Күн бұрын

As the Cobra Kai story continues to unfold, we’ve seen the emergence of 3 different karate schools, each of which have completely different fighting styles that have developed over the course of the 4 seasons so far. The fighting styles represent the essence of their respected sensei’s and reflect on the strict discipline required in order to learn them. In today’s video I’m going to take you all though the karate styles of Cobra Kai, Miyagi Do and Eagle Fang. I’ll be highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each style while also addressing how they are at the core of each dojos disciplinary structure.

Half right. Miyagi-do was inspired by goju-ryu karate. The creator of the franchise was a black belt in goju-ryu and isshin-ryu based Mr Miyagi on a goju-ryu sensei who taught near the military base he was serving at on Okinawa during the 1960s. The name Miyagi is of course in honor of Chojun Miyagi, founder of goju-ryu. Cobrai kai was based on American Tang Soo Do (Chuck Norris System). The film's choreographer, Pat Johnson was Chuck Norris' senior student and taught the Cobra Kai actors the Norris system since it technically wasn't based on a specific system unlike Miyagi-do (goju-ryu). There was no wado-ryu or kyokoshin influence whatsoever in the original movie arts because no one affiliated with the original movies had a background in those arts. However, since the TV show has/had a different choreographer/trainer than the movies (Hiro Koda), he added elements (kata, flashy moves) from his system (yoshukai karate) further modifying both "arts".

In terms of the real life choreography, they all have a mix of different karate-dō styles. But in terms of the universe of the show and movie series: Cobra Kai's Way of the Fist - Korean tang soo do style of pre-taekwondo and American karate. (In choreography, shōtōkan, kyokushin and American tang soo do also seem to be present in the Cobra Kai's Way of the Fist, as well as flashy moves that look more like kung fu choreography). Miyagi-Dō ryū - Gōjū-ryū, Isshin-ryū/(some) Shōrin-ryū and Okinawan kobudō. (Much of the same in choreography, but in the show it seems they've added flashy moves that weren't present in the original movie series, as well as some kenpō, especially with the "No be there" idea of defense). Eagle Fang karate-dō - Korean tang soo do and American karate, later with some Miyagi-Dō influence. (Choreography is pretty much the same or similar to Cobra Kai's).

Kyokushin isn't Cobra Kai, although there's a similar mentality to it. Cobra Kai is actually Tang Soo Do, a Korean style established using Shotokan Karate as a foundation with certain parts of old native Korean style blended in. When Japan owned Korea as an imperial territory, the Japanese banned any teaching of Korean fighting styles, but had no law about Koreans learning Japanese ones. After Korea was freed, the returning Koreans who'd been interested enough to earn black belts in Shotokan karate now incorporated Korean moves and styles into it and came up with Tang Soo Do - like Shotokan, but even MORE kick-focused, linear, aggressive and direct. Another of them, a Korean army office called Choi Hong Hi, also eventually founded Tae Kwon Do.
@barrettokarate
@barrettokarate Жыл бұрын
It's actually American Tang Soo Do, which is the original version of Chuck Norris' system (before it went through a series of name changes). The movies' choreographer Pat Johnson was Norris' senior most student and vice-president of his federation. It's a mix of the Moo Duk Kwan style of Tang Soo Do, Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Shudokan, Judo and a smidge of Hapkido. Johnson earned his black belt in South Korea, but after meeting Norris and relocating to Los Angeles switched to Norris' system.

@@barrettokarate Hmmmm..... you know, I think that's a problematic assumption. It certainly seems sensible on the surface, because Cobra Kai is unashamedly American, even if its base art is Korean, but Norris's version has too much balance and too many defensive add-ons in it. Cobra Kai is nakedly aggressive and more in proportion with its older parent art.

@@barrettokaratein terms of the real life choreography that may be true. But in the universe of the movie series and the show, Cobra Kai was only derived from Korean tang soo do (a style of pre-taekwondo while being it's own martial art, along with other Korean pre-taekwondo styles and martial arts like taekkyon) with some American karate.

Cobra Kai was based on American Tang Soo Do (ATSD), which was the original version of Chuck Norris' system (before it went through a series of other name changes) not kyokushin. The movie's original choreographer/trainer was Pat E. Johnson who was Chuck's senior black belt. While Miyagi-do was based on goju-ryu karate which was the original screenwriter's actual style, Cobra Kai wasn't specifically based on any art, so Johnson simply taught the actors a basic version ATSD. Those were the styles from the movies... The TV show has completely different choreographer and writers. The choreographer comes from a style called Yoshukai and you can see him adding elements from his art in there. You see the actors performing movements from kata not found in goju-ryu for example. You also see them (or rather the stunt doubles) performing XMA and MMA types moves that never would have been done in the original movies. 5:50 By the way what the hell was that? Was that supposed to be an ax kick? Since when do Okinawan stylists execute a specifically Korean style kick? Why would you let someone who obviously isn't flexible enough to do it perform it on screen? It looks horrible.

Cobra kai is a new art created by master who knew Tang soo do and did what Bruce Lee did when he created jeet ken do a new fighting style out of Wing Chung. It wasn't Tang soo do or karate that was taught in a normal dojo but a Cobra kai specific( as far as we are told) style you can't learn anywhere else. The problem since nobody actually invented a new art called the way of the fist the show can only use existing martial arts to create fight scenes. If it existed it wouldn't look like Tang soo do or karate but something else or the combination of styles

Miyagi do is focuses on defence one self and others, balance and innerpeace. It created by miagi's anchesters. In 1625 Shimbo Miyagi learnt the technique when he was china for 10 years. Cobra kai is focused on offence, being aggresive, show no mercy, use any meansneccesary to win even by cheating and attacking someone when he wasn't ready. Eagle fang is focused on being aggresive, being badass and per strike.
