I had a slight panic moment when I woke up this morning and saw that the video file was corrupted. But luckily, my sleep schedule has gotten a lot healthier and I can now wake up early enough to resolve the problem! Anyway, I've got lunch with my mom. Have a nice day.

Author of the lizard druid story here. Wow, I thought that one was lost to time. In hindsight, I agree with crispy. And some of the of the comments posted here. My relationship boundaries may have been a little much. But I was younger and newly married 😅 and I may have pushed the lizard folk thing a little too hard. Anyway. It's been a long time. Closure has been achieved. So i feel comfortable elaborating on a few things. 1. It was probably the least important, but this was not a homebrew world. Turned out Dm completely ripped off shadow of the dragon queen. 2. DM was, in fact, "into" me. And had a...fetish for non-human species( i like to play animal humanoids like tabaxi, leonin, tortles, and of course, lizard folk) 3. My wife has come a long way, and after, I showed her the story and explained the events. She's accepted that i'm not gonna hurt her in the same way. This other person did. Thanks for reading my story crispy. Can't say they were good memories, but it feels good to laugh at them again. Thank you, everyone, for your positive comments on the situation. As well as any constructive ones that i'm sure will come later ❤

I just have to echo what Crispy said, having your boundaries is your business, and the fact that you had been catching trouble from people already, paired with the atrocious treatment from that GM, is not acceptable. I hope you have had better luck with finding groups that accept you as you are since this, and am glad to hear that you got at least some closure, cause I know how much that kind of thing can stick with a person and mess with your head. (I am a forever GM who collects Consent in Gaming forms from my players, and discusses this stuff very openly with my players in session zero, because of having had a player in the past who behaved like that GM and was attempting to force situations that made myself and a player both uncomfortable, and which they knew weren't okay with us, then when I put my foot down started attempting to gaslight us on the topic)

@joshuayost1745 I said "seems" because I figured there would be a reason behind not doing romance for your wife's sake and yeah, after something like that it's totally understandable. Like crispy said I don't think romance rp is cheating but even if you just weren't comfortable with it, partner or not, your boundaries should've been respected. Saw your other comment and sadly by now the dm being a creep doesn't surprise me, though I managed to miss that when I first heard the story. Hope you and your wife are doing well now!

And i've joined many sessions since the incident, and I'll admit yes. I Took the leap and played a changeling bard/paladin. I think you can guess How that turned out 🤣 And from what I hear DM got her act together too. But i'm taking that person's word on it tbh Safe to say we have all come a long way.

If I was dealing with that first DM, I'd just describe my every little movement to an utterly asinine degree. "I step forward with my left foot, then I step forward with my right foot, I step forward with my left foot, then I step forward with my right foot, I pause as i notice an itch on my left buttcheek, I raise my left arm 30 degrees to the left, then reach back until my left hand is lined up with my left buttcheek, then I curl my index finger, my middle finger, my ring finger, and my pinky finger upwards, gently grazing the surface of my buttocks with my fingernails in the spot that itches..." continue until DM either stops being a pedantic jackass or just kicks me from the game

I would just end every description of regular things as "like a normal human being would" and not elaborate further because that's already describing everything in full detail. If the GM then acts like that again, I just ask if that's how HE normally does these things in real life. And if he says no, I ask why he thinks MY CHARACTER would.

Honestly even putting aside OP's boundary (and we shouldn't, I am speaking hypothetically), the DM would still be in the wrong. If a player doesn't want their character to do ERP, they shouldn't have to, period. No amount of "you're derailing the game" can counter that.

Ive seen three comments already saying the op meant regalia and not realia but they meant realia, crispy had the correct definition: realia are three-dimensional objects from real life such as coins, tools, and textiles, that do not fit into the traditional categories of library material.

In the second story, I have to point out that "good friend I absolutely adore" and "I can't talk about the ways they've hurt me without them exploding at me" are not complimentary statements. Best case scenario, they're genuinely a good friend with issues around emotional regulation, but any relationship where you can't communicate is eventually going to fall apart from resentment. Worst case scenario, that kind of explosive over-reaction (anger, sadness, anxiety, whatever) is a common way for abusers and other toxic people to control you, by forcing you to manage their emotions. Either way, just letting things fester like that is never going to end well.

