This is a new series I (Dan) am creating about hypnosis. This is the final episode in this series of four episodes.
This fourth episode is about the dark side of hypnosis. Unlike my other three videos, because I am covering a range of topics, this isn't in historical order as such. I talk about accidentally negatively influencing others, mass hypnosis and early outlines about this, cults, politicians and advertisers using hypnosis, hypnotic seduction and more.
As I wanted to get all of this information into this final episode, it has made this episode extra long - at just over 2 hours. So, to make things easier for those who would like to watch this in sections, I've bookmarked each section of the video. You can find timings below:
01:10 Part One - Hypnotising Hitler
18:27 Part Two - Mass Hypnosis
36:03 Part Three - Political Hypnosis
01:03:27 Part Four - Con-Artists & Cult Manipulation
01:32:39 Part Five - Dying for Beliefs, Faith Healing, Advertising
01:52:53 Part Six - Mind Control, Hypnotic Seduction
You can find out more about Dr David Lewis's book Triumph of the Will? here: www.triumphofthewill.info/
The first three videos were based on content from Dan Jones hypnosis book 'Introduction to Hypnotherapy' which is book one in the 'Hypnotherapy Revealed' series (Available in paperback and Kindle eBook, more information here: smarturl.it/22y8sl)

I'm impressed that an expert hypnotist is honest enough to present the potentially negative aspects of hypnosis so forthrightly. Many if not most hypnotists, for their own self-interest, repeat the "party line" that hypnosis is completely harmless and only good can come to you if you're hypnotized. Hypnosis is a tool, and like all tools, it can be used well or badly: a hammer can help you build something beautiful, but in the hands of the wrong person it can do you in. I was especially glad you mentioned Estabrooks. His (in)famous book was one of the first things I ever read on hypnosis, and it made a huge impression on me, as much for the valuable information it contained as for the highly unethical experiments Estabrooks gleefully recounted in it. He was clearly a very sketchy man.

Due to its length and in case anyone wanted to jump in at specific points I divided it up in chapters with timestamps so that people can jump straight to where they want. I imagined that people may not have heard of or be aware of the information at the beginning and may be more interested in this as the mass hypnosis applies a lot in the world today and people don't often think about the accidental harm therapists can do, or may be interested in the middle where techniques are mentioned, especially if they have no knowledge of such things, or of the mind control stuff at the end if they are more interested in the actively overt negative manipulation of others and aspects of this topic. All the best Dan

@@DanTheTortoise I have listened to the video from the 43:00 minute mark to the 1:02:00 mark several times as it is important to understand how the masses get manipulated by the techniques mentioned. I studied NLP through Richard Bandler and find it fascinating as well. Don't get me wrong, I found the part regarding Hitler interesting and it was mentioned from my training through the NGH, how therapist can do harm whether accidental or intentional as how important it is to be accountable when working with patients/clients. The portion I referred to was intriguing from a sales perspective actually. I do appreciate the series as a whole and appreciate you responding. Thanks Dan!

If I ever get the chance to have a team helping me, I'll definitely remake it with interviews with people and better footage etc (that I can't afford to get hold of when I'm just making this here on a KZfaq channel). How does one get past groups/individuals that claim you've agreed to circumstances/performed actions you know _for certain_ that you wouldn't but utilized hypnosis to frame things in such a way that you might due to being unconscious/having your wits truncated basically? That have literally stolen chunks of time from your life by having you in trance during these moments you *never* consented to? Is it possible to recall these moments they've suggested you forget through an ethical practitioner? Plus the most salient question is - how to bolster one's self against unwanted induction?

