Lorelai had wealth and a lot of opportunities and she gave that all up for freedom. Rory had EVERYTHING Lorelai had and more; support from an entire town, loving grandparents, good education, a supportive mother, and she even had freedom. And the only reason she gave it up wasn't because she had something to fight for like Lorelai did, but because she was discouraged by Mitchum. If she really did have it, she would've gotten back on her feet and proven him wrong but she cried to her grandparents.

Exactly. Chilton Rory was determined to challenge herself in every field. I think her downfall is mostly because the power of money poisoned her. Maybe Lorelei should have never asked her parents for money. Rory was clearly a humble and way better person before entering that world. She could have been a journalist even without having to go to an Ivy league. But she was too coddled
@Notmytoe8 ай бұрын
@@eleanorkim0390ohh that makes sense. It's interesting that the very first episode of the show is about Lorelai asking her parents for money, because she thought it would help Rory's future. The money eventually is exactly what caused her downfall. If she had remained at her old school and went to a slightly less prestigeous college, she would have been surrounded with people like Lane and Jess who would keep her grounded.

miek chen I did not like Jess in the beginning while I watched the series when it aired but after I rewatched it, Jess is definitely her best boyfriend. He challenged her and didn’t want her to change but to be true to herself. I think Logan and his friends were her downfall. In the Year in the Life, she regressed. She turned into the spoiled teenager she never was but she was in her 30’s. I felt like every character was a shadow of themselves and instead of quirkinesses, being mean was supposed to be funny.

She'd be just like her grandparents, loving luxury and that lifestyle, as we've seen especially when she dropped out, and that lifestyle would've just skipped a generation (her mum). I'd feel for her mum, because she has worked her butt off to get where she is, without her parents. When it came to money it was always for Rory (tuition from her parents, and the money from Rory's dad). On the other hand, I kind of liked that her life was a complete mess at some point, bc some people are just only school smart, but it was just too much. I think Rory's story is actually perfectly realistic. What happens to Rory is what happens to many gifted kids when they fail. Intelligent people do not know how to cope with failure because they have performed so well through their lives that they simply cannot comprehend the situation. The concept of failure is alien to their minds. I find her short Yale dropout and her story in the revival to be realistic. She simply is unable to deal with her failure and expects to be handed everything. Through the whole show, everyone bombards Rory with comments about her greatness. She cannot comprehend being inferior because her entire life she has heard she is superior. Just my opinion.

Exactly, Rory's downfall is like a warning. As a "gifted" kid myself, I've been watching my life falling apart since I started college, because I been failing, and I never knew failure. What made it so frustrating for me is the fact that her mother never put her in her place. When it came to the affair, when it came to how horrible she was treating Dean while at the same time pursuing Jess, and then in the revival not really saying anything about her second affair, and then being ok and even making jokes about her treating her sweet considerate boyfriend like crap. Lorelai acting like a real mother (at least when it's important) would have made a real difference for me throughout all of Rory's bad decisions. Also in the revival...her constantly pretending to be broke? She had a trust fund, I'm sure her grandfather left her a significant amount in his will, she has a millionaire father that keeps trying to throw money at her, her grandmother, and a millionaire lover. Lorelai has never told rory off or made her pay for her mistakes. When she and Jess got into an accident, she screamed at luke about Jess but rory was not to be blamed. And when she stopped out of yale, she left rory alone to figure it out but the minute rory decides to go back to take, Lorelai runs and hugs her and all is well, no one is upset, rory never has to make up for anything or earn anyone's trust. Lorelai never reprimanded her for stealing the boat or stringing along a boyfriend or cheating on him with Logan or having a one night stand. Rory gets what she wants and it's always someone else's fault.

I feel like the show was about generational curses/patterns/cycles . Rory ended just like her mom a single mother with a kid that will probably have a not so present father figure. She will probably pressure her child to have a good career just like Lorelai did to Rory since they never got to have that. Rory is such a mess she will probably need help financially from her mother as she's 30 living with her mom just like Lorely needed help from her own parents. Rory is a pathetic version of her mother. Lane also ends up like her mother. Her religious roots make her repress her sexuality and she ends up pregnant the first time with no desire of having sex again just like Ms Kim. I wouldn't be surprised if just like Lane's dad, Zach was always away as we don't see him in the reboot. Lane ends up a less uptight version of her mom. Edit: Same can be said for Dean. He wanted to be like his parents and have a traditional houselode. His relationship with Rory proved to him that there were other options, but he still ended up married at 18 working hard to buy a townhouse for his housewife and their future kids. We don't really know what happened to him after that, but we know he ends up with the wife and kids just like he always wanted probably in a traditional marriage. Same goes for Jess. At first he was going to be a bum like his dad, but Luke became his father figure and now he resembles Luke way more. He is an independant bachelor that has his shit together, but is still and probably will always remain in love with a Gilmore.

