Whoever designed Aatrox's character needs a raise

Perhaps the reason why aatrox shouts so much is because he spent centuries in the dark with no one to hear him and never wants to be left unheard again

I love how aatrox has 3 types of dialogue, the first is where he talks in a villain way, wishing death to all. The second are those where he questions his ideals. And the third is him straight up admitting that this horrifying killing machine is not him, but an empty shell of what used to be a noble warrior

In my opinion, Aatrox is one of the best written characters I have ever seen. One can not even begin to comprehend the depth of his feelings, the voice actor did a tremendously good job in enacting his grief. This was haunting. I'm used to the really funny voice lines that Aatrox has, hell people criticised the reworked version of him for being too humorous. Hearing all these lines is nothing less than a realisation that Aatrox is so much more than a joke. You can hear his pain, hear his misery, hear his regret and hear his desire for revenge. It's haunting, so beautifully haunting. Although, let's not forget how funny this guy is. He roasts Varus and Rhaast like it's no ones business.

And somehow they have Lux in this same game.

"Let me make them regret... Being free." I like this line a lot. It really shows how much contempt and envy Aatrox feels for everyone else in the world who doesn't have his hellish nightmare of an existence.

Aatrox lore in case you don't get the quotes (updated with TL;DR version below now) I Aatrox was a Shuriman warrior who fought for the empire. He was a very skilled warrior and was brought up for Ascension, he was not made into an animal-like being like many others who had undergone this ritual, instead he resembled an angel it is said that "his wings were the golden light of dawn, and his armor sparkled like a constellation of hope from beyond the great veil." Aatrox was at the front of countless battles, the other god-warriors (other Ascended beings) were always at his side along with 10,000 warriors marching in unison behind him. Setaka, an ascended warrior queen called for Aatrox to deal with the rebellion of Icathia and Aatrox answered the call. Although Aatrox and the other god-warriors expected only to be fighting human soldiers they found something much more sinister. The Icathians knew that Shurima would crush them and reclaim Icathia but they had a plan in mind, they searched and searched for power that they could use against these god-warriors and they found it, Zilean who was a member of the mage council of Icathia advised against this but it was already too late. They made up their minds and they did destroy many god-warriors, yes, but they also destroyed their own city and brought the Void into the world for the second time. They used the power of the Void to crush their enemies but they could not control it, instead the creatures of insatiable hunger devoured everything in Icathia leaving nothing but a barren landscape and ruins of a once-great city. With the Void running rampant through Shurima it was up to the god-warriors to push them back into their realm. The god-warriors succeeded in pushing the Void back but they lost many comrades and everyone lost something in the war against the Void, even Aatrox. As Shurima fell the god-warriors became without purpose, the Void was pushed back and they had no monarch to protect so they started fighting amongst each other for dominance of the world. The god-warriors became demon-like at around this point because they used a special kind of magic they learned to use from the Void, you see the Void couldn't fully corrupt the god-warriors but it did leave maddening whispers in their heads, the Darkin simply learned from this voice and transformed the power of the Void into Blood Magic which helped them kill easier and even weave flesh into armor (the grey parts of Aatrox's body are an example of this armor). The god-warriors were no longer Sunborn (also another name for Ascended), they were now known as the Darkin meaning "the dark ones" in Shuriman. The Great Darkin War as it would come to be known as became so widespread and chaotic that the Targonians were forced to intervene. The Aspect of Twilight (not Zoe at this point in time, but a girl named Myisha) gave the mortals knowledge of how to trap the Darkin while Pantheon the Aspect of War (not the Aspect of War possessing the human Atreus at this point in time either, unknown host) cut down the lesser Darkin while the five strongest were sealed within prisons. Aatrox was of the strongest Darkin and was sealed away with the power of "a thousand suns" as Aatrox himself put it. Aatrox was sealed away inside his own blade and was unable to use any of his senses, he couldn't even breathe. This time away inside his prison was where Aatrox became truly insane. Although this prison would not last forever, a foolish boy ran into where Aatrox was sealed away running from soldiers. The boy saw the blade and picked it up, Aatrox saw his chance and took it. He spread his form around the mortal's body until only Aatrox remained, and the mortal was no more. With stolen flesh Aatrox killed and killed and killed to try and reclaim his former Ascended form and divinity but it was pointless. Aatrox could never return to his former ascended form so in desperation he came up with the idea that if he could not destroy the blade or himself then he would plunge existence into an apocalyptic war where everything would come undone, hopefully, even once noble Aatrox. Ascension can go different ways, some turn into animals while others somewhat keep their original form an example of these are Aatrox and Xerath. There were also failed Ascension rituals that made a human malformed, although there isn't much lore on these creatures they are known as the Baccai and are always exiled. Thousands of years later Aatrox took over a mortal body and began trying to return to his ascended form but eventually he learned he would never be free of his prison so he came to the idea that if he could not destroy his blade (also his prison) he would bring war and death wherever he goes to turn all of creation into an apocalyptic battle where he hopes he will cease to exist. He constantly shouts to force himself into battle, to remind himself that he can either suffer alone or he can make others suffer alongside himself. His hatred is his way of forcing his nobility to bow before his death wish... they did not do him a favor by locking him away.

