Minecon used to be minecrafts famous yearly gathering, where some historical, and historically cringe moments were made. In 2017 that would all change though, and now we have Minecraft Live instead. But what happened to minecons, why were they cancelled and will they return?

The thing that really grinds my gears about there being no more in-person Minecons is not just the fact that Mojang stopped doing them but rather the fact that they evidently have gone out of their way to keep other people from doing in-person Minecon events as well. To add insult to injury, Mojang even supported these events for a while so to see them (or Microsoft) eseentially backstab those who hosted events like Minecon is truly gut wrenching.

FYI, word i heard is that the minefaire scam thing really really burned Mojang on third party hosted events. The community guidelines change was a deliberate attempt to ensure they have as much legal distance as they can from anything like that in future.

I kind of wish they didn't use such a scorched earth policy. It seems to follow in line with what they've been doing with chat reporting, skin and name reporting, trying to micromanage the modding and server community with stuff like guns. There's inevitably going to be bad eggs in every community, but their weird need to have absolutely 0 negative outcomes with any of their systems is a bit much. And in return, they've only gained an even more negative image of themselves, for being killjoys overstepping boundaries. Its really sad that one scam of an event permanently turned away any chance of future events, Minevention seemed promising and Mojang absolutely did them dirty.

Honestly it feels like if in person Minecraft events did come back a lot of people would just care about the capes (and this year even that has kind of been done on Bedrock edition with exclusive Character creator items from watching the stream and the mob vote server)

There has always been people who care only about that, but honestly if Mojang put effort into the event, you could have something the playerbase actually looks forwards to. Imagine something like "Talk with Scicraft!", "Hermitcraft AmA event!", "UHC LAN event!", "Build something cool in 5mins event!", stuff that actually makes you want to participate in the event and interact with other players.

Man, I will never not miss the early 2010's Minecraft. I wish I was extroverted enough and old enough to attend Minecon 2010 and 2012 back then. There was so much charm to the early days, even if there was plenty of questionable stuff too.

Mojang/Microsoft has been quite disappointing these past three plus years for so many reasons including the issues addressed in the video. From adding in-game chat/skin/name reporting, to controversial mob votes, to mostly updates (1.19 & 1.20) in my opinion that were just ok. It just seems like Mojang is better at upsetting and underdelivering us than making the community happy and excited for the game. My expectations for tomorrow's Minecraft Live are low, I just hope 1.21 can excite me more in the way that 1.16 did for me and many others.

I really blame Microsoft for everything that had been going wrong for the game. Microsoft sees Minecraft not as a game, but as a brand they can profit off of and have no regard for the community.

Yes, I fully agree. The last “good“ minecraft update was in December 2021. My friends even fully stopped playing the game because of the lack of good and new content.

I was at minecon 2016 and I have to say much of it was awkward. I remember seeing kids crying over not being able to ask questions in the panels. I still have the purple sheep and enderman bags that were given. It wasn't great though, lines took an eternity to get a damn sheep plush. I miss it though.

Man, I feel that. Its so frustrating how they've just repeatedly slapped the community in the face. I've grown away from it for a while now, and have switched to playing Vintage Story. So far their dev team has been practically the antithesis of modern Mojang.

I am almost an adult meaning I still need an adult to go to things such as these because there's no chance it happens in my country, back in 2021, I have arranged with one of the adults from my family to go to Minecraft festival once it does happen after vovid died down, it did, no festival in sight though, ever since then year from year my main motivation to watching the streams is to hear if Minecraft festival gets finally announced, aside of hearing about the new update obviously. Such a disappointment how they started treating community-hosted conventions recently too.

Fresh from Final Fantasy XIV Fanfest, I wish Minecraft would hold in-person conventions again. It is just such a magical experience to be surrounded by people who share similar interests with you and I'm still riding the high from that convention even though it's been months. Any large scale game deserves a convention for it's community.

Oh dear. I can't believe my improper usage of "to" was captured in video. lol I will say, I wish I would have made it work to attend Minecon 2016 - despite being tight on money due to college. I definitely missed out on meeting several online friends that did choose to attend that year in Anaheim. Oh well. :) Thanks for the video.

