Same sex couples go into the church holding hands and people were waving Rainbow and Trans flags in front of the church. Some people stand outside of the church and pray Rosaries and other prayers. Last week I discovered a rainbow flag on my LinkedIn profile because one of my education institutions had changed their LinkedIn logo to a rainbow flag, so I deleted it and then after a couple of days of agonising, I wrote a long post about why I had deleted it (AND explained I was not a homophobe) including finishing with saying the only symbol which will save the world is the one below and posted a painting of the crucifixion. I was expecting a lot of blowback but had massive positive support with only a couple of the regular anti-Christian tropes. In retrospective, I shouldn't have made it about Christianity but I didn't want to change that once I had it out there. The most interesting comment was from someone who said they were an old gay man and basically their view was that the LGBT agenda was going too far and people would push back on it, eroding the liberties he now enjoyed.

And maybe you should lay off that little bit of narcisism if mere existence of other iconography offends you. You're right - you shouldn't have made it about christianity, because the universe doesn't orbit around it.

Yeah the only people I've met with the CSA flag are more of the States Rights types. Its completely absent of the racial content for them, ie a rebel flag to show pride for the fact that the CSA stood up to the federal government. You can imagine this is really in the context of heritage, individualism and localism. Others however have the racist angle with it, but they were of the much smaller, but probably more well highlighted group. So the bad apples spoil the bunch. I think something that is kind of forgotten here is that the US Bishops supported the CSA because it preserved mainly a much better understanding of what it's citizens rights and how people ought to be organized. At that time the Church was largely split on how to handle the slavery issue, at least from what I understand, with many Popes and Bishops condemning it, but then others more on the side of supporting it, but with a version with many restrictions, benefits, etc on behalf of the slave. I think the weird thing is that we as Americans graft our particular slavery on too every other type throughout history. Like the Chinook tribe had a form where a slave would replace a family member. Egyptians had the mass construction slavery type, and others in north Europe had a more servant slavery. Anyway, just my thoughts.

June is the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Word who comes in all humility to save us from our sins, the capital of which is pride. Aquinas on Pride (Summa Question 162): The root of pride consists in man not being subject to God and His rule. When it comes to pride, the cause of this aversion to God is not ignorance or weakness, but _contempt:_ "its act is the contempt of God." Hence pride can be called the first sin, for it adds _gravity_ to every sin: the element of intent to flout and reject God, and unwillingness to follow His rule. "The soul's evil is to be opposed to reason," says Dionysius, that is, to oppose the just order and proportion of things in reality. With pride man estimates himself _above_ what he is. He wishes to appear as _more_ than he is. He wants an excellence that exceeds right reason. He has an _inordinate_ desire for his own excellence. Gregory identifies four species of pride: 1) to think the good is _from oneself_ 2) to think the good from above, yet _merited by oneself_ 3) to boast of having what one doesn't have 4) to wish to be the exclusive possessor of what one does have The material part of the sin is to _convert to_ a mutable good, the formal aspect is to _avert from_ an immutable good. "While all vices flee from God, pride alone withstands God." Boethius "God resists the proud." James 4:6 "The beginning of man’s pride is to depart from the Lord; his heart has forsaken his Maker. For the beginning of pride is sin, and the man who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brought upon them extraordinary afflictions, and destroyed them utterly." Sirach 10:v14-15 See: www.newadvent.org/summa/3162.htm

In one of the Old churches in my hometown, there's a window with the Confederate flag and Union flag of the time period crossed together, to demonstrate unity after the Civil War. Comment Section, how would you feel about that display in 150+ year old Catholic Church?
@LostArchivist2 жыл бұрын
It sort of depends. If it has been there 150 years it is an old symbol of perhaps the community of that parish attempting to heal wounds post Civil War (or even in the Civil War but it seems unlikely that would have survived the war.), or of some people`s repentence. Or it could be the opposite of any of these. It may be a local compromise type of thing with some other group who maybe threatened violence. It may even be a reaction to those flying the Confederate flag. That symbol is rather ambiguous. It may be the only potentially acceptable form to find the Confederate symbolism these days, but even that is iffy. It comes down to why people have it there and what message they want to project. In a Catholic Church though IMHO is the last place such an ambiguous flag ought to be. But I will not pretend to understand it, its history, or the local culture, all of which are important in determining how acceptable a controversal symbol is. Can you tell me about any of these?
@exerciserelax87192 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that it was done with good intentions at the time, but I think it's historically misleading and sends the wrong message today. The Union and Confederacy didn't come to agreement on equal terms, the Confederacy was defeated. After that, the American flag should be the highest flag in the land, not represented as equal to any other flag. I don't think it does any good today to glorify the Confederate flag.
@kimfleury2 жыл бұрын
People wanted to heal relationships following the Civil War. Relationships are healed through forgiveness. Nobody who refuses to forgive gets into heaven, yet there are some who foment unforgiveness and discord. If you want to know what the image symbolizes, don't rely on the interpretation given by anyone who refuses to forgive.
@LostArchivist2 жыл бұрын
There are many grievous festering wounds here. If nothing else, remember every one of them no matter what happened to them or what they did, was loved by God and He called them to repentence. Pray for all those involved in that demonic circus and let us see this wound`s end, it certainly will be in Heaven. The Blood of Christ heals all wounds if we allow Him to. But we also can not pretend people were not treated like animals, tortured and murdered by the thousands and held in subjugation as property. No, we must face the whirlwind and know what it is in its fullness. There is no easy path to curing a cancer, it will require great sacrifice and a long painful path to recovery as we hack Agad to pieces. When sins of the father is mentioned in Sacred Scripture, I believe it refers to things such as this. Those who inherit it are not literallu guilty of the sin, but the evil is so great it requires several generations to see the effects of the poison run its course. The best thing to do, is bear our crosses and see this through to the end of its healing, knowing it is God and not necessarily us who know what that looks liks.
@Cklert2 жыл бұрын
@@exerciserelax8719 The unfortunate thing is that that is exactly what the Union wanted. The Union didn't want the former Confederacy to be viewed as a conquered or occupied state. They instead wanted them to welcome them back as equal (ish). This is why the Union allowed the south to make Confederate memorials and statues shortly after the war. However, the South was still very bitter about the war, and the "Radical Republicans" pushing Reconstruction policies were half measures and ended up in failures. It left the South's economy in further shambles and further resentment towards the Union as well basically emboldened them into more racial hate crimes. Perhaps if Union made stronger plans to industrialize the South, arm black citizens, and not try to hijack southern local politics through migrants. The South wouldn't be as polarized through the next century.

