got ended up needing surgery on both eyes in addition to hardly ever wanting to play once he grew up. And while many people like a couch potato type dog, I prefer a more active one. When it comes to adopting an older dog, I agree that it's hard to go wrong though, as their personalities are fully developed and don't change much anymore, in addition being able to rule out all those health issues that become apparent late during a puppy's growth. Still the safest place to get a dog, is from a responsible breeder that can show you health certificates, let you meet the adult dogs, and get you in contact with previous clients so that you can ask them about their experiences with the puppies they bought. Which is what I will probably do when I get my next dog, after having had many rescue dogs, volunteering at shelters and also fostering dogs.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 7 жыл бұрын
Iona Unicorn Mclean Do you know where shelter dogs come from? They come from people who are either too stupid or too lazy to keep their female dogs away from male dogs for the short time they are in heat. The ones who then try to desperately get rid of the puppies they can't take care of by giving them away to any random stranger who is willing to take them. These random strangers are often not prepared for what they are getting into and often have neither the time to adequately care for the dog, nor the patience and sometimes even have landlords that don't allow "big dogs". ...well, the puppy was small when they got it, how were they supposed to know it would grow to that size when they didn't know the father was that big and only saw the small mother (if at all)? But does that mean that people who live in places that only allow small dogs should simply not get any dog at all? No, there is no reason not to get a dog that you know will stay small, because every ancestor was small too. Or the shelter dogs come from people who think they can make money off dogs without actually having to work, then sell them to the same kind of people as the first type. Do you know where shelter dogs do not come from? They don't come from responsible breeders who carefully choose the new homes their puppies will go to and make sure that the new family knows exactly how much work the dog will be and what size it will grow to. The people who buy from responsible breeders will never be in a situation where they are forced to give their dogs to shelters, because they had plenty of time to prepare themselves for the responsibilities, and if some blow of fate makes them unable to keep the dog, they can bring it back to the breeder until a new home can be found. A person who spent months - or even years - on a waiting list to get a dog and then payed thousands of dollars for it, is a whole lot less likely to just throw it out on the streets to be picked up by animal control. So yes, there is a safe way to ensure a long, healthy relationship with a dog you get, just as much as there is a need for selective breeding. Because many people love sharing their homes with dogs, but they would rather not have any dog than a dog that might be unsafe to be around their children or other pets, and that they may be forced to give up because it outgrew the permitted size fort whatever home they live in. There is no need to insult someone for saying the truth.

@@Justkilljordan Not all shelters can afford to look after the animals they take on. I know what you're going to say: they shouldn't take on more than they can handle, but the one I currently foster for, tends to be the last chance saloon for animals, so they don't want to turn any of them down because they know what will happen. As my Father In Law says, "you can't save them all" but I think it would break the hearts of the women who run the rescue centre if they were unable to save some of the animals. We have two dogs we foster at the moment and one of them needs his vaccinations. The rescue doesn't want us paying for them even though we've offered but I think it's going to be the case that we're going to have to tell them we're registering him with our vets until such time that he finds a forever home. That way, we don't have to travel to the next city from us to get him vaccinated. He hates being in the car, so I'd like to register him at my local vets where I can walk him there for his vaccs, or just drive for 5 minutes if there's anything wrong with him.

I recently went on a trip to the UK and I was shocked to see so many people walking around with pure bred designer dogs! Not a mutt in sight I swear. In the USA pure bred dogs are much more rarely seen, most people owning mixed breeds of which they have adopted.

In the states a lot of people are enamored with hybrid "breeds" that are just mutts. For instance, currently the Bernadoodle is popular. Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Labradoodle with goes for $5000. It's basically a mutt doggo, but people think it's an actual breed and spend a shit ton on money. The backyard breeders and puppy mills find out the hottest dog and breed it like crazy. Still an issue in some cases with inbreeding and bad conditions/unhealthy dogs.