I sometimes feel kinda bad for mojang cause Microsoft is so heavily profit based, but also minecraft was and is consistently pushed towards younger target audiences that means that more and more rules and regulations have to be implemented to protect said children. The amount of focus groups and hoops minecraft devs probably have to go through for every single event or update is probably insane.

What kind of "valid"? "You could be using such and such technical solution"? Or "How dare you not reseale an end update right now?" Or screaming at an ex-modder for not doing stuff as cool as in mods? Or asking developers to speak on legal issues, even though it's not something they know enough about because they're not lawyers? Also those events would be swamped with kids and mostly have creators rather than developers, I doubt you'd be happy with that.

As someone who've had to plan events before, it's pretty hard to do so. You would probably need an entire team dedicated to that, which they still are trying to get these livestream events together. If I was them, I would get Minecraft live to be the best they can make it, them work on Minecraft Festival. I have a club (which is so much smaller scale), and we hold "unofficial events" just to get through the checks and balances and to just hang out. But I think they're taking it one step at a time and we'll see it in a couple years or so

I was fortunate enough to go to the last legitimate minefaire near me, and it was nice experience. Saw a ton of great people (JeromeASF), and others. Along with tons of fun activities. So much fun. I wish Mojang endorsed more stuff like it. I mean they had plushies, a live build battle on legacy console, and their own unique plushies. I got my hands on the blue sheep. Icon for the event. Hell they even had a bunch of prototype toys by 3rd parties, like a “Minecart” aka a lego baseplate on an RC Car. Which im so sad has gone nowhere.

Dropping in real fast to say that I personally attendended Minefaire in 2018. It certainly was not a "Minecon experience" but it was cool to meet some of the community folks. I'm really only bummed about that part in regards to in-person events.

To be fair the guideline changes might not be a sign of everything being cancelled. Those guidelines are for other people to follow, not mojang. It could potentially be that no one outside of mojang makes an event that gets big, overshadowing any current plans for an event. It's not uncommon to see that kinda thing when the company has plans/has their own event/etc to stop people attempting to replace their official stuff.

I personal think it would be cool if they had perhaps a form of server during minecraft live where some form of community activity can happen and have capes handed out for playing some about of time or doing some activity and have it available for java (and not im not talking about the bedrock voting server). it really is a shame that stuff like minecon dosnt work as well as it used to.

Minecraft Live this year was weird, in a bad way. Too much useless filler and almost nothing pertaining to the 1.21 update. The only reason I had watched these was to know what the next update would be. The recap videos that come out afterwards thanks to other KZfaqrs are much better. Shorter, straight to the point, no irritating filler. The recaps are much more comprehensive, too.

For the mob vote instead of just 1 mob have it be a boss or mini boss we vote on and just add new mobs whenever. We have 2 boss HP bar bosses and 2 minibosses with the elder guardian and warden while the dragon and wither have meaningful drops the guardian isn’t bad but not all that good and the warden is more of a stealth obstacle. For the vote it could be a nether only boss (piglin war chief), a desert mummy, and the queen phantom (end city). All of these bosses would have special structures and drops to explore while giving more things to do in those biomes, and for regular mobs they could add them when ready like armadillo in the early spring, crab summer, and penguin late winter. If we should vote for a new mob that mob should be more meaningful than a random animal with a gimmick drop

I've had high hopes for Minecraft Festival because the chances of me going there were very high since it would've happened 1 state away from where I live. But then Microsoft or Mojang(you guys decide) would start making me lose faith in them. I don't think Festival is coming back. Let's face it guys. I don't think they have the guts to bring it back after all they've been through.

I think it’d be cool if they had several conventions all hosted at the same time, then they have one segment in LA, then for the next segment they switch to the east coast. With different people of interest at each event.

I never got to go to Minecon as a young lad, due to it being both pricey and in America where I'm passportless in Canada, and grew up on welfare. What makes me sad is I never got to get one of the capes. I always saw folks with that pretty Minecon cape and get so envious lmao. I wish they would give out capes more, especially to veteran players and such. Even just being able to design a cape like you would a skin would be neat, though due to the ability to copy famous and rare capes, I understand why that'd never ever exist. Unfortunate.

