The dark romance subculture is something that is quite popular and it can be quite naughty…So what is dark romance Dark romance is a sub-genre of fiction that explores themes of love, desire, and power in morally ambiguous or taboo settings. It is a contentious and divisive genre, with some readers finding it deeply empowering and others finding it problematic. Dark romance is very common in books and even movies!
let’s explore The desire and appeal of the girl who can fix the broken man

I think it's simply that 'dark' romance is more exciting, most people wouldn't want to be in that specific type of relationship but find the dark and sometimes rather intense dramatic relationship more interesting than one of mere everyday happenings.

Exactly! I couldn’t agree more I think that people don’t want to be in this type of relationship but when reading or watching it can be more unpredictable and like you said interesting! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the topic ☺️

these types of stories are quite fascinating as the characters involved are examples of the Jungian archetypes gone wrong. The men instead of being Kings in their fullness are Tyrants, and instead of being Warriors they are bullies, and that is if they are even men archetypes and not boy archetypes. The girls are similarly placed, they fail to achieve the fullness of the archetype of woman, and often are stuck in the realm of girl. But the worst thing about them is that these books almost always establish these characters as the ideal to pursue, rather than as a warning of what not to pursue or as examples of how to overcome the failings.

exactly! wow I couldn't of said it better myself! what you should take away from these stories is not the thrill but the sadness and the constant feeling of failure and loneliness. Thank you so much for your comments on the topic you had some great points! :)

I think the American poet Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta summarizes the entire genre in her famous lines "Russian roulette is not the same without a gun And, baby, when it's love, if it's not rough, it isn't fun"

wow, it couldn't be described in a better way, such a creative and deep line it explains so much but still leaves you with the sense of uncertainty and thrill exactly like the genre! Thank you for sharing :)

I find it interesting, that impulse of falling for the broken, to try to fix it, both this archetype and the gender inverse "I can fix her" version. On the other hand, I think your bunny could probably use some more cuddles.

I have a question. How do males and females bond with each other? I don't see how men and women can bond (especially romantically) with each other. Men and women think very differently from each other. It seems like it's impossible for men and women to emotionally connect with each other. Women do emotionally connect with other women, better than men do. Women can build incredible friendships and become very close to each other in a way men can't bond, and science shows that women can bond very well with each other. Generally, women are even more social than men are. After something bad happens, a woman quickly rushes to talk to all of her female friends to get support, whereas a man can isolate himself and grief alone.

the author Ottessa Moshfegh once said “Art is not media…We need novels that live in an amoral universe…We need characters in novels to be free to range into the dark and wrong. How else will we understand ourselves?” To me, dark romance is just a way of exploring a fantasy in a controlled, make believe environment. It’s completely separate from reality and i don’t need it to spoon feed me morals or healthy relationship advice. I think that’s why when people talk about “impressionable readers” (i agree of course that dark romance is not for everyone) i can’t help but wonder, do you think someone trapped in an abusive relationship is trapped because they read Twilight and strive to have the relationship Bella and Edward do? no, that’s silly. If dark romance makes you uncomfortable because you think “i would never be into this in real life” it doesn’t mean people who are into dark romance are into it in real life…the same with mystery/thriller/horror novels - someone who reads those isn’t automatically into murder irl. those are just my two cents. i really enjoyed this video! i think conversations like these are important to have.
@AbbieRee

You made some excellent points. I love how you said “if someone is into mystery/thriller and horror doesn’t make them want to do it irl” that’s such a good example! I do definitely think it’s such an interesting topic to talk about it’s interesting how through books it can be perceived differently than through films ! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic I’m so glad you enjoyed ☺️

I think it's fundamentally because of loyalty. The Beast figure is always completely loyal to the girl. You've got lasting love. And that's hard to find these days in an age of Tinder and easy hookups. Edward Cullen may stalk her, but you know he's not going to sleep with her, takes nudes, and share them online. He's totally loyal. Toxic here means loyal, and healthy means disloyal or at least uncertainty about his loyalty. If healthy means he might leave tomorrow, I understand why toxic is more alluring.