As far as I know, most cows don't actually go through that anymore, it's possible to get them to lactate without constantly giving birth. Depends on where you are and what regulations exist though. I'm from Alberta and the vast majority of our cows are at least partly free range (out in a field eating grass and chilling with each other) and treated well. You see them everywhere you drive that isn't a city. I've seen some videos of pretty scary practices from places like the US though, so I get what you're talking about. There are better ways and if we can't figure them out or practice them, we should stop eating the product.

@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 7 жыл бұрын
Most people choose to buy a certain breed because of their own likes and dislikes, not because of "how other people see a certain animal". It's a fact that different breeds have certain temperaments, and some breeds are better suited to your lifestyle than others. When you get a puppy of unknown origin, you can't prepare for what personality it will have once it grows up. Someone who wants a calm dog might end up with a hyper one and someone who wants a hyper dog might end up with one that just wants to sleep all day. So there is actually a purpose to having breeds. No one ever said that there was one breed that was perfect for all people. But there are breeds that are perfect for certain lifestyles.

down in the southern italian rural country where i live, me and the ma were on our way to a local market, happened to come across a farmer in the fields with his sheep, in a random abandoned house there were 4 puppys, i asked the guy if they were his, he said no, if you want one take one, we waited to see if anyone came for them but they didnt, decided against it for the minute then headed back to the car, to find one of the pups (6-7 weeks old) had scrambled into the passenger side of the car, We decided to take it in, found it to be a girl, called her chica, i expected her to be a small dog, well 4 years later she's hit 35kg of sold muscle and turns out she's a pedigree german pointer in perfect health, no issues anywhere, all the others were picked up by passers-by. A year after we got her our friends male lab and female pitbull had puppies, we got one of them, tyson, he's' an absolute dream, this december just gone we decided to get a 3rd and final dog as where we live there are alot of robberies (criminals, migrants ect) after researching for ages i decided on a cane corso, i went through many breeders before i found the right one, he breeds for the betterment of the corso and bringing it back to its former glory, unlike alot in the us who have bastardised the breed, Has world champion dogs and is very VERY particular when breeding, as with most breeds people tend to fuck around with the temperment, looks ect with disregard for health, SO, loki is now 4 months old, vet is extremely impressed with the time and effort put into him, He is the only dog i put money for and it was worth every penny (being down here wasn't as much as in the uk or us) , but the anti breeding brigade will still not be happy, even though i rescued and abandoned pupster and adopted another form my friend. @animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 7 жыл бұрын
It's not about being picky. It is just as bad for the dog as it is for the owner when a dog is placed into a family that can't comply with their specific needs. For example a hyper herding dog mix being adopted to someone who lives in an apartment because no one knew it was a herding dog based on looks. Dogs will often act differently in a stressful environment than it will at home, so a dog that appears calm might actually just be too intimidated by all the noise from the other dogs. And many shelters don't allow people to take dogs home to test how they will behave in a home environment.

I do have a stray and only had strays till now but I see nothing wrong în buying if you buy from an owner that does not breed to sell but simply had dogs that had pupies and they try to find a home for them, because în my country it is a custom to give money for a dog if you get him from the owner the parents as it is belived this will make the pup live longer and be healty.

The Collie-Lurcher attacks my living room door whenever someone knocks on the door, but that's because he's very protective of us. Other than that though, he's great. When I have a bad day, he will come up to me and put his paw on my leg, or rest his face on my arm. The Staffy we have at the moment will only do anything for food. He's funny because he wants a treat just for moving out of your way when he gets under your feet. The only real downside of these two are that neither are cat friendly. They go nuts when we're on walks and they see a cat. If they're on harnesses or Halti head harness, then they're easier to control, so I try to avoid using collar and lead combos.

