Think "half-whole diminished scale" as a blend of two different diminished seven chords. In this case, those two chords are A°7 (A, C, Eb, Gb) and E°7 (E, G, Bb, Db). Together, they form a scale, and the notes are C, Db, Eb, E, Gb, G, A, Bb, and higher C. Notice, you can see two different chords: A-C-Eb-Gb and E-G-Bb-Db.

Very helpful. I like your approach because you jump to the root's relative minor, trace its fully diminished 7th, then do the same with the 5th of that relative minor. It just makes identifying the notes easier.

Yeah, something I was looking for. That's the sound of jazz there, some diminished runs over 7th chords. Tasty

Just found this video on KZfaq, and I am amazed how good this video is - clear, simple, to the point, easy to grasp, with good visual demonstration - a great example, how things should be taught. Subscripting right away!

Wow, thank you, Simon. What another great video. When I first learned scales/chords, I'd play a scale, then the major, minor, seventh (Dom), diminished chords, then move to the next scale in the Circle. As a kid, the diminished was not a chord I gravitated to... not till I got into blues and jazz that is. BTW, no one ever taught me that half-diminished even existed; only [fully] diminished. Either I had less than comprehensive teachers or music and how it's taught has. Anyway, thanks again for everything you do.

Thanks a lot Simon. Tutorials are great. I am really learning something. I am a moderate piano player and was always doing the same tricks over and over. Boring.. Your tips and lesson are opening a complete new pianoworld for me, how to approach my improvisation. I am improving ! I feel it. Its great. Even if you are not quite talented like me , practising over and over gets me somewhere. Keep up the good works. Greets from Amsterdam

When playing the half whole c diminished do you use this right hand fingering 123 12 123? With that scale there is no way to break it into two groups of 1234 (right hand) as you can with B half whole diminished (right hand thumb on B and on F). Also, when you play Eb, Gb and A dim do you finger exactly like C so that there are only three fingerings to learn? Like if you start B dim half whole on thumb, do you always start D dim half whole on third finger (right hand)? Lastly, do you practice these scales in left hand or combined parallel or contrary?

Simon..nice lick ..doing it about 70% speed. Been trying to incorporate it into my playing. C to Db to its 4th (Gb) go back a minor 3rd Eb.. Then go up to the 4 (Ab) back the minor 3rd to F.. F goes to itsn4 (Bb)..that goes to Eb..Eb falls back a min 3rd..which is a C. I am not looking at the sheet music, but I think that is correct. The best..

Nice description. Certain scales like C HW dim have stuck in my head. It was easier to go up a H then up a 4th.eg. CDb Gb then back to Eb to E then 4th to A. then F# G up a 4th to.C. Back to A up a H to Bb then up a 4th to Eb then back down to Eb..same as before. Should be the same notes as the sheet music. I just noticed another pattern as well as the HW diminished scale..we.continue going backwards a min 3rd..then forward.