I've been watching Vampire Diaries with my big sister for the first time this year and she's been pointing out some interesting feedback on the character of Damon and his relationship with Elena. She says that what makes Damon such an impactful character is that for all of his darkness, he is still a very vulnerable and sensible man with a strong sense of loyalty and respect to others even if he hides it behind seemingly sarcastic replies to the other characters. A perfect example to that is his interactions with Bonnie, whom he insults often in a lavish way that in truth is more complimentary than anything. His relationship with Elena is compelling because it hinges not only around their intense attraction to one another but due to a strong understanding of who the other is and what the other needs. The fact that they are always fighting might seem toxic at times (and Damon himself broke the fourth wall once by saying so), but it also serves to motivate them to stay on their toes. They never take one another for granted, forcing them always to respect each other and address their problems. Truth be told, it's been a fun (and enlightening) ride watching this show with Sister, similar to when we read the Twilight books many years ago. If men and women were to spend more time listening and learning from one another instead of judging and punishing each other the world would be a better place to live in, and the best thing about coexisting and learning from the other is that it's really not as hard as people fear.

My favourite comment ever ! I’m not joking when I say that I had a tvd fan account for 3years 😆 so I know exactly what you are talking about, I would love to make a video on the show! I definitely agree with you the broken character can be “toxic” but in some circumstances its not what they are intending. It may be the only way they know how to cope with the situation *not that it’s a good thing* but with time people develop and with Damon he is a completely different character by the end of the series and that’s how a good well developed character is supposed to be played! Thank you so much for your comment ☺️

I think you're right. Good stories need conflict and tension, but too many of these stories seem to be just condoning abusive behaviour. Also, too many of the characters are the same ones every time. To each her own though.

This says it came out 4 days ago but I just got the notification 3 minutes ago. my fiance is definitely the leader and the protector but he's always sweet to me , he makes me smile every day , he always makes me feel pretty and in almost 4 years now he's never even raised his voice to me. But outside he's definitely I don't want to say different but he doesn't take any shit and will definitely fight especially when it comes to the people he loves. He's not broken though really but I guess having someone who is the beast to the rest of the world but always sweet to me is definitely something I find attractive. I don't know if that's dark romance or I'm just a weirdo.

how is anna karenina a dark romance ( as you describe that genre) ? i don't remember the details of the anna- vronsky relationship as presented in the very stylized movie adaptation you clip from ( though i watched it) but i am very familiar with book and remember other adaptations. don't fit imo.
@AbbieRee
@AbbieRee 7 ай бұрын
I thought that too about Anna karenina! when I first saw it listed as a film that is a "dark romance" I was unsure but I think its because of the way their romance evolves and how they have to deal with cheating, banishment and death their relationship doesn't fit the mold of some dark romances but I think because there is so many sub-genres within dark romance that they may fall under one. :) Just wondering do you have any favourite romance films? I wouldn't use the word "fix" bc a person isn't an ikea table, I'd rather substitute it with the word "influence". We all need a positive influence from the people we love and care for to make the change within ourselves and fix what's been broken in us

It is well known in psychological literature that female sexuality and sexual interest is linked to aggression, violence and dark triad personality types. Unfortunately it is tethered to female psychology and the "romantic" sub-genre is definitely toxic, but popular is popular. Women like it, their sexuality and psychology relating to what is attractive to them runs counter to the ideological narratives pushed by the same women. As a man that has read many of these types of books, men would be shocked by the dark side of female sexuality. There isn't a male counterpart where a huge swathe of men are excited by a simulacrum of SA/grape. Would I recommend any? All men should read the most popular ones so they can avoid the women enthralled by them.

it's just an escape fantasy. Yes, it's toxic but lots of people don't have healthy fantasies. Though curious that whenever toxic relationships are in fiction, they're almost always far more romanticised and healthier than real life counterparts--because too accurate a depiction would break the escapism of the fantasy.

Dark Romance has always been that genre that I could never get into. Just the idea of two people being toxic to each other is a dreadful thought, and to sit through an entire story of it doesn't seem to be an appealing sunday afternoon to spend. The 'I can fix him/her' trope doubly so as it reeks of savior complex, which can be compelling if written right, but oftentimes falls flat.
@AbbieRee
@AbbieRee 7 ай бұрын
Exactly I’m in the same boat I’ve never been able to get into it because like you I can’t understand why the “toxic love” is appealing. And it can be compelling and thrilling but if it’s not written right it can be very negative and triggering ! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts ☺️

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death. I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse. Also, you are more likely to be much more closer to someone who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a romantic partner or spouse. People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse.
