When my kitchen cloth gets a little gross I sometimes just microwave it to kill off any bugs.
@SALSN

I didn't say it was a golden solution, it might actually be a little gross, but still better than wiping something with a cloth with a live colony of bacteria ;-)

+Simon Als Nielsen If you buy organic food, it's also a great way to prevent dry grains like rice from being infected with mites and stuff - 30s at max power will do the job.
@SALSN

Patrice Jaeck inside the package to improve shelf life? Do you have any data on that? Because I've been wondering how much power you actually need to make sure everything is dead.
@p7j5
@p7j5 8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Als Nielsen I mostly buy grain 'by weight' with no dedicaced packaging, but it would work as well with packaged food. I put the grain 1 kg at a time in a plastic bucket, microwave it for 30s with the rotating tray active and then pour it into a clean glass jar with a sealing cap (I reuse apple juice glass bottles that have a quite large sealing cap). The grain gets out of the oven at ~35-40°C as you can barely feel it being warm with the back of your hand. I've kept one jar of millet (extremely parasited grain) for four years now for experimenting purpose and there's no sign of parasites at all - so i guess it's a pretty effective technique =) My microwave outputs 800 W at full power and i suspect that anything living gets toasted in the first few seconds, but i'd say that one full turn of the rotating tray is the minimum amount of time you have to apply microwaves to it.

It amazes me how many people actually seem to put so much effort into staying 'clean'. Ironically some of the cleanest people also get sick the most often. It's akin to wanting to 'save your muscle cells' so you dont use them and they just disappear. Your immune system NEEDS to be exposed, ideally you'd want it exposed to as much bacteria and viruses as it could handle without being detrimental to your health to keep it as strong as possible

ahem, mabey you should swab the washing machine door seal based on the 'smell' theory, since 1 study found 43% of washing machines had E-coli going round, mabey we should change on how we wash, not when we wash. iv'e come across a few machines in my life that stick worse than a sewer, and i have a poor sense of smell. meanwhile my own smell like brand new machines with a hint of surf.
