There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

This could honestly have been the next Game Of Thrones if it had been made into a TV series. Trying to fit 7 books into one film is the same as making all the Harry Potter books into a single movie..... it can't be done. Mr King spent over 20 years writing the main story line in this series and it deserves more than a rushed 2+ hour film.

In September 2016, Entertainment Weekly reported that following the release of the film, a TV series set within the same continuity is scheduled to be released in 2018. Both Elba and Taylor are set to reprise their roles as Roland and Jake respectively. Reportedly the series will potentially fill in the backstory to the film, being based on King's The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, and star a younger actor playing a young Roland

The true genius of The Dark Tower series is how it literally ties together like half of all the King novels ever written. Characters from The Stand (including King's favorite go to bad guy Randall Flagg), Hearts in Atlantis, Salem's Lot etc etc. are included throughout the seven novels. An absolutely genius move on King's part financially, since to truly get the full force of the Dark Tower, you really did have to go back and read all of his older work that led up to this.

Does anyone else notice how they put mini teasers in front of actual trailers now? What's with that? Is it supposed to get you excited about what you're going to see in a few seconds?
@markmarkess4264
@markmarkess4264 7 жыл бұрын
Evan Saltare The reason according to Business Insider: "The mini-trailer isn’t for you or me, It’s there for the random person on Facebook. That trailer highlight reel, which autoplays as a person scrolls through their mobile Facebook feed, is designed to catch a reader’s eye. Since people are scrolling quickly, the trailer only has a second or two to grab them before they’re on to the next thing. And since all trailers start with the same bland boring MPAA green card, this is a way to hook an audience immediately."

A few years ago when the "skip in 5 seconds" button became prevalent on youtube, I thought to myself, eventually, these companies are going to notice this and try to cram something really interesting into the first 5 seconds to make people not press the skip button. When I first saw these really short trailer-before-the-trailers, I knew this was the reason. A trailer is to convince us to see the film, the mini is there to convince you to watch the trailer.

Thoughts from Stephen King: “It was great to see Idris Elba as Roland. He has terrific focus and tremendous energy as Roland. Mathew McConaughey is very scary and very intense as Walter. I love that right away you set up the tension between the two of them.” Also, “What I’ve always enjoyed is seeing my stories serving as a launching pad of some new or adapted vision of what I’ve done. The people involved in the movie all had the latitude, which I was happy to give them, to reinvent it.”

+kain kabil King has already seen the movie. He remarked, "I thought that the trailer was terrific, and I’ve seen the movie, and I think it’s also terrific. I think people are going to be very pleased with both that and The Dark Tower. I’m very fortunate about that." He also said, that "It’s really sort of a stew, which is one of the reasons why I love this movie for taking ideas from the book and joining them in a different way, while keeping the cores of the books."

It's more likely that King will have a cameo in the movie (as he's done with practically all of his movies), but they'll treat the character King writes as a character and get someone else to portray the role. When King was in the books it flopped back and forth between being 24 or 25 and then his early fifties during the accident and the second time he interacts with the gunslinger and crew.

exactly! but the main problem is probably the whole format. the book series is entirely too long for films and it touches subjects that scares filmstudios. also adding that Roland isn't really a likable main character, at least not at the start of the books. just imagine The Dark Tower as a tv-series with an R-rating. that's what it should have been @@SamTerrazas

They might as well have called the movie something else and changed the names of the characters. It really is very different. As far as an action movie goes, it’s not bad, but if you had spent years with this series, reading it as King was writing and anticipating a movie about a book series you have loved and then you find out that it is not at all like the books, I think you would feel some disappointment too. There is just so much that the movie left out or got wrong. Anyway, if you liked it, great, but I doubt you will find many fans of the books liking it, and you would think that audience would be the one that they’d want to watch this movie the most.

Everyone has a different taste in movies and if it sucks for you, it will be great for others. You can never compare a book with a movie. Those are 2 different things. The book is usually better cause you create your own characters and scenes, thats why you like it more than the movie.

Due to certain plot devices I wouldn't want to spoil, you COULD probably watch this with no prior knowledge, but you'd be missing out on HUGE amounts of flavor and backstory if you didn't read the books. It's basically a personal choice, because there are 7 books and they get LOOOOOOONG, so it just depends on if you want to try and power through them before you see the movie. Edit: I guess 8 books, if you count 'The Wind Through the Keyhole". Arguably many more if you count all the books that reference and tie into the main series. But the 7 main books should be just fine.

One thing I think people didn’t like, or maybe didn’t get, is that - at least in the movie - this story is essentially happening in a tween boy’s mind. As such, some of the plot points, dialogue, etc felt a bit….juvenile? Like, plot holes, cheesy dialogue, etc. But that’s one of the things I love about it! Other examples of this type of subtle departure from typical narrative perspective would be: - Axe Cop, the professionally illustrated graphic novel series…where the illustrator’s 5yo brother dictated all of the plots/words/character descriptions and the illustrator jotted it down like it was all serious 😆 - The Killing of a Sacred Deer: don’t wanna spoil this one too much, but basically, it took me until the end of the movie to realize the reason it was so stilted and strange and unrealistic is bc it was basically the revenge plot of an antisocial, developmentally delayed teen rewriting the people and happenings in his real life to be how he wanted.
