This edit was not too bad but there was a lot of... life getting in my way. It's honestly getting pretty annoying to keep up with everything at once. But hey, life waits for no one. I did get some new art for my D&D game, so that was nice to see. Anyway, off to bed. It's been a long day.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Second Story: I don't think it's so much that the DM didn't think they could handle someone with disabilities in their game, and more that they wanted to bully a blind person under the guise of "It's just how it would be in the world I'm narrating." Gross behavior, glad OP got out of there.

I've lost my vission a few years ago, and would have ripped him a new one over that garbage. I totally get you. It's stressful as heck when you need so much help to play a game you love as is. Then to have a total jerk like pull this bullying nonsense just because you have a disability. I can tell you cowards like him will cry like a girl if you get hold of them. I've put my fair share of bullies to the ground, because their ego is so inflated that they believe that just because you cant see you couldn't possibly do anything to them. They're always dead wrong. wether its with words or a swift knee to the groin. they all have fragile *cough* egos that easily break with enough hits. Not that violence or being mean should be the go to firstly, but you need to take some kind of stand against them. Wether its telling them its not okay, or just walking away from the situation under the statement you're not going to take their crap. Some kind of push back is always better than just taking it. Hold your head high, because you do matter. Also as a heads up if you ever need it. All phones have a voice assistant program pre-installed in them. Its in the settings. They all tend to have different names. For the samsung galaxy s24 ultra it's called Talk Back. Which that name always makes me think that program is going to give the user a jerk teen attitude. LOL😂

Sorry, 10 years later, I’m a couple of weeks away from my second ever campaign, DMing for my younger brother and a couple of his friends. I even plan on bringing back my blind dwarf, Who my friend reminded me a day or two ago was a barbarian not a paladin but again a decade it’s a long time. Anyway said dwarf is going to be the main quest giver and may or may not have the skull of an ancient red dragon complete with very obvious roughly acts shaped gouges on the side decorating his front garden because not only can blind people play Dungeons & Dragons but they can run the game too

I've seen a DM reuse their party's previous characters as NPCs... but, like, as Alternate Universe versions of themselves because they basically became demigods in the first campaign. So in this alternate universe one player's old PC was randomly encountered working at a bar, another was a mysterious nomad selling wares, etc. etc. Using regular character sheets was a way of both depowering them from godhood and keeping them strong enough to feel appropriate and respectful to the players who once played them. And it was cool to see each cameo and wonder where each party member's old character could be and what they worked as in this new universe.

The "Death by Hard Stuff" skit actually reminds me of the Quest for Glory games and the Dragon's Breath brew. Drinking a shot in the first game instantly kills you because you don't have the constitution score to handle it. You need to level up your character (over several games, in fact) to be able to drink it safely with no side effects.
@schwarzerritter5724
@schwarzerritter5724 2 ай бұрын
The first story reminds of one I had. The party started at level 3, the tavernkeeper offered each of of a glass of his strongest wine. We rolled constitution saves, everyone failed, Barbarian with a 23. Rogue becomes paralysed for 10 minutes, Barbarian and Monk take 34 damage each. Barbarian drops to 1 hitpoint, Monk almost gets instantly killed, goes unconscious and automatically fails 2 death saving throws. Barbarian then uses her starting magic item, a potion of healing, to save Monk. Had Barbarian chosen less than 16 constitution, we would have had to pass 6 death saving throws in a row or lost at least 1 character in the first 5 minutes.

DM for that Intro one here providing context- Dude min maxed pretty hard on his character build wise, but initially not unmanageably. I was basically convinced by him and someone else to allow a 3p thing they found printed that allowed a ritual to, yeah, put templates on peopple via a certain GP value, some skill checks, and ritual sacrifice. They were pirates, mixed alignment party, so on. Wasn't too happy with the results, and he as mentioned got weird about pressuring another PC into using the ritual which prompted me to yeah, come up with a way to level things out without needing that. Then he kept turning people into sentient statues and torturing them and nature took its proper paladin based smiting course. God we all do dumb things fresh outta highschool. Homebrews all well and good, but man was I bad at vetting stuff people wanted to use for balance back then.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I joined a DnD group through the VA and one of our party members was legally blind. We had extra large dice with easy to read numbers and his character sheet printed up in extra large font so he could go over his spell sheet as he was our dwarven sorcerer. He played, as he said, to be someone other than who he is. I loved playing alongside him, nevermind our characters(me a human fighter) had an intertwined backstory, but because I'd help him out with reading his rolls and spells. Unfortunately he had to leave because his vision has deteriorated to the point he's undergoing rehab to try and regain a degree of his vision. I miss seeing his smile at the table every time he wipes out an enemy with Magic Missile or shocking grasp.

