Pirandello did a play about this - about all the heads of people we knew or respected, or even imagined and respected, and what their opinions would be, then how that influenced us. It was more a play to read than to be acted out, and was a favorite of mine. I've read two different versions of the English translation, and one was superior to the other.

I like Klucharev's explanation at the end, mainly because it's the same thought I had -- groupthink tends to be more accurate than an individual member's thinking. However, that only explains conformity... what biological reason would we have for rebellion?

Ender Skies I don't have to be English to understand the value of liberty and sovereignty. The simple fact of the matter is, England just avoided so many issues that would have involved the EU by leaving. IF you think that since I'm American I have no say in the matter, I'll gave you know I've personally done research on all sorts of government's worldwide. EU will make a Detroit out of any place it has influence over. There will be growing pains, but the English pound will increase in value significantly as the UK becomes a party party not a slave to the EU elite.

I think his conclusion as to why we align our opinion with the groups opinion is not correct("group smartness") . It's more driven by the fear of ostracism, which meant gene/literal death when we were still hunters and gatheres and were throwing poop at each other. It's certainly a little bit of both. ALSO - I will rebel against the shortness of the videos and the important questions that aren't asked in these short youtube-conforming productions!

So _why_ do people have different "conformity" centers in their brains? If it can't be changed in aduits, can it be changed in still-developing brains? And why do these videos always avoid asking the important questions?

I think it depends on the test. This is just one (aesthetics) among several that can be administered.

Maybe this show my stripes but I don't think this test is perhaps the best way of measuring conformity because it's playing with other deep rooted parts of personality such as attraction.
@HeretixAevum
@HeretixAevum 8 жыл бұрын
But isn't that what makes the test possible in the first place? the questions asked have to be subjective in order to test whether people conform to hive mind. All subjective matters involve deep rooted traits, attractiveness seems as good as any a topic to me.
@RpattoYT
@RpattoYT 8 жыл бұрын
Doomguy I suppose what I'm getting at is eliminating any pre-established bias so that it's very clear whether the participants are making a conformist or non-conformist decision. What we find attractive is closely tied to emotion, were as given the choice between Taupe, and Wenge, people might be more inclined to just go with the flow or if they're more non-conformist intentionally be different.
@dropmelon
@dropmelon 8 жыл бұрын
What we find attractive doesn't matter in this test. The real test is whether or not we felt alarmed when our rating doesn't align with others. Conformists would feel alarmed if their rating differs from others while rebels won't feel alarmed.

remilia scarlet Read my other comment but in short surely this effects the result particularly in the second test.
@dropmelon
@dropmelon 8 жыл бұрын
rpatto92 The other comment that you write only mention that what we find attractive is closely tied to emotion. The attractions only affects the first test which is supposed to happen. This test is to see if we would subconciously feel peer pressure to conform to what others think. After you see what others had rated, conformists would rate it much closer to the group while rebels would rate it much further from the group. This test doesn't work if the person memorize what their and others rating were in the first test. As a side note,if we try to eliminate any pre-established bias,people won't be a conformist or a rebel. Their answer won't differ from their first test if they're neutral which is unlikely to happen.

03:53 - _"The average group opinion is better than individual opinion"_. Unfortunately, this might be construed as meaning that conformity with a centralised establishment is better than non-conformity (being a rebel against a power structure). When he uses the term "average opinion", he is most likely talking about the many vastly differing *individual* opinions _averaging_ out to a *generalised* opinion that is much more accurate than one single perspective when it comes to finding truth. For instance, an experiment was done that asked people to predict how many sweets were in a jar. The more guesses they had from more people eventually averaged out to be extremely close to the number of sweets, even though some individuals were completely off the mark. This same logic can be applied to survival where a tribe will take into consideration the sensory input from all members. When one individual detects a lion but the rest do not, there is the perception that there "could" be a lion but they are not sure. When the majority detect a lion in the bushes, there is the perception that there IS a lion and they need to protect themselves. This form of group think is great for survival and is probably why this section of the brain exists. "Group opinion", when all are involved in creating it, really IS better than the "individual opinion" when it comes to survival. However, conformity to a centrally-controlled power structure where the opinion is only created by a few individuals is not very good for survival, since the opinions being used in decision making are only made by a few individuals in dank, smokey rooms. The vast majority of opinions within society simply aren't taken into consideration, so the movement of society is perturbed from its natural course. For instance, money is spent on wars instead of building spaceships to mine asteroids and colonise other planets; the opinions of a few individuals have overridden the opinions of the majority.

But what does this test really prove? Only that one conforms, or doesn't conform, to crowd-think when declaring the attractiveness of various photos of humans. It seems to have nothing to do with whether one is a conformist or non-conformist. Show me photos of cars and I'd guess the results would be different, or parade actual humans in front of me, or photos of fish, or... It is beyond ridiculous to think that this is anything more than a very limited experiment that proves almost nothing.
@JimGriffOne
@JimGriffOne 8 жыл бұрын
biker451 I see your point. It does seem rather a strange test to do for conformity. The only angle I can imagine they're coming from is cultural bias when it comes to recognition of beauty in faces from that culture. For instance, if they showed asian faces, they'd score a lot higher. But this still doesn't appear to prove anything about "conformity" in general. You're right. Something seems to be missing or we've not been told how the whole of the experiment works.

Am I the only one so far noticing a flaw in the reasoning of this experiment? It talks about conformity (or not) to group opinion, yet in reality (to me) it appears to be more about being either easily or not so easy influences by any information that deviates from what you already know, be it from a group or individual or just the reality around you. Being able to adjust opinions (or your model of reality) based on corrective signals, is a crucial part of our ability to learn. It may be hard to tell which balance between susceptibility and resistance to that would be optimal for an optimal result (we live in a very complex world), but the principle is crucial for any development/progress of the brain. To me it feels like this focus on group conformity vs being rebellious is putting an unnecessary and confusing cultural dimension to what essentially is an easy to understand fundamental neurological brain function. As others have commented, this video also smells like it is politically charged in that it appears to relate to the #brexit referendum.

The display showing what the cloud thinks looked like a correctness indicator. [You picked 3, but the answer was 4.] or [You got that wrong.] 0:11 "The group opinion" could, many times, be more like a comment section than a multiple-choice test or rating scale. What number is this face, lol.

I am pretty sure I would get a rebel result, I mean my first instinct would be to go even more extrem with my opinions and thus fall even more away from any group result. But I think diversity is far better than bland mediocrity anyway, and love to play devil's advocate just to adjust ideas with additional view points that others might not have considered and create that way progress.

These days the majority opinion is bollocks. During our evolution we were tuned for survival in the wild, but we now live in a world that we perhaps haven't evolved to deal with effectively and thus conformity can be a disadvantage instead of an advantage.