@@ells1216 We've always brought our puppies (staffy, doberman boxer) from babies from breeders and had them till old age, that was over a decade ago though. Not too long ago we decided to get a rescue, a chihuahua x Jack Russel mix, he was absolutely fine in the beginning then one day he randomly lunged, attacked me unprovoked, bit me ferociously. I was his main handler and done everything for him. The next few days he wouldn't eat from me, starved himself and continuously lunged at me, needless to say he attacked my child a few days later. Took him to the vet to see if he was sick, he then tried to attack the vet. He had zero obedience, abysmal behaviour and was dog aggressive. When we got him we were told he was great in all those areas. He ended up going back into a shelter. Everyone's so quick to judge and tell you to adopt, but you need to remember these dogs in shelters had a history before you got them, it's important you know everything so you can better know how to Care for them. Alot of the times these shelters dont know all the history because the dogs might be strays and/or previous owners have lied about the dogs past just to get rid of them. Next month we will pick up our new puppy staff, we've been to see him at the breeders home when he was 2 weeks then at again at 4 weeks, with his whole litter, met the mum and dad. I don't care about people telling me I'm being unethical at this point we tried to do the right thing and it literally bit us in the arse. I've never in my life of having three different breeds of dogs from breeders did I have as much trouble i had with the rescue.

It's great that someone is raising awareness about this. I couldn't watch past the 7th minute, it's just too much. I was extremely careful and did my research when I decided to get my puppy in order not to fund similar activities. I would never get a pet from a pet store either - keeping such a young dog or cat in a cage without physical contact with its mother or a human seems too cruel and I am not willing to sponsor it.

Calves are taken from their mother at 3 days old (usually, sometimes 6 days old) so that we can take all of her milk. My dog came from an awesome breeder. This was her 2nd litter in 5 years. My dog came health tested, utd on shots and dewormer and a puppy pack. My breeder did not ship and urged me to visit her home to meet my pups parents and grandparents in person. She opened her door, made me some tea and we talked for a nice couple of hours. Going over her breeding program, what she looks for temperament wise all while her dogs laid around on the furniture and watched tv. I could tell her dogs were pets first because they were used to the noise of the house, tell tell dog fur everywhere, mountains of toys and personalized dog dishes with each of their names on it. They had on doggie pajamas and the girls all had bows. They were super friendly and curious about me. She even sent me home after having me sign a spay/neuter contract(among a couple other contracts) with a puppy pack which included a handmade blanket with moms scent, personalized food/water dishes, 4 toys, a sample bag of food, a brush, collar, harness, leash, a bow(my puppy was a girl the boys get bowties), an outfit(it was late fall), a brush and comb, a photo album of my puppy from birth, her weight records, a puppy care packet, a bed, a 10 year Health Guarantee and a carrier. If she was still breeding I would buy from her again. Prospective owners please do your research whether buying from a breeder or shelter.

@@teatime9550 it's best to go on the official Retriever Club Website (for dogs like Labradors, Goldens, ...) or any other OFFICIAL national club for a certain breed. There you can usually find all registered(!) breeders. A good breeder will let you visit the parents or at least the mom. They will also be ready to talk about negative things. I searched for a breeder for 1,5 years until i found a few I wanted to meet. I met one and canceled all other appointments because I was happy with her. We regularly took walks with the breeders dogs, spent time at her home and talked for hours. We also got to visit the puppies once they were old enough. In between the play dates we received photos of all the puppies. We even let her select our puppy since she knows them best. It's important to be able to trust the breeder and for them to be open and honest. Something I loved about the breeder or my puppy is that she is very choosy with her puppies new owners. Do your research!

Here's a thought: to buy a living thing that can feel, like dogs, gerbils, or even fish, you and the people you live with should be required to take a class and get a license in whichever type of animal you want. All of this stuff should be taught in these classes: the work, training, costs, health concerns, how to tell legitimate breeders from criminals, everything puppy mills are, the works. Kids should have a special course with simplified information so they understand. That would cut down on EVERYTHING. Less abandonments because of less people getting animals, the demand would go down because it would take real work to get the animal (there are many people who get animals on a whim), and overall would make the world a safer place.

