In 1909, college football faced a devastating crisis when several players suffered serious injuries and deaths on the field.
It began with quarterback Earl Wilson from Navy, who broke his neck during a game against Villanova, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down until he passed away in April 1910. Just two weeks later, Army tackle Eugene Byrne was killed during a game against Harvard, where he was continuously targeted in mass plays. The following month, promising halfback Archer Christian from the University of Virginia suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage in a game against Georgetown.
These tragic incidents sparked widespread outrage and led to the cancellation of games by Navy, Army, Virginia, and other schools. The New York Times called for an end to mass plays, and there were growing demands for the abolition or serious reform of football. The crisis of 1909 highlighted the need for substantial changes to ensure player safety.
The article emphasizes that the 1905 crisis, which prompted rule changes, failed to address the issue of mass plays. Mass plays involved a group of players converging on a single point on the defense, causing dangerous pile-ups and putting immense pressure on players at the bottom of the pile.
The safety debate extended beyond colleges, with many prep schools also abolishing football. The situation led to a nationwide movement, and some states considered laws to outlaw the sport.
The video concludes by suggesting that the future response to the crisis would shape the evolution of modern football. It emphasizes the need for eliminating mass plays and making the game safer for players.
Overall, the video will discuss the tragic events of 1909, the subsequent crisis in college football, and the demands for reform to ensure player safety, particularly in regards to mass plays.

Great show! I've heard that the Army-Navy game was suspended for a number of years in the 1890's because President Roosevelt thought that it was too dangerous or too emotions were too severe between the service academies. This seems to be contrary to his opinion in 1905 about the sport. It this true? Did he change his mind in the intervening years?

I don't think Roosevelt was as involved in football as much as everyone tries to give him credit for. Roosevelt was a Harvard man, and more concerned about Yale's prominence in football than the services. I have read two things about the suspension. - Both services were concerned about how dangerous the sport was, so they limited play to their own grounds. (Back then, rules were loosely applied, and you played by the home team's rules, which could sometimes be sketchy.) - There was a dispute amongst officers and both services were worried about that becoming more.. well, deadly than it would be otherwise.

May have been later, as Teddy was not President until 1901.

We're there college teams that had no coaches?? Around 10:00 I get that impression.

Maybe coaches only in name, nobody was coaching or coaches did not know game at all and just let players do own thing.

@@christopherTYJ Football was so new a Sport and always changing in massive ways, I am sure a few schools had this issue and just had a placeholder as coach.

I think he meant that below college level teams were frequently uncoached. Probably referring partly to nonacademic amateur or pro clubs, partly to interscholastic and children's games, and partly to pickup games.

Those plays were many players fell down on top of the crawling ball carrier sound a lot like the end zone piles that occur after a huge victory, same after a World series victory. I remember when baseball player Dave Dravecky, who was recovering from cancer and hadn't even played in the game, broke his arm in a post game celebration and eventually had it amputated. I know if I scored the winning TD in a big game I would keep running to avoid being on bottom of the pile.

Dravecky broke his arm throwing a pitch in an SF Giants game after coming back from cancer surgery. I have seen the video of this incident a few times over my life. (I don't recal if I was watching the game live though.)