This may easily go wrong, but in the interest of clarity I'd like to point out that the word racism is used way too casually, way too indiscriminately, in instances where what is actually meant is more akin to terms such as "bias", "discrimination" or "bigotry". Racism refers specifically to *hatred* of another due primarily to their ethnic background. The other terms I mentioned are more accurate approximations the majority of time, as their usage can be based on any number of less extreme factors to explain a person's dislike of another. For example, it isn't racist to be tribalistic, unless one out and out *hates* all those who are not of his tribe simply for that reason, aside from any other. Rather, what tribalism is generally meant to describe is a preference and loyalty towards one's own group and a general wariness of those who differ from said group in any number of ways. Up to a certain point this is natural, normal and in accordance with the basic principle of self preservation. Is it also an example of bias? Yes, of course. Discrimination? Again, yes. Bigotry? Sure. Do any of those terms describe a situation where *hatred* is the determining factor? No. This is why the accusation of racism should necessarily be reserved for extreme examples of prejudicial behavior, and not thrown around like confetti as is currently the case. One last point: Cain and Abel were the same blood. We have to remember that as bad as racism is, there's worse evils to guard against.

Racism in on itself is a bias. You're actually offended that it's used properly? No, it doesn't have to be hatred. In fact, even most agrigious defenders of racist policies had no personal quarrels against other races. Same with modern liars, making stories about white race suffering from some sort of invasion. What you propose is an Orwellian engeneering of language that effectively removes "racism" frrom conversation, from which only racists benefit. Moving on, Racism and all other forms of bigotry ARE based on tribalism, it's their core. It's their nature to be against those who aren't like you. It's our nature in general. Not being bigot means to overcome that habit. Talk about xenophobia in general - same issue. And it taps into same sentimesnts.

@@ironymatt "that's a pretty vague and wide-ranging definition" Wide-ranging maybe, but it's not vague. If you have a thought or belief that is influenced by race, then it is a racist thought or belief. "and for a vast multitude of reasons it could be found to apply to amost anyone on any given day," Not really. Misconceptions about the other are common, nearly universal. But often these ideas are often either addressed or they're so niche that they're usually harmless. "What's lacking is the moral component. By your view, can it be said that there's anything actually wrong with racism?" Racism is a thought, it is morally irresponsible to allow wrong ideas to continue. But like many things the harm comes in how it affects your actions and the broader world. I once met an elderly German woman who for whatever reason had gotten the idea that Mexicans loved the color purple.(True story) and while that's is an incorrect perception, it's not malicious and is akin to any other misperception that might happen spontaneously between groups. So while I would consider that a racist(or nationalist) belief, I have no idea how seriously she took that idea nor do I see it as having the possibility of mistreatment. So I wouldn't be eager to call it immoral. But that is different than other unprejudiced racist ideas that do have negative impact. In France there is a racist belief that Asian people are richer. This isn't true much of the time and it's not a prejudiced idea, but it does lead to people ignoring the mistreatment that Asian people sometimes experience in France and it also leads to more unprompted attacked of Asian people by muggers who are operating under the assumption that their victims have money. An idea without prejudice or ill-intent therefore has caused harm. Hence why it is immoral.

Hypocracy and the teachings of the evil lies of sin as inconsequential by far to much of the Magisterium is an issue that I've struggled with for decades. It's really been hard to participate in the church when so much of the leadership openly promotes sin. The Laity who are truly trying to walk in Christ find it so difficult to understand how so much of the Magisterium are lost in lies that contradict the Gospel truth. We need apologists of high moral character to start defending the faith against the evil within the Church just as much as we do the same against evil religions outside the faith. @@GiftofChaosStudio with respect, I do not agree. Christianity is not against having desires, rather it calls us to ensure that our desires are properly ordered in the light of Jesus. It very often ends up being the enemies of Christ who begrudge others for their property. I don't know where you get the idea that having the spirit of poverty is "a justification for rich people". That actually sounds like you've got an axe to grind regarding rich people, and would be a manifestation of coveting. A prayer for the spirit of poverty is one of the petitions in the Rosary, for the third joyous mystery, and it's meaning is mainly about gratitude to God for all his gifts and is largely in accord with what you said to @Computational Theist, which there's nothing wrong with (although 'live in their means' is a nebulous, relativistic term that too easily can be used as a cudgel by communist types and should be avoided). @ Gender is not a moral category, the idea that something can become immoral by virtue of changing the gender of the person doing it is absurd and a cultural peculiarity. And I do mean peculiar, the world we live in where homophobia is present around the world is a result of centuries of European influence. You can not look into the histories of any people or place on this earth without finding a period where same sex relationships were common and acknowledged in one form or another. Many places even had specific language that was used to describe Queer people which predates the advent of European prejudice. And given how the nuclear family is modern and highly limiting the simple fact is that Queer people have always been involved in the raising of children.
