Getting way less time to practice and work with your teammates is a big deal, not to mention the risk of injury. Shaq was well known at the time as he was an First Team All American in 1991 and 1992 and the college basketball player of the year in 1991. The difference was that Duke with Laettner won back to back championships and Laettner made some clutch shots and he won the player of the year in 1992. It looks silly now if you factor in their professional careers but back then Laettner was considered the better college player.
@smoothbro97115 жыл бұрын
Beantowner remember during the olympics one game the USA team won but they played so sloppy the dream team had a practice when they played each other and magic told mike “ you can have the college kid we don’t want him “ imagine if Shaq was selected instead of Lattener I could hear magic tell Michael “ we got the big fellow ha ha ha
@cameronl18594 жыл бұрын
Shaq was very well known. Laettner was chosen because he had just won 2 championships (with a clutch shot in 1 of them) and was older. In the end, neither of them (being very young) would have got many minutes over Ewing and Robinson who were both in their prime. Wouldn't have changed much. But, Shaq was probably the better athlete vs Laettner even in 92.

@@drewmalesky9869 No, Europe is not getting better simply because you see so many eu players in the NBA now. 90s Europe had more talent and if the Croatian and Yugoslavian teams (didn't participate that year because of the UN) competed today in EU basketball they would dominate everyone easily. Its just that the original Dream Team was THAT good. And yes, the reason you see so many EU players in the NBA right now is precisely because of that: there are no Magic Johnsons and Jordans anymore in the NBA and every mediocre European can play there (back then it was only the best of the best like Divac, Kukoc, Petrovic or late Sabonis). Hey there soccer legend Johan Cryuff just died today. So please do a video on him, he is the man that single handedly revolutionize soccer to the way we know it today and it is warm my heart a thousand times over if you did a video on him.

bird and johnson were in the twilight of their careers, hell they were both retired i think. to see them both play with this much vigor and competitiveness, i can't image what they were like in their primes. legends. the game will never forget.

a the 7:30 mark you see John Stockton's wife and one of his kids in the stands, but the announcer doesn't know that's a family member of one of the dream team members. This is even more hilarious because during the same Olympics we saw John Stockton walk around and get interviewed by US outlets thinking he was also just an American fan.

What's really great is that they didn't merely win in dominant fashion. They gave the world a taste of what could be done with a basketball, and in so doing they elevated the entire game. Players all over the world had their games changed for the better as a result of playing this team.

To think the USA actually voted against the proposal of allowing pro's into the games. Also this team is as close to perfect as you could get in international sport.