I love your portrayal of the champs you do man. Aatrox showing how holy he was, almost a crusader against all that was bad. Corrupted and changed to the animal that he kept caged, scraping anything on the floor for survival and strengthening every second from his rage until he’s the darkness he himself imagined when he fought them.

I was always thought that Aatrox speaking in 3rd person was abit put of place, then hearing this, i see why: He's convincing himself, forcing himself to say these lines cus he's probably trying to stop himself from going more insane than he is. Its very very sad. The old Aatrox can litherally be the younger version of this Aatrox, thinking he had purpose in the battlefield, spreading wars and bloodshed all around, but it went for far too long, and now we have this broken man trying to kill himself by finding a worthy opponent.

I really love the way he speaks, you can hear tiny sobs between his words, you can feel his unending sadness and despair. He is such a tragic character.

"I march to death... though i wish it was my own." "We had another name once... Now, we are Darkin." Even if hes edgy, i love how hes Spawn-esque. He laments on his change, laments how he used to be a force for good, but is now trapped and a prisoner. Yet theres plenty of voice lines that speak about him bringing death and destruction, such as when he ults its very clear he fully embraces being Darkin. I know League isnt so much about the lore but goddamn they did a good job making a conflicted and multi-dimensional character with Aatrox.

Always hated how people shitted on this when he first came out. It's so fucking good and I think Riot just didn't do a good job selling him as the tragic character he is. This video does that job amazingly. The way you ordered the voice lines, it tells a story and it also shows him becoming more angry and pained about his existence and his fall from grace.

What is sad is that he used to hate what he has become. He not only wanted to be a good guy, but he wanted to stop needlessly killing. Now that he has this hatred for everything because of what he had to suffer through, he has no choice but to keep killing. The other option is to be to trapped and suffocated indefinitely inside his sword. So he has to keep fighting and taking over hosts. No other choice. If anyone has read the lore, you would know that Aatrox loathed the name “darkin”. To Aatrox, this name was a stain on his noble purpose as the defender of shurima. He wanted to return shurima to its former glory and be seen once more as a good person. But then he was tricked by Zoe and trapped in his own blade to suffer forever. Eventually, he grew to hate everything. That is why he keeps calling himself darkin. He wants to strike fear in the hearts of mortals. He has given up on trying to be the good guy. I like how the new Aatrox and Pantheon have a similar accent since they both originated from the same region when they were mortal. When Aatrox was an Ascended warroir for Shurima he even looked up to Pantheon. Now he has slain the Deity he once admired and left is the mortal who was once the vessel for Pantheon as Pantheon's rework. Champion and story update go hand in hand and the circle closes. Good storytelling Riot.

Arguably the best thing about Aatrox's lines and how bombastic they are is that they are equal parts an act and coping mechanism. He *needs* to be hated, to be reviled and fought against, because combat and fresh hosts are the only thing keeping him from going back to sensory deprivation hell inside the sword.