As someone who has RP’d intimacy, in fact, as a group of friends with my bf also partaking, it can be fun, although incredibly awkward and silly, we were all giggling as we tried to describe everything via firearm innuendos. We made a rule that we couldn’t elaborate, which lead to some very stupid and silly mixups. However, that was done with everyone’s explicit consent. And afterwards when one of the people would end up in a relationship, he asked to not partake in intimate RP’s, and that is perfectly fine. Boundaries are to be expected, ESPECIALLY around intimacy, and while it can be fun, you have to tread carefully. One of the reasons for the innuendos is that I and another player were not comfortable doing any sort of description aloud otherwise, so we instead stuck to it. TL;DR, as someone who has done intimate roleplays, boundaries are the first things established, and consent can be revoked at any point in time, and that is to be respected

[druid] NO. YOU DID NOT OVERREACT. DO NOT LET THE DM BULLY YOU INTO BELIEVING YOU DID. No *GOOD* DM will FORCE players or their characters into something that makes them that uncomfortable. If a DM does plan something questionable for story's sake, they should ask their players if they can handle something like it. (I mean, Critical Role had an *orgy* and the only one uncomfortable seemed to be the DM.) And in this case the DM *already knew your boundary*. Unacceptable.

Last story, it's pretty telling that DM also muted every other player. They probably were vouching for the OP. 14:58 this sorta reminds me of my first time being a dm; while I was definitely not ready for it and didn’t understand the rules well enough, I think the biggest problem was that I was constantly exhausted from none of my players being willing to cooperate with me. I'm a pretty big fan of playing characters who aren't necessarily friends with the party and are reluctant to be here. But my philosophy for those characters is " they don't want to be here and that's why they have to be." Because the fun and development of them comes from putting them in situations they don't want to be in and interacting with others. I don't understand the combative loner who just refuses to play the game.

I may have only ever DMed one session ever (and that was 20 years ago), but I guarantee that Edgy in the second story would have been given one chance to stop acting like a dill weed, and if he refused to play ball, then he'd have been told to leave & that he wasn't welcome back at my table unless & until his attitude improved. Is that stance a bit harsh? Maybe, but I work 9 hour shifts on a military base, and I gotta deal with douchebags all day at work, so I don't want to deal with them when I'm supposed to be having fun...

The second story's new DM I have a suggestion for, try a side game--different night of the week from the usual game--with the other players there, just don't invite Edgy, don't even mention it to them. You had support from the rest, and should be able to gain some experience and become more comfortable with it. And while it may be unlikely, you might even be able to talk the new player into showing up if they know Edgy won't be there--do explain that Edgy made you uncomfortable as well, that shared experience plus your willingness to try again might, possibly, be enough. Also, before actually sitting down to that game, maybe you and your wife, potentially the other semi-forever DM as well, invite New Player to sit and watch some Critical Role or similar--let them see how it *can* be but also make sure they understand that every group has its own dynamic and shouldn't try to duplicate another group's atmosphere; all bonds are different. Hope this helps; it's always a shame to see new players/DMs take such a hard knock that they don't risk it again.

One definition for realia is: things or concepts that are specific to a culture or a language (and thus can be hard to translate toward langage that don't have the object or concept - like a fjord, a kimono or la commedia dell’arte). So my guess is, in the RPG context, that the DM made models of stuff that are specific to his world so his players would be able to understand what he's talking about.

Intro: I can only imagine what a long campaign with that DM would be like. "We go to sleep." "You sleep on the floor because you didn't get into bed. Your backs are sore, disadvantage on all physical checks until the next long rest. Also, you pissed yourselves because you didn't go to the bathroom before bed." Story 1: The DM should've been upfront about sweeping play style changes. While I suspect the players may be problems in their own right, the DM handled this session poorly. Story 2: Edgy isn't sensitive, he's just a dick. I don't know how this guy manages to come off as a likable friend when he apparently self-flagellates at the most minor of oppositions. Story 3: Why is he putting so much into HP if his strategy is getting out of the enemies' range as quickly as possible? Those two things don't synergize, he's just wasting feats. I'd have booted him after his first attempt at whining over being targeted. It's clear from the start he's not being genuine. Why the other players want to put up with that, I have no idea. The reveal at the end explains a lot. Last story: Was the DM just trying to come onto OP? If a teenage character visits yours at night and calls herself your reward, I'd say the best option is to ask who sent her and turn it into a confrontation with her guardian or an uncomfortable conversation about self worth, depending on if she came to you on her own. A hard no if the DM still can't take the hint.

