George Reeves was born on January 5, 1914, in Woolstock, Iowa. In 1935, he joined the Pasadena Community Playhouse. His first film role was a minor part in Gone with the Wind. Reeves acted in movies and army training films. In 1951, he took the title role on the popular television series The Adventures of Superman. His mysterious 1959 death was considered a suicide, but some speculate murder.
George Reeves was born George Keefer Brewer on January 5, 1914, in the tiny farming community of Woolstock, Iowa. George was the only son of Don and Helen Brewer, who divorced within a few months of his birth. Shortly after, Helen and her newborn son moved to Pasadena, California, where she met and married Frank Bessolo.
After graduating from high school, George enrolled at Pasadena Junior College, where he turned his attention toward music and acting, joining the acappella choir, playing guitar, and performing in school plays. In 1935, at the age of 21, he joined one of the America's most prestigious theaters: the Pasadena Community Playhouse. Over the next four years, he appeared in dozens of playhouse productions.
George received his big break when scouting agents for Hollywood producer David O. Selznick cast him as Stuart Tarleton in the legendary film Gone with the Wind (1939), starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. His part in the film led to a contract with Warner Bros. Studios, who convinced George to adopt the stage name Reeves.
Although Reeves earned acclaim for his performance in Gone with the Wind, he went on to appear in a succession of less than memorable projects, including Tear Gas Squad, Calling All Husbands (both 1940), and Man at Large (1941). However, in 1943, Reeves landed his first starring role in the box office hit So Proudly We Hail!, in which he played a wounded World War II soldier who falls in love with costar Claudette Colbert.
Shortly after the film's release, Reeves put his career on hold to enlist in the army. Joining the Special Theatrical Unit of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he appeared in several training films, including a movie on the dangers of venereal disease. While stationed in New York, a theater director cast Reeves in a small role in the play Winged Victory. After the show's run on Broadway, he toured the country with the production company.
In 1946, at the end of the war, Reeves returned to California. Over the next few years, his only film roles were in low-budget embarrassments like Jungle Goddess and Thunder in the Pines (both released in 1948). Frustrated with dwindling opportunities in film, Reeves directed his efforts toward television work. In 1951, he reluctantly accepted the title role in the TV series The Adventures of Superman. In the fall of 1952, Superman premiered to high ratings and equally impressive critical acclaim. Playing both the crime-fighting hero (and his mild-mannered alter ego Clark Kent), Reeves quickly became a household name with younger viewers. However, as the popularity of the series swelled to a phenomenal level, Reeves became more and more dissatisfied with the direction in which his career was headed.
In 1953, Reeves was given a chance to rejuvenate his flagging film career with a substantial role in From Here to Eternity. However his hopes were crushed when a preview audience laughed and yelled "There's Superman" when Reeves first came on-screen. In the film's final release, the actor appeared only momentarily and without screen credit. Typecasting brought Reeves's career to a grinding halt and From Here to Eternity marked his last major motion picture.
After five successful seasons, Superman was canceled in 1957. In addition to his professional problems, Reeves was burdened by his relationship with longtime lover Toni Mannix, the common-law wife of Eddie Mannix, vice president of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1958, Reeves began a relationship with a young New York socialite, Leonore Lemmon. When he broke off his romance with Mannix, she was enraged, and began to harass the new couple, causing Reeves to file for a restraining order against his former lover.
On June 16, 1959, Reeves was found dead in his bedroom from a gunshot wound to the head. He was 45 years old. The police ruled his death a suicide, but rumors quickly surfaced that Reeves was murdered. Although Lemmon and Mannix were both suspected of killing Reeves, no arrests or convictions were made. His death remains shrouded in mystery.
Reeves is interred at Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.

I am 73 years old and loved watching the Adventures of Superman. I have seen the Superman movies and the other Superman tv shows, but in my opinion, George Reeves is THE one and only Superman. I felt his "flying" abilities and his change from Clark Kent to Superman more believable. In the movies, Superman just stands there and up he goes. With George Reeves, he at least took a few "running" steps and up he went. Many times through a window at the Daily Planet! Thank you for doing this episode on my favorite Superman. This subscriber appreciates the kind way you presented it.

I visited that house a few years ago. The owner happened to be out front with a friend and he was friendly and took time to talk with me. He said, "No there is no ghost" before I could ask. He said his wife was busy inside so he couldn't give me a quick tour. Anyway a friendly guy. He probably would have been open to you setting up a filming date to see inside if you asked him.

Every time I hear about what happened, I can't help but think that it wasn't suicide. Running with the wrong people. He did leave nice childhood memories for many. I would think that anyone involved back then, would also be dead and gone by now. Life is so fragile. Thank you for the video.

Great job Scott ! Always thought this was a murder not a suicide. I think i read once that someone tampered with the brakes on his car, causing a crash not long before he died. The LA police might have been paid off to say suicide and call it a day. Sadly we'll never know. Thank you for paying respects to George Reeves , RIP . cool tribute 💙

Thank you Scott for showing us his resting place. Loved the Superman figure that was there. Thanks again.

Thank you Scott. I will always remember him as Superman and the January 14, 1957 episode of "I Love Lucy" where in fact, he appeared as "Superman," not George Reeves he wanted the kids to think he was the real Superman. An amazing episode Lucy gets stuck on the ledge of the balcony dressed as Superman he appeared at Little Ricky's birthday party. It's so sad to think that he committed suicide and sadly it will never be proven.

Absolutely love your channel man. IF you ever plan on coming to the east coast, to do an episode, specifically CT, whether you'd be interested in doing shows on them or not. Ed and Lorraine Warren's house/museum, The Union Cemetery (Warrens claim it to be the most haunted place in America, which I've had an encounter), Sandy Hook shooting + Adam Lanza's former house location, and the famous wood chipper murder, made even more famous as depicted in the movie Fargo, are all close in proximity, about 15-20mijs from each other. Hit me up, I an show all the locations. Also the Cheshire murders, in Cheshire CT, very sad story is only about 30mins away. Anyways, I love the show and always look forward to them!

Awesome - another great one from you, Scott. Very interesting and so nice to see not only the house in present day, but also the final resting place of Mr. Reeves. I've heard that some people find it odd that the two men who most famously played Superman had not only similar names (Reeves & Reeve) but also died via tragic events. And how odd is it that Ben Affleck not only plays "Superman" in "Hollywoodland" but then turns around to play Batman against Superman years later....? Probably not that odd at all since actors have to have a job and the movie industry these days is so over-saturated with comic book flicks that one has no choice, bla bla bla. Anyway - loved the video. Respectful and interesting as always. Until the next one, take care, my friend.

I'm so glad you did this story on George Reeves. This is the Superman I grew up knowing and because of that he will always be the one and only even though there were others after him. I wasn't even a year old yet when he died but I remember my mom telling me when I got a little older that he killed himself and that made me so sad. Superman was supposed to be indestructible in my childish mind and yet here he was gone by his own hand. Even as a kid it disturbed me. Only when I got much older did I hear different stories about his death. I guess the cause of his death will always be one of those mysteries that will never be solved with certainty but one thing I do know is that he was an incredible Superman in the eyes of a child. RIP forever more George Reeves ❤💐
