You understand the 'shy and awkward' thing here is a tongue-in-cheek don't you? Americans aren't very good at that sort of humour, but it's part of New Zealand's English heritage, and also in Australia. Here he's deliberately overdoing an 'aww shucks' sort of guy... a little bit like the character that Jimmy (James) Stewart used to adopt during the 1930s-1950s.

@@choccymilkfrankp18732:19 Yeah nah, he's playing awkward, Some Kiwi's execute dry comedy effortlessly. He's a legend. Self-deprecating humour is pretty common here, as a lot of us don't like to be seen as arrogant or cocky. He ramps up the awkward, dry humour because that's why people keep watching him; (think - Flight of The Conchords). He's the kind of guy that you'd feel privileged having a beer or a barbeque with 👍 He and his family seem like genuine fun people in my opinion. We need more genuine these days right. Don't take things too seriously my friend; exposure to different cultures is illuminating. Have an awesome day.

The reason Americans are so loud goes pretty deep, but I will try and make this very simple and short. Most Americans don't travel much. It's expensive. Unlike NZ and other countries where you are allowed a month off work, paid for by your government, Americans must save up money and on average, can take a week off, per year. What happens is, the typical American is isolated to the States and considers everything outside of it a "novelty", almost like a amusement park. We are also raised with the idea of America representing true "freedom". With this mentality, they don't take where they are visiting that serious and feel as if the world revolves around them, for lack of a better term. Not all of us are that way, but most are. Hope this helps!

It's not an 'ego' thing; it's a practical thing. The US is so large and diverse, one can travel within her boarders and still experience a wide variety of different cultural-environments-- and they can do so at a fraction of what it would cost to travel overseas. I mean, just consider the differences between New England, the Deep South; the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest. Americans have all this diversity their own back yard. And they can enjoy it all without the need for huge flight times, passports, language barriers, and cultural shocks. Traveling in-country is the smarter move for anyone whose not filthy rich because vacationing overseas, as wonderful as it is... is NOT a good investment. You can spend like $4,000 in a week and really have nothing to show for it in the end but some pictures on your cellphone. Plus, most people end up doing exactly what they could have done vacationing domestically-- go out to eat, look at some nature, grab a cup of coffee, or go to a club. I think Americans prudently place a higher emphasis on adult things like saving money and growing their net-worth rather than throwing caution to the wind to have a good time now. In essence they make wiser decisions with their money.

Tipping is a perfect example of a country founded on hard conservatism and industry rights over workers rights. There are not labour laws ensuring workers are payed enough to live off and so they require tips to live. Of course, by no means is New Zealand perfect, but at least in regards to paying workers I think we have better legislation. So probably the reason tips freak us out is because they are indicative of the people who are barely being paid by their employers. That said, I've been to America recently and pretty much everyone seemed to be lovely people and maybe we're all just being scared of a different culture.

Tipping is a good thing. Here's an example. A friend of mine waits tables. She brings home (on average) almost $1,000 a week in tips. If some people who want wages raised had their way, she'd get no tips and her pay would be about $380 *before taxes*. That's not very much money. She'd probably need a 2nd job or have to quit hers to try to find one that paid much more (if it were possible for her to get a job that paid that much).

To say "hi" we say "how are you?" but we don't really care and that freaks the rest of the world out. "Howdy" is very niche. The first thing you called an American trailer is more often called a camper (or an RV if it drives itself), and the one you called a New Zealand trailer is also a trailer in America (we do in fact haul/tow things like hay, animals, equipment, boats, food, etc) We do sometimes have two buttons on our public toilets.

True story: My Mom and I visited New Zealand a few years ago (we are from Montana) and on our first day there, we went to 2 or 3 different stores in Queenstown looking for a cooler. At every store we had to explain what it was and it seemed like no one knew what we were talking about. Finally at the last store, the clerk was like "oh, you mean a chilly bin" and we just kind of stood there like 🤷‍♀️ So that's been an inside joke between us now back in the States, we'll just go around calling coolers "chilly bins." Thanks for this video, I wish I had seen it before my trip.😂

American clarification on trailers: Caravan = mobile home or trailer Trailer = trailer If you live in a neighborhood of mobile homes you could call it a trailer park, but the individual units are usually referred to as mobile homes and not just “trailer/trailer home”. Also these are not to be confused with RV’s/campers. This concludes my TedTalk.

NZ to US equivalency Caravan = Camper, travel trailer, camper trailer, RV (recreational vehicle) Trailer = trailer, utility trailer, work trailer, a 5x8 trailer, etc. In the US, A trailer could refer to any of the words in both categories above if it is moved by being towed behind a vehicle, including semi-permanent mobile homes. In the US, the word caravan would usually mean a group of vehicles traveling together single file.

Our trailer is the same as your trailer. We tow stuff. We don't call your caravan a trailer, we call it a camper, for camping. 😀

Travel trailer is the US name for the NZ caravan (many call them simply trailer for short); RV is the one that's a mobile home

I'm from Wisconsin. I have heard of trailer parks and trailers and stuff. But mainly we call them campers.

My American cousin: “your accent sounds weird” Me, a kiwi: “I don’t have an accent” My cousin: “yes you do. I’m the one that doesn’t have an accent” Me: “sorry pal but in NZ, you have an accent” (I think pukekos are evil. She thinks they are cute. This causes many arguments)

He's **bang-on** about tipping! I (and a lot of others in NZ) find it complicated and weird - just as he described! I will say though that pumpkin pie is goooooooood!

It’s just 10-20% of the bill at places like restaurants and barber shops or if you order delivery.

20% for good service. Tip zero & complain to the manager for shitty service. You're welcome. The reason for tips is because most servers earn WAY BELOW minimum wage. Sometimes only 2 or 3 bucks an hour. A "good" server will make bank in tips.

Yes, 20% for restaurants, please. Some people still use the old standard of 15%. Ten percent is low and you look cheap. It's confusing to us too when you tip bartenders, cab or Uber drivers, hair stylists and manicurists, hotel maids and some other hotel staff, and, according to TV, delivery people. Even Americans find some of this confusing and end up whispering to friends "am I supposed to leave a tip?" and "how much?". This is where 10% can be ok. Just make sure you tip your restaurant servers because they are indeed paid way below minimum wage because it's assumed they'll get tips. It's a weird system.

I’m generally at 20% at a sit down place. I’ve rarely had bad service that was the waitstaff’s fault. Most busy restaurants the waitstaff and bar staff can earn over $300 in a Friday or Saturday night. If you’re a full time server, it’s not really meant to be a career. Foreign tourists have complained about the tip but rave about the service, which keeps your non-alcoholic drinks topped off and always tries to sell you another beer/wine/mixed drink.