They played a literal raven, and the character would fly so they could never be hit and then, when my abysmal dice rolls caused my character to go down (and lose a limb once, but that one's my fault), they'd try and push the party to go back into the area we almost died in because THEIR character was fine and wanted loot. When I played a dnd campaign for my family, my dad would often go against my plot hooks, denying quests and refusing to help people. It would infuriate me, and he knew this. The worst part is that I knew exactly why he did it; because he wanted to teach me to convince him. He told me, “you don’t like how I’m refusing to do what you tell me to do, right Will? Well, people will do that a lot in the business world. If you want to be a good marketer, you need to be able to convince people to do things. Try to take my interests and use them against me to get me to do what you want. My character likes gold, so amp up the pay!” This guy, on the other hand, was refusing to follow the plot simply because he wanted to be edgy and rebellious, or maybe he just thought it was funny to make your DM frustrated.

Intro Story: This is what happens when you get your DM advice from those "GOTCHA!" Dm memes on r/TTRPGmemes. 1st Story: Something tells me people would have gladly paid for the relatively rules-light way the DM of the story was originally running. Its a classic case of "he who tries to hunt two rabbits catches neither"; he tried to be more serious because he thinks that's what paid dms do, and in doing that to his party, lost his friends and his will to play DnD. Kinda sad, really. 2nd story: You'd think Edgy would understand how hard it is to DM for the first time, seeing how OP is, and how tough it is to start playing with the newcomer that he conspicuously killed any interest for them. I don't mean to be an armchair psychologist, but Edgy has to be a narcissist. 3rd story: I got nothing to say except fuck Mike, and if he runs the Senate the way he plays DnD, we're gonna have lots of lame duck sessions and government shutdowns in the future Final story: First rule of DMing is to listen when your party says they have boundaries. How is this any different from some sweaty neckbeard trying to play the elven princess that loves c*ck? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the dm was trying to flirt with OP

I won't lie the DiA guy sounds like a nightmare player, the party wanted dynamite and guns and when they DM said no they brought out the DMG for why they should. The DM said the wanted to follow the rules more amd then was fought on that during the game, honestly I got the impression he was tired of having bosses die to peasant railguns. Even the paid DM thing would have resolved with people talking to him but they didn't until it all festered. At best it is a difference in play styles and at worst it is a DM finally standing up to a Bully Party and then freaking out at him.

I'm pretty loose with the kinds of races I allow; the only time I really hard ban race options is when the presence of those races really won't fit with anything I have personally set up, or I think really won't work with the vibe I am looking for with the setting. That said, if someone wants to play a serious character in a more lighthearted/comedic campaign or a silly character in a more serious campaign, I will usually allow it, mostly because I think the juxtaposition of having those kinds of characters in those settings can really set up for some more entertaining moments in the game, it also helps to have those juxtaposition characters present because they help keep things from slipping too far in the other direction (which can help everyone else avoid genre fatigue). And yes, Genre fatigue is a real thing, if you don't have some break from that sort of thing with the characters themselves, then you can actually be turned off by it all; if everyone is a gritty character with no actual downtime to unwind in a grim and gritty setting, it can do a lot to ruin the mental state of the participants and audience, and if everything silly all the time with no real somber moments to break things up you can basically get the same result. DMs/GMs that are so focused on keeping everything within the bounds of the setting are doing themselves and their players a disservice, and they can actually ruin the fun for the table by having the abscense of those juxtopostions they ironically banned from the table. Paradoxically, having those juxtaposition characters present in the setting helps to keep the setting alive and possibly even thriving. In the case of those more comedic settings, a lot of comedy can come from the juxtaposition of that non-comedic character in a more comedic world. And I hope Crispy actually catches this comment, despite coming practically a day after the video came out, so that he can speak to his thoughts on this, and he can do a video talking about this kind of stuff in the future.