The director of the series actually said that in an interview she wanted the series to end the way it started. To show that kids make the parent's mistakes. Hi! I'm new to the show, now through S3. I find the character selfish and spoiled from the very beginning. When she has the accident with the deer, Lorelei shouts at Mr Charleston and demands special treatment to her daughter. Why? Coudn't she handle the consequences of an accident? It was not her fault, but the rules of the school were supposed to be the same for everyone. She always has her mother or her grandparents to solve her problems, so it's kind of expectable she doesn't take responsability for anything, never. She goes to NY to see Jess and misses her mother's graduation (?) and then kisses Jess while still dating Dean. The main aspects of this character people complain seeing in the Revival could be seen at the very beginning of the series.

My mom and I are best friends. She was 32 when she got pregnant... I respect her more than anything, when I make a mistake I do respect and fully understand her authority. The problem isn’t being best friends with your parent. The problem is not understanding that they are your parents above everything else. Lorelai’s biggest mistake when raising Rory was putting the best friend relationship above the mother-daughter relationship. You don’t have to be a Mrs Kim, but being a Lorelai isn’t the right call either. My mom means the world to me, I have never and will never disrespect her authority. Mrs Kim never knew what was going on with Lane. She never knew her own daughter’s taste in music, the boys she was interested in, her aspirations, her hobbies, simply because Lane couldn’t talk to her. You must be able to talk to your parents. Lane could be depressed and she wouldn’t know. Lane could be suicidal and she wouldn’t know. Lane got drunk and she never knew, if Lane did drugs or had sex as a teenager, she wouldn’t know. The show's creator left after the first several seasons, then came back at the end and for the mini-series. What got lost was the original point of contention -- Lorelai's relationship with her mother compared to hers with her daughter. Rory wasn't meant to be the main character, it was always Lorelai. The will-they-or-won't-they was between Lorelai and Emily, not any boy or man. The new writers completely missed that. And it's fine to have a character behave in an unusual way, but CALL THEM OUT. That 70's Show did a better job with Mila Kunis's character, and made Jackie great to watch. She was horrible, but you still loved her because she got called out and showed hints that someday she would grow out of it. It's such a bummer when good actors get hamstrung by lame storylines.

Her relationship with Logan in the revival made Absolutely NO sense- Unless all she wants to be is the side piece, and string another innocent guy along for the ride as her goal in life for partnership. Has she not learned anything in her earlier years? She has her cake and eats it too. Sad and very disappointing.

Ended up changing course after finishing my degree to chemistry instead of biotech. And who got a great scholarship for a PhD now and speaks two additional languages because they dared to move abroad? Guess I needed that Professor to make me question myself. I think it was really important that Rory got to explore that “bad girl” side of her and that Logan was there to let her do her thing and don’t hold her back or question her as everyone else was doing. I think she had been dealing with such high expectations and pressure (regarding school) all her life that when Mitchum said that to her she herself couldn’t recognize herself anymore, so she needed that outlet, she needed to find out who she wasn’t, what she has supposedly been missing, to find out who she actually was and who she wanted to be. However, I do feel that she never got out of that state of mind and what was supposed to just be a phase that helped her find her true self and grow just developed into her full personality and was never again able to grow past it. Her privilege didn’t let her suffer the consequences of her actions and each time she messed up, she was left unscathed which fed into that entitled bratty persona we saw in the revival. I find it so ironic that her mom messed her up by not messing her up lol.

Part of me cant help but wonder if she also just burnt out. Coming out of high school she had this one singular short sighted unhealthy obsession with a dream of going to a particular school - she worked herself to the bone to get there and its possible that once she arrived, she lost the motivation and energy to make it all the way through to her dream career. I see it happen to a lot of people actually - working so tirelessly to keep up a perfect appearance and after a certain breaking point no longer having the energy to be nice and keep up appearances, so you become lazy and a horrible person and you begin to think it's your time to take rather than continue to give.