I have a Jack Russell x Fox Terrier (maybe some more idk) and we got him from the RSPCA when he was 1. He was incredibly stirred up; biting and growling. His neck hairs were no where to be seen, it was just skin and redness. In a few weeks he grew to love us more and more. And we didn't want to get a dog at that point, we just wanted a look and to see if they have any dogs that stay small (because we wanted an "inside dog"). We suspected that his previous owner had him as a puppy and tied him up with a rope around his neck. We got him for free but we needed to pay for stuff (idk what it's what my parents told me) and all together when we got him, he was $99! He's 3 years old now and doing perfectly fine and some of his hairs on his neck has grown back! It still has skin showing but he's in a much more loving family now. His name is Rocco! ❤️❤️

Its the same system here if you adopt a dog from a shelter. You don't pay for the dog, you pay for the vet that they made your dog go to, and also to cover some of the food they bougt for your dog and other things like that. And then you also have to have your dog sterilised, you have to take lessons, and someone comes once a year to check if everything is OK. They stop coming after a few years if they see that everything is going well.

This breaks my heart, our Cavalier breeder is great but we have dealt with other breeders who were less than honest and the animal was not in ideal shape-I couldn't turn the baby away as all I could think of was SAVE but now I realize I only made the situation worse by purchasing from someone who wasn't trustworthy. Never again, we will be so much more thorough and careful the next time. We did so much research and got referrals and everything but that in the end wasn't enough. Always go to the breeders home and survey the entire area-see the parents and make sure everyone looks amazing. If there is anything wrong just walk away and report it if you find anything that is wrong or you suspect something going on.

Yes, and don't just see the parents. Also see the certificates that prove that the breeding dogs have been tested for all genetic diseases common in the breed that could possibly be tested for. Because as shown in the video, anyone can just pretend to be a happy family who's dog happened to have a litter. I have even heard of cases where they got a stand-in female dog to pose as the mother, so that people who had been told to "look at the puppy with the mother" would be reassured and fall for them.

Christine_vlogs it does matter. If people kept buying from breeders or from people that get their puppies from a puppy farm, then the number of puppies and animals in general in shelters will increase, and at a point- more shelters may have no choice but to become a kill shelter. I know it's upsetting to see puppies being bred for money but your money by 'saving' those puppies are going to the same people that are breeding them and the cycle will just go on and on.

If you're trying to justify your own dog, stop doing that. You don't need to. Admit your mistake, promise to do better next time, and continue to love the doggo you already have. I got both of mine from breeders. My eldest is 13 this year and was the last of her litter. Nobody wanted her because she had an umbilical hernia, but she's been healthy and happy ever since it was fixed, albeit a bit hyperactive. Age has not mellowed her out at all. The little one just turned 9 last month and only weighs 3lb and everyone is always asking if she's a teacup (no, she's a dog....) even though Yorkies are often tiny dogs. I met her parents and siblings and the breeder even drove us home after I went back to pick her up a few weeks later. She has needed a couple of surgeries on her knees as she's hypermobile and they were causing her pain when walking, but she's otherwise been healthy and happy too and she was insured so most of it was covered. Maybe things are different a decade later, I don't know, but my dogs are proof that not all breeders are evil. Or at least they weren't in the past.

That's true, but I still wish people would adopt more. Some shelters are filled to the brim with dogs that need a home and in the meantime, breeders are still producing many puppies that some people somehow choose over shelter dogs. Living in a shelter forever is really not great for the dog and often they're put down if they become too full. Also, I think it's quite ridiculous that many people look for a specific dog. Does their appearance really matter that much? If you really love dogs, you should just go to a shelter and play with as many dogs and see with which one you connect the most. That should be the most important part. Besides, shelters are full of cute, small puppies too, so I don't see the problem. It's messed up that some dog breeds are so unpopular just because of the appearance of the dog. They're living beings, not objects.

Marr Morrissey i agree, but I do see why people want a purebred. I have had Bullterriers for all my life. When going for a purebred you will have some kind of assurance of their needs and character (sorey for my broken english). In shelter dogs you sometimes don't know what they've been through, so it seems easier to write down what you are looking for in a breed and find one that fits you and your life best. But I do get why people want a shelter dog too though.

I remember 3 months ago I bought a 9 week old maltipoo puppy online and the day I got her she was a perfect princess and we thought we had done the right decision and if you look at my profile picture you will see that she's in my arms and I am taking a photo with her and the next day as we had her she had thrown up a warm and then we took her to the vet and we found that she had worms and then they decided to look more into her and they found she had Parvo this is all because of us making a stupid decision and buying from a stupid breeder then after 3 days of having she died on a Wednesday night.This is the story of my puppy.Penelope.But seeing a pet store that literally had the cutest smallest puppies but they were perfectly okay but there cages sucked.