How long does a hypnotic suggestion last ? Does it wear off after a while ?
@DanTheTortoise
@DanTheTortoise 3 жыл бұрын
Hypnotic suggestions can likely last a lifetime, in research studies they have been shown to definitely last many decades. Whether they wear off would usually depend on the suggestion given and the response to that suggestion and contexts etc. For example, if I suggested that each time someone touches their right ear, they will feel a deep sense of calm, then this may happen initially, but if they keep touching their ear when anxious to evoke that calmness, then they are connecting/suggesting to themselves the idea of anxiety at the same time, so the calmness from touching their ear wears off over time. There may also be times they touch their ear and don't want to feel that calmness, so they overrule the feeling and again are then watering down the suggestion. The can practice regularly to keep the suggestion active and so it wearing down. But other suggestions maybe they never want to overrule it and only ever experienced it one way, life every time you think of cigarettes you will feel disgust towards them, every time they think of cigarettes they may well feel disgust and this reinforces the suggestion and is almost like giving the suggestion again. Other times maybe a long time passes, so I could use a tone of voice when hypnotising someone and maybe twenty years later they come to therapy for something else and I can just use that tone of voice again in that context and without me having to do anything else they drift into hypnosis because, although they were never told this tone of voice means to be hypnotised and they haven't encountered me for years, they still know that this tone of voice means be hypnotised, all when it happens, they respond to it like they did when the idea was first presented to them.

I've just checked and experienced the same thing. There is nothing I can do about it unfortunately, at least that is the only problem. The original video obviously doesn't have that problem, but it is common, at least for me, to find faults in long videos especially that I upload to KZfaq, so if the only significant fault is right at the end that is okay. My only option would be to keep uploading the video and watching through until there are no faults.

Would you kindly say something about the music you used in this video? What is it and what was your intention in having it constantly in the background.
@DanTheTortoise
@DanTheTortoise Жыл бұрын
It was just my own music and the choice to have music in the background was so that the video wasn't just my voice. If I was making the video again I probably wouldn't add the music or would turn the volume down even further. On some devices, like my computer or TV, the music is barely noticeable, but on other devices, like my mobile phone, the music is too noticeable just because of the way different speaker setups work...

There are many interesting books, most things were referenced in the video. Dr David Lewis' book about Hitler is a good book to read about the stuff I mentioned about Hitler. You can read Hypnotism by George Estabrooks to learn more about mass hypnosis and misuses of hypnosis. There are many other books on this topic (including: Open to Suggestion, Brainwash, The Ellipsis Manual, and The 231 Club). The plan for one of my Hypnotherapy Revealed books I plan on writing is about the dark side of hypnosis. I've written about 30,000 words of the book, but haven't been in a financial position to be able to continue writing it and I don't think it would get enough sales to justify writing it, so it has sat partially written for almost a decade.

@DanTheTortoise 3 ай бұрын
I don't know if you are referring to the information at the start about stage hypnosis, and negative reactions in hypnosis/therapy or what I have listed as part one about Dr Forster's work with Hitler? For stage hypnosis/therapy, generally the research shows it is safe. The times negative reactions happen are very specific to individuals. For example, imagine a stage hypnotist tells someone with a fear of drowning (unknown to the hypnotist) that they will imagine being underwater scuba diving (or perhaps the person has other fears relating to this situation). A good hypnotist will check in with participants about what is about to be suggested and whether they are comfortable with this and will focus on those who are, but some hypnotists don't do this and can encourage people to imagine things which those people specifically find distressing and can be traumatic. The same in therapy, not just hypnotherapy, where some people respond to something negatively. There are different papers about this and generally about how safe hypnosis is to use and it is only in these very specific scenarios where people have negative reactions, although that doesn't mean that more people than actually have negative reactions, think they have/are experiencing something negative or unpleasant. For example, Derren Brown has shared about times people in his audiences will claim to be hypnotised/still hypnotised and struggling due to this, even people who he has never worked with - one example he has given before was someone coming up to the stage, but because they were drunk he sent them away. Later - because they were drunk, an incident occurred and they blamed Derren saying it was because he hypnotised them. Stage hypnotists are regularly told to video record all shows so that you have evidence of exactly what took place. Hypnotists know that hypnosis isn't a state someone is in and is someone engaging in following along to what the hypnotist suggests and that they can decide not to do this at any point. It isn't something they will be trapped in and they don't have to do anything suggested if they don't want to, but some people will act as if they were powerless, controlled, stuck in a state, stuck with a suggestion etc. Many stage hypnotists make a big point that they aren't 'hypnotising' you, that there isn't any such thing as a hypnotic state, but that doesn't stop people acting as if there is at times. This is covered in most academic books teaching about hypnosis, where they will say the risks are minimal, but some people will respond in this way, and technically it isn't the hypnosis that is the problem, but it might be what the hypnotist or therapist focused on or the beliefs about what happened/was taking place of the subject/client. If it is about Dr Forster's work with Hitler, or Hitler's later work with Erik Jan Hanussen to learn how to hypnotise the masses, as mentioned in the video, this is covered in a lot more detail in Dr David Lewis' book 'Triumph of the Will?: How Two Men Hypnotised Hitler And Changed The World' from 2018.

