In 1989, Dee Dee Ramone left the Ramones and crowned himself the king of hip-hop using the name Dee Dee King. We remembered rock and roll radio, but I'd like to forget this album
I take my shot at a Trainwreckords-esque video in this episode...

Funky Man is the music that my alarm plays every weekday morning. Alarm clock ringing, its time to get up. Its time to do that funky strut.

Dee Dee king standing in the spotlight was different like every band he made after Ramones and I really like it ... ❤

Glad to see this sentiment I agree, no irony I like that this album exists, a complicated person with a checkered past and future being completely himself and making something with a child like sense of wonder It is genuinely so funny too though and taking it with a grain of salt especially those interview clips have me rolling, gotta have a sense of humor about it Love the Ramones but we all also know Johnny had a few other choice words in his head at the time other than "Oh, that Dee Dee!" 🤣

Dee Dee Ramones rapping reminds me of how Tim Robinson sings in the sketch where he plays in a band and tries to sing a song about bones.

It’s a cool record. It’s a rap influenced pop punk record. And it’s outsider music.

It absolutely is outsider music. Being outside is a relative measure.

As bad as this record is, it still makes me happy knowing that it was exactly the record Dee Dee wanted to make. After years of struggle as a Ramone, he was happy again.

I first heard funky man on MySpace back in like 2006? Loved it , downloaded it from limewire Played it for my band mates once after a drive back from a show and they all thought it was terrible… the drummer even said turn this off

I do think this review is a bit harsh on DeeDee, in some aspects there are clear mistakes about the Ramones and some ignorance about DeeDee s live that any real Ramones would cringe about. DeeDee wrote some of the best punk lyrics of all time and he was incredibly talented, but part of his talent came from his curiosity and will to try something new. If he was alive he would be doing techno music or so

Don't know if this is true or not, but supposedly the record label refused to give the album a normal release to record stores and destroyed a lot of copies. But at one point, I found a mint copy of it in a pawn shop for $2 and resold it on Ebay for $40 (around 2003 or so). I did give it a listen and although I had been warned it was bad, my jaw still dropped at how horrible it really is.

I’m pretty sure that Joey was back up vocals. Even his solo album was essentially a Ramones album. Also he was the Ramones most prolific song writer from the beginning.

Actually I liked this record. It's one of those "It's so bad that it's actually good" kind of records. But it's even MORE than that. So good that even The Ramones covered The Crusher. Also Too Much To Drink, and I Want What I Want When I Want It are actually good songs. OK, admittedly Dee Dee's "Rapping" leaves a bit to be desired if you're a fan of Rap, but it's still fun to listen to. And, hey, he even got Debbie harry, and members of The Plasmatics to be on it. This album really DOES work on so many levels. I totally understand the hate and negative criticism for this album, but, I think upon closer inspection, and with an open mind people might actually LIKE this album on many levels. (However, it DOES help to have a sense of humor when listening to it for the first two or three times)

Standing in the Spotlight is a brilliant album. The first song is horrible; the outstanding Funkyman should have been there instead. It would have been a great opener. I'm glad to be a person capable of appreciating the Ramones, Genesis, Yes, After Crying, the Pet Shop Boys and Standing in the Spotlight. I suppose only people with an exquisite musical taste can listen to Standing in the Spotlight and enjoy it.

Ever hear of Bob Vylan from the UK? Dude rules, heavily punk influenced rap. The song "Rock n Roll" turns into a straight up hardcore song at the end. Also Madball, Biohazard, Skarhead, 25 ta life, Fury of Five etc all the nyhc thug core is a marriage of punk and rap.

Sugar Ray NüMetal? DUUUDDEEE??? no! Korn was and is the template for Numetal. Sugar ray were punkish on a couple songs but ended up MAINLY a pop band. The Nümetal title is slapped on ANYTHING now! It's just mislabeling.

that part was def not to be taken seriously, it was more of a reference to the fact that in the nu metal wiki sugar ray is mentioned twice. They also predated Korn starting in the 80s, which I found hilarious

Nothing DeeDee Ramone did was a disaster. Period. On an unrelated note, relying heavily on anthony fantano to prove your point, gives you zero credibility especially in punk rock. Even in 2023 when punks been hijacked by nerf-people