Mia Duarte Puppies in pet stores is always bad, because they don't get the interaction with their mum, litter mates and people they need.

Mia Duarte you know it's not your fault tho? I know you would feel horrible that you gave these people your money but the dog would've died anyway; either with you or someone else

Parvo doesnt necissarily mean a bad breeder.... Yes it can but not always... My pug had parvo when he was in his 2nd home at about 3 years old.... We got him shortly after and has no issue since.

where do you think pet stores get puppies from??? Puppy mills. NO good breeder will sell their dogs through a pet store without a home check, without knowing who bought their puppy and where it is going. Good breeders don't let just anyone buy a puppy, at least not without a spay/neuter contract. They don't want their kennel name and lines to be polluted with poor quality dogs.

I like this quick docco because it raises awareness of the issues these dogs face but it never once mentions adoption. That's a giant oversight!

The excess skin in the soft pallet is not excess it's the normal amount of tissue a dog should have the breeding only shortens the skull not the tissue. Pugs should have short noses not flat

One of my most favourite breeds has been the French Bulldog. It's been this way since I was a little 15 year old girl. I've always told myself that I'd get one in my adult years of life when I had a stable job, stable income, stable home... but things change. You stumble across comments such as "French Bulldogs are a genetic nightmare" and then see videos of disaster dog evolutions. And then suddenly, the idea of adoption instead of designer didn't sound so bad anymore. TLDR; KEEP MAKING THESE DOCUMENTARIES! KEEP RESEARCHING! Keep telling people how much of a genetic nightmare squash-nosed pups are! It could save a life and educate a young soul.

My family adopted a pitbull who was abandoned by coke dealers, but we've also bought my Corgi Oswallt from a breeder that 100% legit. They only had three pet Pembrooke's who were all running around the house and were clearly actually pets, one was his mother, and he was with his liter of 7, in an enclosure in the living room, I went and visited him twice before I was allowed to actually bring him home, and he was very healthy. They even kept one of the puppies because it was born with a nipped ear and nobody wanted to buy him (I would have but I just feel in love with the chubby runt) there's even a Fb group where people post pictures of all the corgis they've sold over the years. Adoption is always good and I adopted my rabbit from a shelter too, but we choose a purebred corgi because my little brother is autistic and we needed to make sure the dog had next to zero violent tendencies and was patient with children, would stay small because my mother doesn't like big dogs, was good with the elderly because my grandmother is often home alone with him during the day, and was very energetic and would be a good yard companion for my step-dad and the little guy had all those characteristics and fit the bill. Buying isn't always terrible and just works for some people who have little flexibility about what they can handle. I'm fairly certain i'll be getting a Boston terrier when I move to Boston (Ironically) because they are great city dogs and if I can't adopt one then I'll probably look to purchasing. (The pitbull moved put with my older brother so he isn't in contact with children if there was confusion)

When I went to get my dog, I was SO relieved to see his mother there as well. She was a breeding dog who was rescued from a puppy mill while she was pregnant and now I have my Gibson❤️ the mother was adopted as well! Thank you for this video, it’s a problem that people NEED to be more aware of. Also I just wanted to say, I’ve never seen a sadder dog than that poor pug after his surgery😭 it made me want to cry, he shouldn’t have to go through that.

this can be so simply sorted by customers just visiting the puppy with the mother, asking to see vet confirmation of their jabs. job done. The public need to be educated on the safe way to buy a puppy

The pug rescue groups for hundreds of miles had no adoptable dogs. There were no small dogs in the shelters. After months of trying I bought two puppies and I don't regret it.

There’s a KZfaqr I watch, Markiplier. Over two years ago he adopted a golden retriever and she wasn’t even a puppy. That’s like the only video I’ve seen of a big youtuber adopting a dog and especially an adult dog. Her name is Chica and she’s so amazing. :)