This is the comment I was looking for. I really related to Rory in many aspects (not the cheating), and while she is deeply flawed, I think that's what made her human. I was also raised in a way I thought I was exceptionally special and indeed was an overachiever in HS... I also changed schools to one we couldn't really afford so I could try to get in a "better" university... I understand where Rory is coming from and the fact that she never really faces any consequences the right way just fuels her entitlement. She's definitely burnt out but too stubborn to admit it. I hope more people realize this and take is a tale of caution instead of just demeaning her character because she stopped being "relatable."

Yeah but this is the thing you gotta understand. Rory Was the best in chilton, but in yale there are hundreds of best other students who worked their asses (and the money of their parents) as well. You need to keep going. Its a fault of the system but if you decide you want in, you have to Stick to it. At least to earn something for your living. Rory never understood that. But this is something... I mean, Rory's downfall it's absolutely interesting. It's a progression of a character who fell into her own shadows. It's not something that usual to see in heroines and protagonists; but it's interesting how this can bring us some reflection. We can also assume that she was spoiled, but the thing is that she also agreed to be spoiled... This leads us to a certain thought- Do we have this choice: to surrender to our own shadows or fighting against it? It's under our control? I find Rory's downfall highly philosophical!

Some people still claim Palladino´s choices regarding Rory´s development gave her character a lot of realism and plausibility. To me, Rory´s arc is definetly one of the most disappointing I´ve seen for any tv character ever. There were a thousand of other approaches that Palladino could´ve taken if she wanted to make her characters realistic. That´s why Rory´s crisis in season 6 was very relatable and smart but what they did to her in A Year in the Life was just DISGRACEFUL. And NO realistic but forced to almost tragic levels. Palladino ruined her own creation, and don´t get me started on other characters like Lorelai, Luke or even Logan. I would´ve prefered to keep the original ending. Season 7 was no doubt the worst GG season, but at least it provided us with an open yet proper conclusion for the characters. The reunion was a huge mistake. Still don´t believe how much an author can literally destroy their own work.

Here's the thing: Rory never had a downfall. She was always a spoiled brat. The very first episode, she has applied to a school that's a half hour away and charges a ridiculous tuition because she doesn't think that her own high school is a good enough alma mater to have as an applicant to Harvard, without even considering how she'll get there or pay for it. She gets in, and the second her stupid dream comes true, she decides to throw it to the wayside for a boy she doesn't know, and whom she could get to know while going to her overpriced far away school. When her mother confronts her about it, she storms away rather than admit that she's being stupid or try to defend her stupidity. This is how they start the show. She definitely gets worse over the years, especially after Yale, but she doesn't start off as an aspirational character. She's always been entitled. She just finds herself entitled to different things over the years.

I think the worst part about Rory sleeping with Dean while he was married was at the end of the day, she didn't even truly want him. She just wanted SOMETHING, which I guess she sort of found in Logan after, but the affair I think showed how selfish Rory was because she wasn't even doing it out of true love - sure Dean loved her and she might have had some love for him, but she never intended to truly be with him, meaning him divorcing his wife to be with her, I think she was just lost and everything felt messy so she used Dean to take her back to when her life was so much simpler and easier, because he was familiar. He was from a time when everything was all figured out. But she wasn't in love with him. They weren't soulmates torn apart, coming back together, they were a guy clinging on to a girl he never got over who only wanted to escape to her past.

I think that the big problem with the Year in life is that it was meant to be the plot of season 7, so it should’ve taken place when Rory was still in her early twenties and recently graduated, which would make it less pathetic and just plain sad. Like honestly I don’t think Rory ever had it in her to become the next Christiane Amanpour (which may I add Jess suggested early on), but if she would’ve had this life crisis in her early twenties and then switched to being an author instead of a journalist (and may I add again, as Jess suggested) her career would not have felt like a big failure like it does now. But also just look at Rory’s upbringing: she was never short of anything she wanted, despite her and her mother being “poor” (as if) and she was praised by everyone around her, literally by an entire town, as if she was some prodigy child genius. Rory was hardworking and probably fairly smart, but I don’t think she was ever anything too spectacular in the big scheme, and going to an Ivy-league school, she had to realise she was just as smart as the next kid. And that’s basically when her downfall began, when she had to leave Stars-hallow and step into the real world, which as it happens, didn’t revolve around her.
@stuffwithsoph82643 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I hate how she got valedictorian over Paris who is just as smart and did way more extra volunteer work etc and was the student council president!
@Megan-xg4ui4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with this but also I feel like Rory was spoiled from the beginning. She gets into Chilton with no plan or thought as to how her mother was going to pay for it. There's nothing wrong with her wanting to go to Chilton, but you would think since she's supposed to be "poor" she would at least put effort into applying for scholarships, etc. Then while she's at Chilton, everything that goes wrong for her automatically gets fixed by her teachers, grandparents, etc. Like when she got in trouble for sneaking into the school for that sorority thing, she yelled at the headmaster until he completely let her off the hook. Also Dean was an absolutely perfect boyfriend for her, and even though I actually really liked Jess, she treated Dean horribly and should have ended it with him as soon as she realized she had feelings for Jess. Basically, she gets everything she wants throughout the whole show while everyone in her life is constantly praising her for being perfect.