When a niche thing that a few dedicated people love becomes mainstream, it just becomes watered down and it loses a piece of it's soul. It's happened time and time again; roleplaying, comic books, sports, video games, etc

2 years ago i remember saving up my money for the minecraft festival, im still saving, still going, no festival yet, maby ill use the money to buy a house when i grow up, there will probably never be a festival to spend it on.

I have to imagine that the new EULA banning in-person minecraft conventions/meetups/whatever you want to call it, came down from Microsoft. Those sorts of decisions we really don't get clarification on who ordered it, but it really feels out of character for mojang imo.

I'm not a betting person, but them completely restricting large-scale Minecraft-related gatherings is strange without in-turn announcing a proper official event to make up for it... Another con will _probably_ happen eventually. I'd doubt they would just scrap the idea entirely despite all their attempts to revive it; But it's most-definitely not going to happen *this* year. Best thing to do is hold out for 2024...?

As a kid, I always wanted to go to a minecon and get a cape. I thought the enderman cape was awesome. Now it’ll never happen… they could have at least continued the cape tradition with their live streams, but they didn’t. Now the only cape I have, and will likely ever have, is the migration cape that just about everyone has anyway. Instead of a cape celebrating a fun event, it’s a cape marking the downfall of Minecraft as Microsoft squeezes every last penny out of it.

I am missing Minecons, since I never got the chance to go to one(I was too young, even in 2016, and I di not own Minecraft). Now i have the game, but Minecon is no more😢

Personally from what I've noted publicly. Mojang seems to be in management and qa hell along with a political(?) Agenda in how they make and promote content. Alongside this, disillusioned and disenfranchised developers clearly exist within their teams considering the recent egregious nda violations by 2 developers on leaks and the public outcry regarding management and other wasted talent in tweets by former or current employees

True. They've seen to have got caught up in trying to follow a certain ruleset of appeasing the higher ups at Microsoft and trying to maximize profits that it seems to me like it's lost its "soul." I get they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do, im just bit sad it has gotten this way

For some reason I get a feeling that Micro$oft meddled with the hiring process and ended up with employees more aligned to Micro$oft goals than Mojang. They're still independent, but its clear that internally things just aren't what they used to be. A lot of the stuff from the past few years feels like it was made by people intent on "changing the world" or something with their work in Minecraft instead of catering to the community and improving things, and have just led to a confused mess of a game and community.

I don’t like the idea that Mojang would only promote ethical treatment of animals or trans rights because of pressure from the suits in Redmond, I would imagine devs want to do that themselves

I attended Minecon in Orlando. Im glad i did, even if it was already overrun with children lol. I got signatures from all the development crew and even managed to chase down Notch for one at Islands of Adventure. Its sad that so many will never be able to experience community lioe that. But there are new communities formimg every day, new opportunities every year, even if theres is no guarantee they will be there the year after. Point is, dont hesitate. Get out there and experience the things you want to experience, because you never know how long the opportunity will last. But don't be so beat up about the things you do miss thst you missout on new opportunities 😊

I think another factor to why Minecon stopped is due to the value of caped accounts being stolen, hacked and resold by scalpers.

Its kind of sad that any unique thing within a popular online space like Minecraft is sought after purely for monetary value now. The original premise as some neat little memento for attending an event is cool, it sucks that the community ruined it.

The small community events could have been a good idea if they: - were 100% official (instead of being 3rd party) - had more promotion (instead of a single tweet/video) - were hosted in more locations around the world - and also were hosted maybe once every two years or so Some of them could even be more oriented towards the adult audience, or schedule it in a way some days of the events are for the kiddos. It's a shame honestly, it just seems like Microsoft/Mojang are too busy doing uh whatever they do all year.

That would be cool, but also it's a LOT of resources. And they'd also have to wait a long time to have the money spent be earned back through tickets, it's a pretty risky investment.
