Music can open doors. Literally. Here's a machine that shows how.
This Rube Goldberg machine took almost 1 year to build, and 2 weeks of intense troubleshooting and filming to finish. It's amazing what one crazy musician can build in his living room.
I wanted to show my students that you can make a pretty fancy machine out of cardboard and popsicle sticks, straws and dowels, found objects, duct tape, and perseverance. Et voila!
This video is dedicated to my last year's kindergarten class, Rm. 102, for whom I was originally building it. And to Jane, who can now have her living room back.
If you have any questions, I would be delighted to answer.
P.S. To buy the album, click one of the following links:

Here are the lyrics, at someone's request:
Science
(Ariel Llama)
The angels are taking flash photography
Of the mountain king
No, you shouldn’t think that it is electricity, no, no
The ionizing ozonating lightning isn’t frightening
No, it’s flattering to the slightly portly king
Oh, why do you require experimental proof?
Can’t you hear the leprechauns upon the roof?
Why do you continue this reliance
On the stultifying skeptitude of science
What do you achieve in refusing to believe
You leave no room for a horse to grow a horn
You squash the world of dreams
With the extremes of your scorn
The poodles are collecting in the garden
It is hard for them not to snap at all the falling Siamese
Oh yes, the iron-fisted reign of the mountain king
It is thundering
But the blustering only happens when he sneezes
(Is) that the only way you will believe in truth?
Objective lab results which can be reproduced?
Chorus

My almost-3 son loves watching Rube Goldberg machines on KZfaq and this one is one of our top 3! Great song, totally crazy machine, we love it! The green crocs really get me every time. Nice punctuation to all the craziness.

+doctrin8 Thanks! That's so lovely to hear. The crocs were actually a last-minute inspiration: I kept on having to put them on to go outside and reset the chair, and I could never figure out where to put them when I was done. Then something sparked. Do you know the work of Joseph Herscher? I imagine you've probably already checked him out, but he's got this great series called Jiwi's Machines that would be just perfect for your Rube Goldberg enthusiast.

Because that is how songs get into your head in the first place, by being heard several times over on a loop - and people WILL be playing this video at least several times to catch all the little steps & contraptions here...smart! :) clever marketing!

Thanks. For me it was more just a question of cross-pollination: I was already doing the Rube Goldberg machine, so why not combine it with one of my songs? And what song more perfect than Science, a song about the dangers of excessive skepticism.

Some 20 odd years ago there was a "program" (they weren't called "applications" by then) for DOS called TIM (The Incredible Machine) which was a simulator for weird physics stuff like this. Very difficult to syncronize as you were adding more and more "modules" like pendulae, domino stones, balls, etc. Now you did it in real life! Awesome!

There was this other program called Rocky's Boot which I used to love. You had to build a machine so that the mechanical boot would kick the right shapes out of a line-up. It worked using Boolean logic circuits.

Multiple stopwatched timing of the different sections helped with that. There was quite a bit of wiggle room, though, so I did in the end use a bit of time-stretch tweaking to make it fit. Sorry if that bursts your bubble. :)

Awesome! Loved every part - esp the battery rolling. Nice touch on the increase in battery sizes!
@ArielLlama
@ArielLlama 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I figured that would be a nice little "magic trick". It came about because that board that the batteries are on is all about measures: there's a ruler, measuring cups, a balance comparing the weight of a man and an elephant. I looked online for other forms of measure, and realized that I had neglected electricity. I thought the batteries were a nice shorthand for that, and in keeping with the theme.

I work as a schoolteacher, as it happens.Usually just as a substitute. Last year I taught Kindergarten full-time, and it was one of my students that inspired me to start building the machine. I was building it to show my class, but quickly realized I was in over my head, so I delayed until the summer, and then started building in earnest.

Thanks! It was crazy. It was about 9 months of my spare time, followed by two weeks of hell, but I was very pleased with the results. The music too, was a lot of time and effort, but I'm glad now at least some people are getting to hear it. I'm currently on the very early stages of building a new machine, but have little time to devote to it, so for now it's just a glimmer in my eye. Did buy some 1-inch ball-bearings the other day, however.

The sheer amount of parts to this machine is impressive, not even considering the musical timing and clever use of everyday objects. Combine that with an awesome song and I'm amazed it took me this long to see this! I found you from your comment on a Joseph's Machines video.
@ArielLlama
@ArielLlama 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm glad! Please spread the love. Just today I was loading some parts of the machine to take to a public school where I'm working, so that some students can have a chance to see them and (carefully) play with them. It's amazing how much space they took in the car. So I totally hear you on the parts. It's funny what you say about everyday objects, because I feel like Joseph is so much better in that regards. That's his thing. My thing is to build bizarre contraptions, because I love the building aspect of it. I love putting together a clever module. Have you seen the terrible video I made about my Rotating Severed Arm? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNZ8oMyomqilias.html Since then, I've motorized it with a hand-mixer. I'll have to post a video of it. Yeah, I couldn't have the band over for an entire week on the off chance that the machine eventually worked. I am going to do something like that (on a simpler scale) with another video, however.

Though really, if I'm looking for viral fame, what I should really do is make a Rube Goldberg machine composed entirely of cute puppies and kittens and pandas. That stuff always works.

@ArielLlama

Hi Jake, I first started the project when I was working full-time intensively. I quickly gave it up as untenable. Once work became more manageable, I restarted the project, and worked on evenings and weekends for about 9 months, building each little module separately, and then storing them where I could. At the end of that, I took a week off of work to film it, most of which was spent testing and retesting the machine. I had a crew of 6 people come for the big filming date, but the darn thing refused to work, rarely getting past the first section. So then I had to take another week off of work and slave away by myself. You can see a charting of all the frustration and failures here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMuBddagnNW6e2Q.html It finally worked on the Thursday of the second week, so that would be Day 13 of the 6 day film shoot. :) The main problem was that I hadn't been testing the machine adequately along the way. If you want a machine to work consistently, a good rule to follow is that each part has to work 20 out of 20 times. Otherwise the chance of the whole thing working is vanishingly small. How did you find my video, out of curiosity?

+cikif Yep. A couple of times I tripped over various things, and one time I knocked the marble timing tower that triggers the teeter-totter full of large balls. You can watch that, and all the other mess-ups here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMuBddagnNW6e2Q.html

You know, I'm not really competitive in this manner.I think both videos are worthwhile. I'm hearing from this that you enjoyed the video, but frankly, the Honda ad is so graceful, well-paced, and easy to understand. Mine is quite chaotic by comparison. Perhaps you could say mine has more personality or something like that, but that's the advantage of just being "some guy" who made a Rube Goldberg machine, as opposed to an advertising production crew that is appealing to a car manufacturer. Thanks for the vote of confidence, in any case.

Ariel Llama thought you might had to starve while the installation takes over and eventually restrict access to essential bodily functions... well done! love the car wheeling teapot.

Thomas Loh I know. Me too. It's definitely one of my favourite sounds and sights in the whole machine. I wish more of the machine looked like that. The awesome thing too is that I found the teapot and the wooden track on the same walk, when I was scrounging for found objects for the machine. I was carrying enough stuff that I needed a place to put the teapot, and the track seemed the natural spot. And then it started its beautiful sonic rolling. One of the best happy accidents of the whole machine.