I could count on my fingers the number of sessions I'd played before I decided to DM but I spent a lot of time preparing on top of listening to videos and reading articles on advice. So you _can_ DM without much experience but you have to compensate for your lack of experience by learning from others. And don't skip session zero. While I didn't technically host one as such, my players are people I've known for years IRL and we discussed starting the game as a group over like two weeks in Discord. So you can do the session zero stuff even if it's not a proper session

Thought I’d send a short and somewhat silly story. A while ago I ran a simple campaign for three friends that were new to dnd. One of the players was a bard, and a the group was challenged with a locked door. The bard jokingly decided to “rizz up” the door and went up to an irl door to lean on it for the bit. Unfortunately the door they decided to do it on didn’t have the mechanism that kept the door in the holder, aka the bit that the handle is supposed to move. Anyway, the bard ended up accidentally falling through the door. They were fine, but it was the funniest thing that happened all session and I said they succeeded due to it being so funny.

Ugh, we’ve had longer and probably grosser stories but that You Have To Be Blind one is probably the most infuriated at a story I’ve been in a while. You have people playing elves and wizards which they are not in real life but heaven forfend someone not include their disability in their character. And that bullshit with the tripping which the DM clearly wanted to happen regardless, I suspect even if the OP had rolled a Nat 20 something would have happened. Glad that got at least the friend outraged at last, I’m hoping the rest of the table also saw that as the bullshit it was

When it comes to the DM who can't DM, I'm reminded of how my DM in a game I was in just yesterday managed to do an interrogation. We were interrogating an NPC for connections or at the very least, if he was the villain we were searching for. The thing was that this NPC was written in a way that was designed to be cold. Pain didn't work (We tried to break a singular finger and he didn't even wince), and we had to come up with some way to get him to talk. Thankfully, the DM we had was a good DM, so we just said that we know his old squadmates (we knew of them, but not much) and that we would pay them a visit instead, as he's so unwilling to talk. And you know what? It got the NPC to start talking, he didn't spill everything, because he had loyalty to his old squad but he did give up one name, and a location, gaving us a lead. I feel like if the DM from the story was in charge, it would've had zero effect to threaten (or even imply a threat) to just completely blank all of that and railroaded us to doing one (1) specific thing that he had planned out.

24:36 Fun fact: PF1e/D&D 3.5 by default has monsters using similar rules to building PCs. Supposedly this is because PCs and monsters are supposed to be "equal," but in practice the games math-boosting number bloat makes it ridiculously hard to nail the numbers on, to the point that PF1e got alternate rules for building monsters that don't use player rules at all, and PF2e was built from the ground up as monsters being an entirely different beast. But yeah, throwing monsters with PC levels was a fairly regular way to bump up monsters in PF1e, especially if you wanted to, say, yank an orc up 1-3 levels.

adding one or two class abilities to monsters is actually really cool. the issue touched on is making a PC with the player's handbook from scratch in order to make custom enemies. the result tends to be a ton of work put into a single creature who is difficult to run combat with and isn't likely to use all the abilities he was given.

On the subject of being too good at something: The character I'm playing right now has 26 AC baseline (plus I can use Shield once per day and Gift of the Metallic Dragon 5 times to boost to 31) and attacks against me are at disadvantage (Cloak of Displacement). So a lot of enemies can only hit me by rolling 2 nat 20s. So I don't bother using disengage if I want to move away from an enemy as I'm confident they won't hit me. My DM recently gave up on having enemies try to take opportunity attacks on me. We were swimming across a channel infested with zombie sharks and I swam past like three and said "they can take opportunity attacks if they want. I'd love to see them try." The DM just sighed and said, "...No. No, that's alright." And I knew I had broken him.

Do I just post it in the Comment Section or Email it to you? (If any of the other players and DM read this, know you guys are awesome. Can't wait to play more sessions, and become Friends.)

Wait someone’s character order a shot of the hard stuff and the bartender served them poison, and the party just said forget it and when on the adventure. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would walk into a bar order a shot, gets served poison, and just say oh well I guess I’ll just go on my way. If that happened to me IRL, I would immediately call 911 and report an attempted murder, I would probably scream for help. I’m pretty sure a bartender could do some serious time, or in some civilizations hanging or beheading.

"Wyvaran" is a little different than wyvern. Though I think they were made by adding wyvern parts to kobolds.

