guitarblogupdate never heard of him as a teenager, now a forty four year old and nothing has changed although Gilmour is enough to keep most happy then and now. neRlt forgot does anyone care what Noel thinks, really ???

Johnny Marr is just so incredible. To think he wrote the entire Smiths catalog between the ages of 18-23. It blows my mind. The Smiths music is the only music that has resonated with me from my teens until now. Well except for maybe the Pixies. :) What I love about your video is that you even mention "Golden Lights". Nobody ever plays or talks about that one! Not one of my favorites but huge props to you for bringing up and discussing that little obscure gem.

Johnny Marr play's rhythm guitar in the style of lead guitar. And uses acoustic open chords. Hes four guitarists in one. XD Absolute genius.

Tons of guitar players just wanna be a virtuoso style player (AKA shredder)
@christiangasior4244
@christiangasior4244 7 жыл бұрын
Shredding isn't really virtuosic though since most couldn't play any smiths song. It also allows you to show off instead of drawing you into the song

Christian Gasior well people like ingwie are called virtuosos but I think it's more of a genre thing than literal

Look up guitar virtuoso, you will most likely find a list of shredders with maybe SRV and Jimi thrown in the mix. Again, the term is being used loosely and not literally.

My head spun ala The Exorcist, 1972 when I first attempted to learn Girl Afraid. I think this studied approach to his style much more productive than simply diving into the tab.

thank you. On of the definitions of a great guitarist is how unique his sound is. By that definition JM is without a doubt one of the greatest. You listen to his music and there is simply a direct and a unique association to his music. He sounds like nobody but himself. Long live the Smiths.

good, but the most difficult part is that you have to let the arpeggios that you play keep ringing(no muting, this is exactly the contrary of the shred playing. )and play every arpegio with the pick(this make it and string skip arpegio) ,this is exactly the contrary of heavy metal playing.

nightcrawla a Exactly! One of the best parts of Marr guitar is the elongation of the chords. He says this in interviews. It adds to the dreamy atmosphere of his playing.

Thanks for this video Andrew! I have to say I was really drawn in. It was a good length and really got into enough depth so that I feel like my curiosity was satisfied significantly. Johnny Marr has always been one of those guitarists whose style I have not been able to crack...guess I never spent the time and never bought a Smiths guitar book. Haven't been too aware of what else he has done but I always suspected that my appreciation for The Smiths had to do with something more than just Morrisey (although I dig him too). :) As a guitar teacher myself and someone with my own guitar lessons channel I am rarely in the mood to watch guitar videos. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and you helped me to rekindle my student side. Thanks!!

I really enjoyed this video - explaining as you go through the progressions. Great teaching style. 👍 Btw - do you notice the low E string on your Strat getting too close to the edge of the fretboard by the upper frets? Might have been the camera angle, but looked like your high E was "gaining space" by the upper frets while your low E was nearly falling off by the 21st fret. Then again, I could see reason of doing this on purpose if you don't play the low E high up the fretboard. Probably just the camera angle. Cool Strat.

Great lesson, thanks. I am enough of a Johnny Marr fan to own his signature Jaguar (which is great btw). Maybe we all have the "riff from hell" that just won't rest under our fingers? Mine is that figure from "What Difference Does It Make?" It's sorta simple enough, but after weeks and weeks and weeks I still can't keep it going for a full verse - let alone the whole tune - without screwing it up entirely. You may have heard my primal screams of "Damn you, Maaaaaaaarrrrrrrr!" echoing through space.
@AngusMcToon
@AngusMcToon 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. So you essentially hybrid pick it? I've just been alternate picking, but all plectrum. Anyway, like I said, it's one of my albatross riffs. JM is indeed one of those great players who doesn't show off but is constantly innovating - so many little nuances of time and cool chord voicings. George Harrison sort of comes to mind.

Johnny is a great guitarist. These are his influences Marr's jangly guitar-playing was influenced by Neil Young's work with Crazy Horse George Harrison (with the Beatles - cause after the beatles he wasnt so good ha) and James Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders.

Probably good for beginners, but this idea of deifying Johnny Marr is just silly! He did the Smiths stuff fine, but like anyone else would have done playing john Denver songs in a bar.Again, nothing against the guy, and that guy with the daffodil is not a great singer either. So nothing to aspire to. Having said that, your lessons are great for relative beginners, something I never had when I was a lad, so thanks!