@Mia Smith exactly!! throughout the show she always goes to jess when she's upset and he always is there for her and yet she just leaves everytime. after logan cheated on her, she went to jess's job, kissed him, and then said she's in love with logan and left again. she treats everyone in her life like shit and acts like the world revolves around her

I agree that it's realistic for Rory to turn out as entitled and selfish as she did, but she was still the show's moral compass at the start of the series. If the writers had framed her increasingly bratty behavior properly and explored the corrupting influence of privilege, she could have been a great antihero.

Hear me out: I don't think Rory sleeping with Dean while he was married was a poor writing decision. It was somewhat out of character but kind of brilliant for what it revealed about her (selfishness, entitlement), not only to us as an audience but to Rory herself. It is still within the realm of relatability. Unfortunately, like you said, and I agree 100% that it WASN'T used to progress her character. She doesn't learn from it or pay any consequences. IMAGINE how great of a plot point it could've been if it was the catalyst to a major change in her character, positive or destructive. I wonder if Jared Padalecki's acting schedule had anything to do with the abandonment of this thread altogether.

@malikabernard9664 жыл бұрын
I agree. Obviously from a moral point of view sleeping with a married man is wrong, but from a writing standpoint I think Rory sleeping with Dean while he was married was good for insight into her character and it could of led to her maturing or taking a look at a really ugly side of herself. If the writers wanted to take this risk with the shows most beloved character then there has to be a really good pay off or at least an interesting one. Instead, there were no repercussions and no growth for Rory. Sure she was confronted about what she did and she felt guilty, but there’s no character development beyond that. Rory continues to date Dean until she becomes interested in someone else and Dean feels that he’ll never be good enough to fit into her world. Ultimately, that plot point was was interesting, but it had a terrible payoff. It all just felt pointless.

I think of Rory as kind of a tragic character anymore. Her mother built up such high expectations for her and Rory had to grow up with the guilt that her own existence kept her most beloved person from achieving her dreams (meaning Lorelai's fallen hopes after becoming pregnant with Rory and dropping out of high school). She worked tirelessly to make her mother's hopes come true. Then the pressure of her grandparents and being caught in the middle of a war between rich vs poor, mother vs grandparents, independence vs depending on others...These things chipped away at her. Not to mention, her mother is extremely cynical and flat out judgmental and mean. I'm saying this with a certain amount of love for Lorelai because she is super charming, but my goodness that woman was harsh. But, then there's the foundation to the problem: Rory growing up without her father. Some mothers can make it work, of course, but considering Lorelai would've been so young AND she left her parents, Rory had no consistent male presence in her life to guide in how to relate to a man. Plus, my mother has a Master's in psychology and one of the most consistent things she has studied is that for a girl, her self worth is learned and soooo dependent on the presence of a good father. I believe that all of the selfworth Rory had was entirely superficial because the things her mother and grandparents praised her for were simply things she was doing as an avatar of her mother. She had NO self worth, which is why her relationship with men was so toxic. She talks about Dean being such a great, dependable 1st boyfriend but she uses that as an excuse to get walked all over by him when he acts entirely dogmatic. Her relationship with Logan always betrays her true self as a self-destructive, hurt person who would allow a rich, sexy player yank her around for the few moments of "good" in their relationship, especially since he is never critical with her and encourages the worst in her. But the one person who was critical yet unconditionally loving towards her, Jess, was not good enough because of her lack of ability to accept a real, stable relationship with a man who will be there through the good and bad. And I'm not saying they shouldn't have broken up, because he needed the growth that came afterwards. But, Rory never learned responsibility, which is why she could entangle herself with Jess while dating Dean, date Jess and then pine for Dean, and then be upset when Jess leaves, and eventually leading into a completely self-serving affair with Dean. These relationship patterns for her are so toxic to herself and to me define what she becomes...toxic and irresponsible to the point that the pedestal her mother and grandparents placed her on shatters and they have no idea how to help her recover. Her life flattens from here on and she continues to be second fiddle to the epic story that is Logan's life because she doesn't ever strive to deserve more. In these things, she is a very complicated and sad character. If these things were intentionally done, WOW! If not, it makes it more sad to me.

