Hi Mark. Been playing 12-strings since I was 14 - I'm 73 now! I've only got two - it looks like you've got two too - DOZEN! I have a Maton that I've had for 50 years that Tommy Emmanuel says sounds superb, and a 1982 Guild D212 like Tom Petty played on Free Fallin'. One thing that surprises me is that you only have a Guild Starfire in your collection! Guild 12's are THE definitive 12-strings that everyone else aspires to - many of the other makes sound weak compared to them. As for favorite 12-string songs, any of Gordon Lightfoot's music where he was playing his 12-string is incredible - he had an unbelievable rhythm that few others could achieve, especially on songs like Canadian Railroad Trilogy! And I'm sure you've seen John Butler's home studio version of Ocean - THAT'S mindblowing! Great selection though, and great playing!

Hey Mark - that was great. I'd add: Pins and Needles/Needles and Pins, California Girls, Feel A Whole Lot Better (but you did add great Byrd songs. Nice job on 8 Miles High), Bells of Rhymney, and waaay too many Kottke stuff, and one of my favorite Beatle songs - You Can't Do That!
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 6 ай бұрын
You Can't Do That and Polythene Pam both made my top 75 as did Seeger's version of the Bells of Rhymney. Needles and Pins was on my original list of about 110. California Girls wasn't on the list. California Girls and Help Me Rhonda and Hurricane are all tough to rank. All have a 12 string but would they really be considered 12 string songs enough to crack the top 50. Close but not quite in my opinion. Thanks for sharing yours. It's exactly as correct as mine! :). Take care and enjoy your weekend. Mark

"Starship Trooper" and "And You And I" are inspired choices! I think that Steve Howe's 12-string work is some of the warmest ever recorded. I think that I would add some Genesis to the list though. They were known for their "twin 12-string" concept at one time. Rutherford and Anthony Phillips used to play together in arrangements that almost sounded like a harpsichord. That was eventually revisited on "Trick Of The Tail" after Peter Gabriel left. "Ripples" and "Entangled" are amazing.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 6 ай бұрын
The problem with putting a Genesis tune on a countdown like this is that the handful of songs that I could actually take a 15 second segment of and have it sound great are not really their best songs. The classics don't really have a singular part per se, at least not the ones I consider classics.
@gdkopinionator4356
@gdkopinionator4356 6 ай бұрын
@@8MinuteAxe That makes sense. Those two tracks that I mentioned are quite beautiful, but there is no standout performance of 12 string. It's just a matter of how beautifully it is assimilated into those pieces. A piece like "Blood on the Rooftops", however has a featured guitar part - but it's classical not 12-string. Unlike a lot of progressive organizations, Genesis seemed to really frown upon overt displays of virtuosity.

If it was purely historical, A Hard Day's Night would be near the top if not the top. Walk Right In, the Seekers, Pete Seeger, Fred Gerlach, et all. The Beatles are by far my favorite band but the rest of that stuff is not my wheelhouse. After the Beatles comes Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, maybe Zep, the Band, Van Morrison, Rush. I'm a little all over but the early sixties folk isn't really my cup of tea. I like Freewheelin because the songs are great. Email me when you have time. I need to send you an article. Great video! Awesome choice of songs, many of them my favourites. Suite Madame Blue is one of the songs that drove me to the 12-string guitar, followed by Give a Little Bit. But any of your choices are great tunes to play on 12-strings! Interesing...you put Starship Trooper, which was inspried by the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, a book about fighting an interstellar war with only slower than light ships that are subject the effects of time dilation due to travelling at near reletivistic speeds between the stars. It is followed by another science fiction oriented song, '39 by Queen. It is another song is also about the effects of time dilation from travelling closer to the speed of light. Interestingly it seems that it is a popular subject for rock musicians. Off the top of my head, I can name at least a three other songs about the same subject...Spirit of the Age by Hawkwind, Aldebaran by the Canadian band FM, and interstingly, a song by Enya about the same subject with the same title as the FM song, Aldebaran.

What a great list! There were a few that I have always loved but either didn't realize (or had forgotten) were 12-strings, so it was also educational. Well chosen and well done, Mark!

