CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Andy (Anne Hathaway) watches as the Runway Magazine office turns upside down when it is announced that Miranda (Meryl Streep) is on her way.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who stumbles into the hectic worlds of high fashion and publishing comes to the big screen in this comedy. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman from the Midwest who has just graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy has applied for a job at "Runway," America's most prestigious fashion journal; though Andy has little to no interest in the garment trade, they are one of the only magazines in New York with a job opening -- second assistant to editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). As Andy quickly learns, Miranda is a diva with plenty of power within the magazine business and she isn't afraid to use it, and though Andy lands the job (primarily by being in the right place at the right time), she soon learns that working for Miranda could test the patience of a saint thanks to her endless demands and refusal to acknowledge the end of a work day. Andy struggles to hold on to the job and her sanity, knowing that a recommendation from Miranda can open nearly any door at any magazine, but can she handle the pressure without losing her mind along the way? The Devil Wears Prada also stars Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Adrian Grenier.

I once worked for a Miranda-type who expected me to be on call 24/7 even though my contract states that my working hours are 9-6 (and my boss was a man, so instead of getting told off with a velvety-sounding monologue, I actually got yelled at). I lasted 3.5 months (of course I could've quit but they have a sweet severance package so I stuck it out till they decided to let me go). I watched this when I was a kid and like you, I was disappointed that Andy left her job. But now I get it. Go Andy!

The way everyone gets out of Mirandas path, the security guard who opens the side gate without even asking for an id, the girl who stepped out of the elevator and said "sorry Miranda," part of me doesn't want to be feared like that but the other part wants that much power OH SO BADLY.
@CarissaConti
@CarissaConti 5 жыл бұрын
It's false power though. All those people feared her because of what she could take away from them. (jobs, money, a future career in the fashion industry.) If she didn't have something to lord over their head then she'd have no power. Thus, nobody would be opening gates, giving up elevators, or running around like a chicken with their head cut off for her. What you're really after is *respect.* And the best respect is pure respect - when you don't have something you can lord over anybody, yet, people still treat you well regardless, merely because you have truly earned it in some way. It sucks when random people out in the world treat us in a shitty way for no reason, merely because they can (I actually had that happen today in fact) as it reminds us that um, yeah....we're nobody, and we have no power, and we're not going to just be able to command automatic respect from every body we cross paths with. So I get what you're coming from. But I also understand that Miranda's power (or rather, Anna Wintour's power ;) ) is false power.
@TM-lp9jv
@TM-lp9jv 5 жыл бұрын
Justin Akioka You can have that “power” without having to be like that all the time. Sometimes you have to be to put someone back in line. Lol. Being respected is more fun than being feared in my opinion. If you can gain everyone’s respect who works around you, they’ll do what they can to protect you and back you up. But if they hate you and fear you, if there’s an opportunity to get rid of you, they’ll jump ship to get rid of you.
@dbstewart86
@dbstewart86 5 жыл бұрын
@@TM-lp9jv Exactly. That's a plot point later in the movie as higher ups in her company scheme to get rid of her and she ends up sacrificing someone's career to save herself, setting the stage for another disgruntled employee shortly down the road. When you have respect, people do what you ask because they know it's in the best interest of the whole, nurturing teamwork and you go out on your own terms; when you have fear, people do what you ask because they're worried about themselves, nurturing selfishness and deception, and you often go out as soon as a replacement can be found, and sometimes before.

@@EyeLean5280 It happened to Caligula because he was lazy, sloppy, very corrupt and not very disciplined. The soldiers killed Caligula because they hated how irresponsible he was. They didn't respect him. Miranda was at the top of her game and inspired awe in everyone because she was really, REALLY good at what she did. If they respect you and they fear you--that's the best combination, and Miranda had that. If they fear you only, then the hatred will eventually get you overthrown or killed. LOL.

How do you think Italian fashion became less relevant over time? Anna Wintour doesn't like Italian designers (to the point that she asked to reduce the Milan fashion week) and she features American and French designers more. That's also why the only designer who accepted to be in the movie was Valentino.

@@BeautifulDirtyRich93 she's kinda not wrong, Italian fashion is rarely practical AND beautiful at the same time, and I think there's a new wave of wanting beautiful clothing AND practicality . though I do still think some Italian designers still deserve accolades and praise.

Exactly! Meryl Streep said that, in her experience, people with a lot of power don't need to raise their voices; just a lift of an eyebrow can cause someone a panic attack. That's what she took as inspiration for the role.
