The “What the…” album is horrible lol it’s the only BF release I do not own. Such a shame as Ron is a great singer

The “Flag” reunion project was amazing. The Black Flag band that was around at the same time was not that good. I think the singer is a pro skater. I regret not seeing “Flag” with Keith Morris singing!!

Standing in the Spotlight is a brilliant album. The first song is horrible; the outstanding Funkyman should have been there instead. It would have been a great opener. I'm glad to be a person capable of appreciating the Ramones, Genesis, Yes, After Crying, the Pet Shop Boys and Standing in the Spotlight. I suppose only people with an exquisite musical taste can listen to Standing in the Spotlight and enjoy it.

As bad as this record is, it still makes me happy knowing that it was exactly the record Dee Dee wanted to make. After years of struggle as a Ramone, he was happy again.

Great vid. I saw the reformed Black Flag at their Sydney show in 2013 and the whole thing had a weird, unpleasant vibe to it. Ironically with Ron singing they sounded great but the bad 'only after the $' vibe soured everything

Black Flag was great. In the beginning. Keith/Ron/Dez shows were electric. When Henry joined, it was never the same. If you only saw Black Flag after the early to mid 80’s, you saw crap. Better bands took over the SoCal scene at that point. And this modern-day flag is a total f’ing joke. They all suck.

this is one of the reasons i love living in california... i got to see FLAG at the GV3O show by pure luck. a friend couldnt go, gave me the tix and 20 minutes later as i was looking for a ride... another friend called me freaking out seeing on facebook about flag playing at the GV30. we drove down, got in and the greatest 8 minutes of my punk life happened, then again later at PRB... but thats a different story

I might have been able to accept Mike V. as the vocalist of a later-day version of Black Flag. I mean, why not? But he disqualified himself permanently with his stunt in Australia, "firing" Ron Reyes onstage in the middle of a live show. There is no previous singer of Black Flag who would have EVER done something like that to another singer from Black Flag. There is too much mutual respect. It's a brotherhood, and Mike V. will never be part of that. He's the singer in a Black Flag cover band.

Glad to see this sentiment I agree, no irony I like that this album exists, a complicated person with a checkered past and future being completely himself and making something with a child like sense of wonder It is genuinely so funny too though and taking it with a grain of salt especially those interview clips have me rolling, gotta have a sense of humor about it Love the Ramones but we all also know Johnny had a few other choice words in his head at the time other than "Oh, that Dee Dee!" 🤣

7:21 Mystery Tour was Capital records adding weird ass clouds and fucking track listing on the front. The Beatles original incarnation is JUST that center bit, which I actually think is pretty cool. It was also originally just and EP, which I feel gets more passes at whatever artwork they want to do, cause, fuck it, it's an EP. Here's the wiki page that shows both covers. The one without Capital Records treatment is actually really cool (if you can divorce yourself from what we all know it as now... use your imagination and try and completely forget about how you know it) : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Mystery_Tour

Rare opinion here: the music on What The is actually pretty great. It's got a horrendously bad cover and a weird mix - the drums and to a lesser degree vocals drowned out by Greg's guitar and bass. But there's worse drum mixes on loads of classic punk albums. The guitars and bass are vicious and Ron's vocals suit them well. I suspect if the album had a Raymond Pettibone cover, it would be widely acclaimed as a challenging return to form. Too bad Greg seems to have screwed and alienated so many collaborators in Black Flag and SST 'cause he's a ground-breaking genius whose positive influence on punk and DIY rock can't really be overstated.

I hate it bc Ginn’s playing is one of if not my biggest inspiration for guitar (Him and Paul Leary) but he’s such an insufferable fucking prick. He’s effectively the biggest villain in the life of any Black Flag fan and his inability to self criticize and grow the fuck up is fucking enraging. It takes zero effort to be a decent human being. Grow up, make peace and get in the fucking van.

I do think this review is a bit harsh on DeeDee, in some aspects there are clear mistakes about the Ramones and some ignorance about DeeDee s live that any real Ramones would cringe about. DeeDee wrote some of the best punk lyrics of all time and he was incredibly talented, but part of his talent came from his curiosity and will to try something new. If he was alive he would be doing techno music or so

I’m pretty sure that Joey was back up vocals. Even his solo album was essentially a Ramones album. Also he was the Ramones most prolific song writer from the beginning.

Sugar Ray NüMetal? DUUUDDEEE??? no! Korn was and is the template for Numetal. Sugar ray were punkish on a couple songs but ended up MAINLY a pop band. The Nümetal title is slapped on ANYTHING now! It's just mislabeling.

that part was def not to be taken seriously, it was more of a reference to the fact that in the nu metal wiki sugar ray is mentioned twice. They also predated Korn starting in the 80s, which I found hilarious

Greg once decided to storm down the hallway of the SST house and just steal Raymond's artwork from his room, said "These are mine," and kicked him out. There's a great video somewhere that opens with Pettibon painting the bars on a wall in his studio and saying, "My name is Raymond Pettibon and I came up with this fucking thing."

I love Black Flag, they changed my life back in '85 when I first heard them (then they broke up😂). I've seen each tour since the restart and the 2013 gig was one of the weirdest shows I've ever seen. I think Reyes was out a few days later. I will say, as a noise rocker, there was something perverse about it that I really enjoyed. The latest iterations have been great, provides you like Greg's corroded guitar style (at 70, he really doesn't care if he just makes some noise on e and a while). That said, Greg is a creep who could have been one of the heroes of the movement but he ruined it. (Side note: neither of those kids in the rhythm section are still with the band, their drummer on these 2023/24 My War gigs may be the best they've had since Stevenson)