I like your point about the players have the duty to engage with the story the DM makes just as much as the DM has to make hooks. That said, I sometimes like making a reluctant participant. The real trick is to be sure you make a way to be sure they will go, just with reasons to RP trying not to. while also making sure you're not making a mess of it out of character. As an example, in a recent game, I was the party's tank, aka human fighter built to be a front line on his own. His backstory was soldier for hire sort that the party's artificer had hired as a bodyguard. I was constantly suggesting we do basically anything safer for my boss than adventuring but went along when he said we're going because I wasn't going to abandon my job. I ended up in a few talks with my DM making sure I was having fun because of him worrying my IC grumbling wasn't a subtle hint his game sucked. He was a new GM and was worried since I'm an old fart and started playing before he was born.

Some of these just make me think of my last campaign. In my last campaign, I was playing a dumb character, but he was lawful good and had a good heart and would put himself in danger, and only himself if it meant protecting another person I didn't do certain things because my only reason for doing them would have been "it's what my character would do" and I really didn't want to be that guy. Then, the next day, I was talking about the game to the dm and mentioned a few things I wanted to do and ultimately didn't do because of said reason. His response was literally that he wished I had because not only would someone have actually played their lawful good character (it was a good campaign and all, but two of the group were lawful) none of those choices would of harmed the party in anyway and the only problem he saw was the lawful Cleric constantly bragging about he was holding back against the swarm of enemies then constantly asking if the BBEG was dead after every hit he made

Ohh.... oh the start of that gave me flashbacks to the old yahoo user rooms and the old styles of fighting, particular T3 I believe it was which involved very detailed paragraphs that you had to type up in such a way as to basically checkmate your opponent into being unable to defend themselves and take the hit. It was also very common for people to want highly detailed paragraph roleplays that did very much what the DM Wanted, as in describing what you do with what hand, how the fingers flex, some even wanted it right down to the muscle contractions it was outrageous. God that was two decades ago and honestly.. I don't miss it and miss it at the same time. Yahoo user rooms were friggin wild sights to behold and yet some of the most predatory places you could ever come across.

As a player who regularly does both, Power-gaming and Min-maxing by itself is not inherently bad. Using it to pad your severe Main Character Syndrome, to not work as a team player, and to do everything you can to "outsmart" the DM and break the game *are* each problems in their own right. Work with the DM when approaching grey areas and be a team player, both in and out of combat.

Whenever I build a character I have a couple of things in the back of my mind in most cases - Why will the character want to work with this group if that doesn't get baked into character creation by the system, and a couple of 'what if' for why the character might get involved with adventure that I can justify it with (if the pitch isn't 'stranded in a strange world' style thing which I've been playing a fair amount lately) As for the last story - There are ways of doing romance in games. Those ways require a) Everyone involved in the romantic interaction to be on board with it; b) Everyone at the table to be ok being present while romantic roleplay is happening; c) clear boundaries of how far it should go and respecting those boundaries. If you don't have those things, fade to black rather than playing it out. And that goes quadruple for sexual stuff.

Third story DM: It's not your fault, and Edgy might be a great person/friend outside of D&D but I have my doubts. The truth is that you need to talk to Edgy, and if they can't handle the criticism, that's on them. You can't spend your whole friendship dancing around their issues with criticism, because it will poison your friendship. You did nothing wrong, and I hope one day you can experience GMing with soeone who is not a complete problem player, as the kind of behaviour Edgy exhibited was NOT normal for a D&D game. I'm really sorry about New Player, that sucks and I hope she eventually gives it another try.
@zixserro1
@zixserro1 6 ай бұрын
Second Story: None of what happened was DM's fault, and they shouldn't blame themselves at all. Edgy sounds awful, in and out of game; he sound extremely manipulative, and he's taking advantage of DM's kind nature by making them feel guilty about Edgy's shortcomings, putting all the blame on others for their own problems. The fact that New Player left because of Edgy isn't DM's fault, either, and that alone should be enough for DM to be able to blame Edgy and confront him about his behavior. After all, it wasn't his character's concept being bad that made him act that way towards another player-character; that was him trying to be difficult. Any player at a new DM's table should be respectful and work with the DM to help them through the experience; if they aren't willing to do that, then they shouldn't be welcome at the table, because they're just rude. EDIT: Also, additional thought: if Edgy's reason for acting that way was to "prepare DM for difficult players", DM should just drop them. Nobody needs a 'friend' who'll make things difficult on purpose just to try to teach them a lesson. That isn't how learning something for the first time works at all.