Tbh rory’s character arc makes complete sense. When she was younger with Lorelai, she didn’t have her rich grandparents to fall back on or depend on for money. She was more mature when she was younger because it was just her and Lorelai and Lorelai was always the immature one so it was up to Rory to be the voice of reason. Her descent into entitlement truly begins when she gets closer to her grandparents and they start paying for everything. She gets comfortable asking them for money or help whenever she needs it and as a result expects everything in life work out for her while holding this sense of entitlement Also her romantic relationships make sense . She’s grown up seeing her mother (Lorelai) treat men like shit and not caring about them or their feelings. So in a way it makes complete sense.
@GeometricMason4 жыл бұрын
Here's what I think: bad Rory is reality and good Rory is fiction. Because after all, let's not forget in a very Louisa May Alcott move, it is revealed in the Netflix series that Rory has written a book titled "The Gilmore Girls" (and Lorelai tells her to "drop the The") So in her book Rory TRIES to paint herself in a good light, or maybe who she thought of herself at the time, BUT couldn't change major life events like not saying "I love you" back to Dean, dumping Dean for Jess, losing her virginity to married Dean, dumping him for Logan, etc. etc. So good Rory is fictional in the early chapters of the book, but in later chapters Rory realizes she has to write the truth which is that she's horrible.

I agree, good Rory is fiction. But bad Rory partly, too. That story with her and Logan and his friends, that felt so artificial. Why liked Logan her? He seems so superficial. Rorys charakter doesn't fit into that combo. I always thought about the good Rory, that the story is written by a single mom, who wished that to happen, at least the first three series.

I agree. There was no downfall. Rory's development makes sense. She was always very sheltered by her mom and grandparents, she could not deal with failure. She was never going to "make it" as a journalist. She had to go out there and fail first to realize she has to find her own path instead of following the plan her 15 year old self made. It hurts to see it but it is very realistic, which is why this show is so good.

In the revival, the grandfather passed away, so he must have left some money, however little amount, to Lorelai and Rory...or Emily would have offered to help out her granddaughter as she has all the money and not much desire to spend it...

Yesssssss She was supposed to get a trust fund at 25 but the real problem is the whole storyline was all over the place they both felt entitled anything couldn’t handle rejection didn’t even know how to handle the men in their life I couldn’t stop lying but say that they’re honest this show is nothing but a big contradiction I fell in love with the show and then as I look back I wish everybody a smack their self in the head because no one grew up but Jess

I couldnt stand how she reacted with the whole love triangle thing with dean and jess. She acted like she was the victim of it all. Then when she slept with a married man? Especially with a man that she hurt countless times? And once again acting like the victim. I loved the first few episodes of rory. Yes she was entitled as far as thinking her little high school wasnt enough for Harvard (as others have said), but I dont think that ruined her. I totally agree with the video, and I'm glad to see it cuz no one i know watched the show and i cant complain 😂

I agree with you except on the first part. Didn't Rory actually feel guilty for how she treated Dean leading up to their first breakup? It was the last time she ever showed genuine remorse IMO

She’s more relatable because her life became more realistic, in terms of her flaws. There is no such thing as a perfect kid with her mother as her best friend, that was extremely unrelatable. But a constant f-up is much more relatable!

She also handled the aftermath of kissing Jess SO poorly. She kisses him, tells him not to say anything, leaves on a trip and doesn't contact him at all, and then gets mad he's with someone else? She was pretty selfish in that situation as well, which is so weird because in every other aspect of her life she was so considerate of others up until that point. Honestly, it was super satisfying to see Jess glow up in comparison.

Stringing Dean along when she liked Jess was the start of her downfall. She ruined a marriage, then she didn’t even end up lasting with Dean. But when she gets one bad comment about her not having what it takes to be a journalist, she gets arrested and drops out of Yale. You can tell she was a spoiled brat. Having her town all love her and think she is so wonderful, plus never having to be punished, getting whatever she wanted from someone in her life. When she dated Logan is when I really didn’t like her. She got worse when she was dating him.
