The parody genre died after the Wayans family left the Scary Movie franchise.

I admit Scary Movie 3 still has its moments that make me laugh, in particular Brenda vs. the Ring,lol.

My dad recently passed after a long battle with cancer, and that weekend a TV channel just happened to be playing Mel Brooks movies( my dad introduced me to his movies) so I just spent the day laughing and remembering my dad.

Honestly, Brenda was the best part of the scary movie franchise

Mel Brooks' parody movies are pretty underrated, and don't rely on dated pop culture references for cheap laughs. Even in 1987, Spaceballs worked, because the Star Wars Franchise was still popular years after its initial release.

The Wayans started all of that shit and when the W*insteins snaked them for Scary Movie 3 it was all downhill from there.

I was going to disagree so hard about Scary Movie 3 until you said it was an exception. I can say that it does have lazy jokes like the Michael Jackson bit, but as a whole, Scary Movie is imo one the greatest pieces of slapstick humor and detailed direction I've ever seen in a parody movie. The shot composition and running gags are phenomenal like the hat gag, George's window gag, and all the little tiny audio sound effects used.

Once they lost the wayans who have done parody movies before scary movie (I'm gonna get you sucka, dont be a menace.) Not to mention "in loving color" which is not parody but kinda is, it all went downhill. Also the first two scary movies were rated R and the rest after that were PG13

Not Another Teen Movie holds a special place in my heart, for reasons Vee says: a satire of a genre instead of references, plus I grew up when those 90s teen movies were popular. Also, the charm of early Chris Evans just works, even back then.

I liked Scary Movie 1-3 and Superhero movie these 4 they put actual effort into those. Everything else sucks

Scary Movie 3 is my favourite parody of all time.

I've always said that the Scary Movie franchise died with part 3. When they went from rated R to PG-13 and the Wayans' brothers stopped being involved, it was no longer the same.

The Day Scary Movie Died was when the studios took it from the Wayans and started churning out ones without their input or writing at all.

I think what worked most about the early Scary Movies was they adapted the plot one or two other existing movies, with jokes added in appropriate places. Then the later “Movie” movies were trying to do everything all at once.

After the success of the first two Scary Movies everyone wanted to make a parody movie and it slowly killed the genre. The last good parody movie I saw was A Haunted House

That's the thing: Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 were produced by the Wayans Bros. Once Harvey Weinstein (yeah, remember THAT guy) screwed them out of their franchise, it literally all went downhill from there.

So basically the Scary Movies are like the Terminator movies on the way the first 3 movies are good or at least okay and the ones after it are a disaster and it should've just stayed as a trilogy. Noice. But I actually like Date Movie mostly for nostalgia, Alyson Hannigan, and Eddie Griffin.

Scary movie is one of my favorite movies. Honestly, I can't stop laughing for most of the movie. Also, so it's clear I only watched scary movie for the first time in 2013 when I was 11. So, it does work even if you aren't old and by far its the best parody series ever.

the "Now I'm gonna fall and break my leg" scene is still just one of my all time fav moments because of how true it was to slashers. Also because seeing Ghostface of all things flinch is funny to see

To be fair, that Harry Potter parody scene was hilarious, especially when Harry tries to use the "invisibility" cloak as he gropes Hermione only for her to tell him to stop, as the cloak is just a regular cloak

You’re 100% right. Don’t be a menace is a perfect example. The entire movie was a poke at the exaggeration of “hood movies” his dad being somehow younger than him, his grandmother being a thug herself, his cousin having grenades as his door bell, & his home being numbered 187 (murder in L.A). They made fun of how a lot of these inner city films that made it seem like the hood was this pathological zoo where people were deciding to make terrible decisions because they live in the hood, instead of the real life problems that cause the hood to be the hood. Parody movies fell of when they decided to start poking fun at pop culture & not critiquing what needed to be critiqued.

The Wayans "A Haunted House" movies was still better than this spoof movies (aside from their Scary Movie though).

I actually really like The Superhero Movie. For the most part, that movie poked fun of and referenced the superhero genre. There was one or two references to non-superhero pop culture (like Tom Cruise going on a rant). But I think The Superhero Movie is a solid installment in this era. Certainly better than the rest of the genre at the time.

So that’s where “RUN B!TCH! RUUUUNNN!” came from.

Even the first scary movie was unneeded. They literally made a satire of a movie that was already a satire. Scream was an excellent written comedy horror, scary movie was literally for those people that didn't even realize scream was a satire in the first place. Because of it, all the jokes are way in your face and it feels more like a circus show than an actual screenplay.

Scary movie 1+2 , "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" and "not another teen movie" are the only good spoof movies.

The first scary movie cam out when I was a teen and yeah, I liked it alot. Didn't care for the second one and since then every parody movie has been really bad.

I remember renting Scary Movie 2 on DVD and aside from enjoying the menus with the parrot, I watched the deleted scenes that would have made the one-hour and fifteen-minute theatrical cut SO much better had most of it just stayed in. So yeah, since then I've tried watching the other movie movies, but like... I couldn't even get past the trailer for a lot of them.

Honestly, for me the only decent one of these movies post the 90’s is probably just the first Scary Movie. I remember seeing the second movie in the cinema and by the time they started referencing The Weakest Link and Nike commercials I was done. Actually having said that, Not Another Teen Movie was pretty good because they actually stuck to the genre and had some legitimately funny _jokes_ in there.

Scream (the film Scary Movie Parodies) was already a parody, parodying the slashers movies of the late early 80s. The Nightmare of on elm street references in Scream where Wes Craven parodying his own film.

I only liked the the first two Scary movies. I hated the rest. I missed good parody movies. They should have taken lessons from Mel Brooks or the guys that did the Naked Gun movies.

Think Scary Movie 3 is the funniest in the series. The Nostalgia Critic said parodies only work if they stick to one genre and like you said the random references to everything don't work.

The problem with the "modern" parody-movies is that they went from parodying genres/movies and instead became unfunny references (kinda like Ready Player One and Space Jam 2).

Pretty much every film except Not Another Teen Movie, Scary 1 and 2.

When Scary Movie 4 came out, it didn't feel like Scary Movie anymore.The first 3 will always be the best in my opinion.

These movies simply ran their course. Doesn’t matter how many talented Wayans brothers you put in them. Hot Shots proved that Deux is the perfect limit.