I've just started playing Descent Into Avernus (2nd session tomorrow as I'm writing this! No spoilers! :P). It's my first time actually playing D&D, though across the previous academic year, I played Deadlands Classic and, of course, I've watched stuff like Critical Role and Dimension 20, albeit very off and on. Our first session was just spent on that first fight in the tavern, but I thought it went over quite smoothly for us. Perhaps we just got lucky, and I do have to admit that I didn't realise until nearly-too-late that an important NPC nearly died (we soon finished the fight after that, though, so it was fiiiiine :3). I'm playing a Tiefling Bard, and I actually managed to kill the Pirate Captain with a Vicious Mockery! "You're the Captain!? The stench on you, I thought you were the one who swabs the poop deck!" (Yes, I'm aware the poop deck wasn't actually for pooping :P)

I can definitley understand the one dm not wanting to run their concept again. There are quite a few ideas or concepts that I've played or used in a game and the negativity or strife around it made it feel bad to handle again. I will say while I don't agree entirely with that one dm I do understand and partially agree that some equipments being optional and not in a setting can be important and while it doesn't hurt to ask sometimes a no is a no

Firstly- “Boomstick equal fun” is stuck in my head now lmao. Secondly, I got nothing against “thirst trap/f**kboi” outfits (I joke about putting my own character, an 18, soon to be 19year old Orc [which would make him 26-28 in Human Years] in such outfits, though with a Fey/Fantasy twist, as he worships Llira, goddess of Joy. Instead he ends up in either Gothic or Bollywood style formal wear, or in Modern Day Adventurer gear with a leather jacket and combat boots, lol). It’s when that is, basically the entire personality that it becomes an issue, lol. My own character as an example, I love fashion in anime and fantasy, and that carries over in my orc. But he’s a lot deeper than basic edgy noble. He’s actually been amazing fun to play and see his growth. I’m eagerly waiting for Campaign 2 to continue his story with my table, while running some Lost Mine of Phandelver to give the dm time to finish his prep.

For the third story, that's not a power gamer. This is a guy who can't differentiate between himself and his character and has a Player v. He only cares about "winning" and doesn't seem to be interested in the other PC's or the collaborative storytelling

As for edgy & “that’s what my character would do”…did every other player have a character that would just accept edgy’s actions? I get the new player being tacit, but the other players were playing CNs that were choosing to laugh at it, evil looking at how to manipulate it, or were just staying OOC. As a PC I’ve pushed other PCs out of parties, you can do that…though it may become violent in &/or out of game…but that can be fun too. If out of party, then one of you don’t belong in that group, if just in party, then roll with it…ousted player roll up new or PCs actually resolve it, DM could get involved…how many times have we seen in movies party members fighting when enemies or cops or some other outside force comes around leading them to work together or maybe even work against each other…then maybe even some guilt tripping into, ok, you wanted him gone but to get him captured may be too far, we should free him then go from there. Remember, two supposedly very experienced DMs as players…and they apparently acted like worthless noobs. On the last, I was hoping to hear it was a group of teenage players, but no. Regardless, the DM, not the player, went crazy on trying to force something that really didn’t matter…unless it was somehow a whole Firefly episode 3 scenario & the player ended the call just before it got crazy derailing the whole plot, think she was a redhead too, then yeah, I can get why the DM was frustrated.

I remember playing DIA with my sister as the DM, and she told me out of game that we actually almost died several times in the first dungeon crawl, and the only reason we didn't is because she majorly nerfed the damage we would have received. One time my character, who was really into history and lore, touched a tapestry and almost got one-shot by a puff of poisonous spores that dealt just over twice her HP. According to my sister, that damage was rolled exactly per the book. She also had to play Mortlock as an ally to get us through the rest of the dungeon without dying because he was much stronger than any of us, I guess. Unfortunately, the game dissolved not long after we escaped the dungeon because we all got really busy, so I never got to see the rest of the module. My initial experience with it was not the greatest, but maybe it gets better/more balanced later on. Or maybe we all just sucked at making characters.