You know how you deal with a person in your group who has a disability? By respecting them and treating them like you would anyone else. If they need some extra help, you give it to them, you don't disrespect them by trying to disable their character to "match" them. That DM was just a jerk.

Even if I was a DM like that...I'd simply give the player Blindsight of approx 30ft or even funnier truesight. Im not rolling a dice every time a blind character does something cuz that will get old very fasy

I have a brief retort to that statement from the intro story Crispy. The problem player gets their head kicked by a paladin, unless they are a paladin. We see an awful lot of that too.

Hey, LFGs aren't the worst thing. It does take some discretion to evaluate if the personalities will mesh though. The group I currently play with evolved out if a random advert for a Roll20 game I decided to run 8 years ago.

I actually think playing a blind character would be a lot of fun. A well-established heroic character is the wandering blind samurai and you could have a lot of fun with that. Furthermore, if a character who is blind is going to their usual bar and knows the layout, they’ll be fine. I think the DM didn’t understand anything about blind people.

Legit question: Is it a bad idea if you use character lvls for boss enemies? I made a couple enemies for my PCs to face as a goal to reach up to them to defeat them. I'm a new DM so I might be in the wrong here. I just wanna do right by my players.

It's better than bad DM that takes out of game context and uses it as a flaw to an in-game character. (Seriously F that DM)

18:00 - The idea of a game that punishes proficiency is somewhat interesting. Give the player a selection of skills, each of which levels up with use, and gets better as it levels up, but at max level it becomes unusable. You'd have to balance how you apply each of your skills to ensure that when you need them they're high enough, but that you don't overuse them to the point where they aren't available when they're needed. Call it 'Success is not an Option'.
@ArcCaravan

Disco Elysium did something like that, making skills that were maxed out force themselves to be used while affecting the playable detective's personality (also the skills were characters themselves).

I saw that same story. Doge's version felt more descriptive with some post-game details with everyone ditching DM in all games and offering a new game to OP.

The race is actually called a Wyveran. And yeah, lore wise, it's a result of magically crossbreeding kobolds and wyvern. They're a pretty cool race if slightly OP due to flight. They have an optional racial trait that remedies this, though, if the GM desires.

Once again I'm going to have to disagree with you on the giving npcs/monsters class-levels thing. It isn't as overly complicated as you make it sound and it really helps "It is on!" reaction from the players when they see a class feature used. Plus it makes a lot of sense for enemies to be like this if the players are mostly fighting humanoid enemies.

Hmm, Multiple Sclerosis in D&D? I mean, it might be great if I run into psionic enemies. Elder Brain, enjoy crippling migraines, vertigo and assort nerve damage at random because f0k u that's why. Of course this also means my character would never go adventuring because see above so probably not.

Wait, allowing sin templates for PCs in a Pathfinder campaign? Yeah, no, those are for GMs to create thematic villains, not for power gamers to make their character even more broken. Plus, since their powers literally hinge on them really leaning hard into a particular sin, it runs the risk of turning them into one-note characters. I guess it’s not inherently a bad thing for PCs to have access to, but I’d be REALLY careful about who I’d let have it.

I think the disability story is fucking stupid. If the player can't do something doesn't mean your FANTASY HERO cannot do it. I set up a fun birthday thing for one of my players, it was her birthday so I carried that in game and made a fun birthday party session that included some fey pranksters and some riddles as part of the big reveal of the party. The players could not answer some of the riddles, what did I do? I allowed them to roll a d20 and add their intelligence modifiers setting a DC to see if maybe their characters snap their fingers and come up with the answers. Like just cause the player can't think of it doesn't mean that 18-20 hyper intelligence score can't think of it. Don't be that DM who punishes the character, cause at that point why did he even let OP play if he was just gonna punish him for it... fuck that DM

Using character creators to make monsters? Yeah no good. Too much information that is largely useless. Just take different *features* from the different classes and give them to your monsters if you want them to have "class levels." Like giving a bandit rage to make a Bandit Berserker. Or maybe giving them a Battle Master maneuver or two or even an Action Surge if you really want to scare the players. 5e just doesn't have as much support for giving NPCs class levels so you kinda have to jury rig it to do it.

I’m 100% sure you weren’t trying to be rude, but saying it’s their table and they know their skill level for a blind person is about equally as legitimate as saying that for, say, a gay person. The only thing where skill level is really involved is describing the settings, otherwise it’s just asking the person what they need-which is likely to be very little that’s different from any other person. Also (not from any comment of yours but since I haven’t seen it mentioned), can we end the idea that blind people constantly trip over things? It’s really about the same as anyone with site.