Okay, that was great, being a fan of the 12 string and owning 4 myself, but in your words, there was one “foolish omission”: Emerson Lake and Palmer’s “Still You Turn Me Own”. But I must say, what originally got me turned onto the 12 was indeed the sound of the Byrds. But I was manufactured in 1957 so quite a bit of that stuff got incorporated into my DNA growing up in the 60s and early 70s. Check out Greg Lake’s solo video playing that tune.

I really appreciate it Rodney. When I first started making 12 string videos.I came up with about 45 songs.Now I've got so many songs to choose from.I had to cut 25 classics. lots of great songs on the 12 string. Again. Thanks so much for the kind words and support. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Take care and be well. MARK

Cool List Mark. I missed this live. forgot about the hour time difference. Remember everyone he included how much he liked a song. I think I don't know maybe 5 or so you played .Did you play them in order of your of Favorvite songs personally? Mr. Tambourine man # 1 or was it how important the 12 string part stood out in the song., I found it very clever you played Georges Bass part on ( I've Just seen a Face ) A rare Beatle song with no actual Bass Guitar. Great job Mark and Happy New Year to you and your subscribers

Well, now you're obviously gonna hafta do a top 1000 in this category. Good luck! The irony of this sort of list is that the more you include, the more songs seem to be missing. As soon as _Wild Horses_ came up, I immediately thought of _Lady Jane, As Tears Go By,_ and _Playing with Fire._ And when you started _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ I was anticipating _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ (which has a very striking, yet simple, 12-string part). Or _Mrs. Robinson,_ or _Fakin' It._ And the list goes on. . . I think that all this means is, it's a really good list, Mark. Thanks for dredging up so many wonderful memories. Fred

Fade to Black made the original cut but Hetfield and Hammett cannot not agree as to whether or not a 12-string was used on the original recording. Anytime I put something up that's not a 12 on the original, I get pounced on. Same with Pleasant Valley Sunday. Mike used three 6 strings on the original even though he ALWAYS used a 12 live. OH CRAP. Disregard stu. My apologies. Yeah, Fade to Blue is a deep cut. Somebody else mentioned it when I asked for new music with a 12-string. If I recall correctly, there's no riff, right? Just a nice fat 12 with good high end strumming along? I am a big fan of Jeff Carlisi. Such a cool guy. I know he's not on that album but I figured I'd mention it. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Thanks so much for adding a gem. Mark

Well, the only disagreement I have is with the premise, "the rock and roll era is over." The music industry has been hijacked by assholes, and I use the term deliberately. All they produce is waste! "Reality" shows, promoters, executives, etc. have choked off the avenues of profit for rock musicians in order to put the cash in their own pockets. When I was a kid in the fifties, there were countless times I heard, "Rock and roll is a flash in the pan!" " It will never last! " , ad nauseum! Well, it was good; it was exciting; it was rebellious; and, at it's best, it pushed society to be better. It is still all those things! Like folk, and the blues, rock is not going away, whatever the capitalist tastemakers try to tell us! Rock fills a need in the human soul! It will evolve over time. But, like democracy, it ain't goin' away!

Hey Mark. Other than Maggie May that has a 6 12 and a Mandolin (the 12 string pedals on the D in the recording so I am playing two extra notes thst are actually played by the doubled 6 and mandolin.Which other songs do you think don't have a 12 string? Free Fallin and Wild horses use a six and a Nashville so I took some liberty there. Pleasant Valley Sunday is three 6 string guitars but Mike always used the falcon 12 on tour. Same thing with many of the Smiths songs. Johnny played a lot of 12 live and has never been open about what he used to record some of the songs on the first two records. I've been researching 12 string stuff for years but I've been wrong before. Let me know your thoughts. I appreciate you checking out the video. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark

Mark, this was a righteous list: besides the obvious ones, you didn’t forget to included stuff from Leo Kottke [how could any 12-string list possibly omit him?], the Animals, Question, America, If I needed someone, Walk Right In, 8 miles high. some of the younger crowd might not even know some of these songs, but the influence they had in their time was tremendous, so you gave them their proper place. The only omission I would mention would be As Tears Go By.

Great collection of 12's! You may also like to try a Guild F-412, Gibson J-185-12, a Martin D12-35 and a Mossman 12. For electrics, Ovation made a great solid body 12 with two onboard 9v batteries to power an on-board preamp; and on the budget side, Danelectro makes a great 12 with lipstick pickups!
