Many white working-class men are struggling in today’s society - low education, poor jobs, high crime.
Filmmaker Dan Murdoch spends a year on the fringes of Manchester in some of Britain's most deprived estates. He finds anger, resentment and frustration. But he also finds a spirit of camaraderie among the estates that are fighting to stay above water - fighting not to be forgotten.
Greg puts on chicken for his local community and Mikey gets into a
spot of bother
Britain's Forgotten Men is an ongoing series. The first four parts will be released daily.

So glad I joined the Royal Navy when I was 17. I loved my home town of Rochdale in Lancashire, but boy did I see get to see the wider world. The town I left was starting to be, and now is, full of people like this. Some lovely people of course, but many, many lowlifes. I had a great career, learnt a trade and am now settled in Florida. I could have been one of these but, thankfully I wasn't, I didn't do drugs and I got off my ass and served!!!! So grateful to the RN.

Funny thing is, it was only 40 years ago where Newcastle and Liverpool had the largest shipbuilding sites in the world, the north east built 70% of the worlds boats. The north breathes hard sturdy working class men like no other region in England, everywhere had down and outs, but it’s not our fault that our unemployment has skyrocketed. In the space of 30 years all the steel factories, coal mines and shipyards were all closed down.

The issue with the working class, is a lot more complex than that. When we are to look at the working class as a whole they have been quite frankly betrayed by both labor, and the Tories on the basis that the working class don't really win elections anymore. I mean, 14% is no where near a majority. Compared to the roughly 60% of the middle class. Furthermore, when we are to look at their rhetoric they state that the immigrants are working for less than them. They don't want to work because they feel like they being undervalued. Which yes, it isn't stated the wages they are earning nor do we know the reason why he got "pissed off at the end". I'd argue that this video is actually quite sly, due to the usage of the music clearly meant to evoke emotions in regards to the working class. Yes, I've interacted with those that would be considered "chavs" and it is quite frankly saddening. However, at the same time the same aspects that could be argued as chav-like behavior can also be seen with those that would not be considered working class and what tends to be forgotten is that they are human too. I've seen people that would be considered middle class shit talk them and say they want to get away from them, whilst at the same time they participate in the same degenerative behavior such as drugs. Furthermore, by complaining about this you are only making this problem worse as they will begin to resent the classes above them who simply don't understand them. For example, the author of this post is a woman of color. The result of this is that they would feel that they are being spoken down upon by the filthy immigrants that have arrived to steal their jobs, the ones that have been given a hand whilst they are just left in the dirt.

Then it cost me £ 4.00 a week for a weekly bus pass to get to work, leaving me with £ 3.50 in my pocket. I think a pk of 20 cigarette cost £ 3.00 in 1986. Immigrants do the jobs that natural born citizens choose not to do. simple. They take the jobs because it’s what’s available, some of those very immigrants are trained in other areas, but cannot get jobs in their new country, take low paying jobs in hopes to better themselves and their families. This documentary is just a mirror to what’s happening in most western countries . Cant blame others for wanting to better themselves. Generational poverty screws with you.

Life is hard, life is unfair, life is against you, society will screw you over. I learned that when I was a little boy. I also learned, that, if there was no one else I can rely on, I best be up to the job of looking after me. Yup did I feel bitter, that others have life handed to them on a plate. Yup I did, I am only human. Did I let it get in the way of me making something of my life did I feck. You have three choices, you either accept what life has f=given you, work to change the system, or work to change your self. I took the 3rd. And it worked for me. You've answered your own questions. The population of the country has increased more in the past 10 years than at any point in history, yet there are less jobs than there have ever been. You do the maths. The narrative of mocking people from low income households for (correctly) blaming immigration isn't helping either. The UK does NOT need more migrant workers. There is NO JOB that native Britons cannot themselves do. It does, however, benefit corporations to hire migrant workers who will tolerate lower wages and poorer conditions than ethnic Brits would.

It's all about parenting it's always about parenting. I grew up in a council house where most days of the week there wasn't any food in the house becuase my parents had 4 kids and only my dad worked. The biggest aspiration anybody had in my family was to have kids of their own. My sister had 2 before she was 20 and they couldnt have been prouder. I saw so many traps that i could have fallen into, crime, economic depression, drugs. I moved out at an early age and went to university and have done well for myself but i find it hard to not resent my parents for the lack of support over the years. It's the same story for a lot of working class kids but not all make it out the way i did. I was a different person back then, it's hard to escape that mentality and find some ambition and drive

I see where you are coming from . i grew up in a broken home and my parents left me to my own vices before i hit my teens. no community , no social structure. Operating in this world without being socialized is very hard. Being unemployable ; i had to volunteer and then build all my life lessons working for minimum wage in a kitchen. I was never very academically successful but sometimes I think studying is a learned skill and being in a better environment , with the right encouragement/values i could of done better for myself. my pops also had an aversion to teaching me things. I think with many established working class blokes value is so hard to come by they hoard it wherever they can find it.

English people let themselves down, always blaming never want to take responsibility even the Polish Romanian and Lithuanian immigrants will surpassed them in 20 years because they work hard.

Safia Khan the problem isn’t the white immigrants, and everyone, including on some level these kids, knows that.

Went to an onboarding session at Amazon last year, with about 30 other people. It was around 50/50 immigrants and locals. When asked if anyone thought they’d fail the drugs test, 6 of the local lads put their hands up. When asked to provide proof of right to work and NI Number, these same lads hadn’t brought any even though it stated these were required in the email that was sent before the session. If you want to know why immigrants get jobs over people who live here, it’s because they don’t turn up high to recruitment sessions and they bring the correct paperwork.

There's people like this near me, they live with single mums on benefit, so no rent or Council tax, they 'do up' cars and sell them on the street for cash, sell dope, steal whatever is about, and spend all day driving around in their Subaru's and Honda's, or on mountain bikes. I work all week, Sundays too sometimes and they have better phones than me, better cars, better clothes. Pisses me off, but no way I'd want that life, it catches up with you in the end.

It's always an immigrant's if you can't get a job because of your low education level, or maybe because you are too lazy to work.

Mate the way I see it, that polish immigrant can work for £4.50/ph instead of a British white lad off council estate refusing £6.50/ph Now from an employers POV the less I pay, the more there is for me. According to state, 70-80 % nurses are non-English. My dad is a doctor and he's non-White too. Now people in council estate need to realise that hatred and going the bad path is the way forward. It's all got to do in the end with who actually want a change in their lifestyle. Britain is a multi-cultural nation and wether if one accepts it or rejects it, it's true. Kicking a particular race or religion isn't a solution it'll only create more problems than before. Imaging kicking all the foreign staff from NHS, public would be affected immensely to be seen by a doctor. Thanks for the biased media we get deluded and support the lies. Those who wanna get out of the benefit munching lifestyle can do it.