How does a person know if they have been hypnotized before & made to forget ?
@DanTheTortoise
@DanTheTortoise 3 жыл бұрын
Most people would know, or if they were uncomfortable for some reason whole the ideas were being presented and uncomfortable with the idea of forgetting, most people just wouldn't follow the presented ideas because they wouldn't want to and maybe would even have decided to disengage before any ideas were being presented because maybe they feel like they are being manipulated etc. A small percentage of people who engage in being hypnotised, may engage with the whole thing, including having amnesia suggested and may genuinely not remember the experience, but this is very hard to achieve with people, so that person would would likely be selected for their incredible skill at responding. Of these people, none would be likely to do something they are uncomfortable with unless many other factors, like mentioned in the video, were at play. If someone was hypnotised and encouraged to forget they were hypnotised, and that was it, then it doesn't really matter that they can't remember being hypnotised, we all forget most things from most days as a natural part of living life. If positive ideas were presented and being encouraged to forget that you had been presented with these ideas was suggested as a way of reducing the chances of you sabotaging therapy, then again, you would remember you went to see the therapist, you would remember you had hypnosis used, but would likely only have a vague idea of what happened during the hypnosis, but by deciding not to unpick it is what will help the therapeutic ideas work best. The more likely experience in every day life is that you aren't specifically presented with the idea to forget you have been hypnotised, but that you don't recognise you have been hypnotised because of your ideas of what you think hypnosis is. It could be for example that every time I notice a specific person at a party laugh I tap on a glass in a clear pattern so that I'm creating a suggestion where me tapping on a glass in that way will trigger the laughter. The person may be totally unaware of what I'm doing, they may even not be engaging with me and so not even aware of me at the party, but every time they laugh, they hear the tapping, they don't consciously pay attention to the tapping because they are engaging with others, laughing, having fun etc, but nonconsciously they begin to recognise the pattern and take onboard the suggestion and then any time I see them in the future I can tap on a glass in that way and they laugh uncontrollably without knowing why. I could hypnotise someone with my breathing and present ideas through my breathing and the person would likely be unaware they were hypnotised because they maybe don't have knowledge or experience with hypnosis. No suggestion for amnesia is given, yet the person has been hypnotised and may carry out certain behaviours because of it, without ever realising they were hypnotised or that they are doing things because of the experience.

Can a person seduce another person in Hypnotic trance ? Like giving a trigger word... which make them more affectionate... or even orgsm ?
@DanTheTortoise
@DanTheTortoise 3 жыл бұрын
If the person was uncomfortable with the experience they can get up, walk out, etc. The bigger thing at play would be if the person was scared or intimidated etc and so remained in the situation because of this. It wouldn't be because they were hypnotised, but because of the power and control the person was asserting on another person, like integer abuse situations. Part of this power and control may me the person trying to assert that the person has to do as they are told or they are bad etc, or that what is happening is somehow their fault etc. Obviously, as mentioned in the video, people can use hypnotic techniques for seduction, in terms of things like intentionally making someone feel good when thinking about them etc and you can obviously use suggestions and various hypnotic techniques to encourage orgasm etc...

Will circle back to watch this but by the title and comments I can tell you're debunking the much-propagated idea that hypnosis is strictly beneficial and helps people with their bad habits and weaknesses - which I'm sure it can but there are reports OF it being used maliciously. Thanks in advance. One TEDTalk orator showed a practitioner having his passenger film him hypnotizing a visibly upset police officer out of giving him a definitive ticket for blowing past a stop sign/red light. The guy is well-known too. If he's willing to show himself doing that to a law officer, what else is he doing in private? Hypnosis has been utilized as a gateway to heinous crimes, violating rights, is/was illegal in certain locations and should be unilaterally _unless_ the subject specifically asks for the procedure, visits the advertised business for the purpose and records the session for their records and posterity. Hypnosis is deemed as innocuous as the practitioner's motives.
