omg my 25 year old daughter let me see her playlist and even when she was a teenager, she had Sam Cooke on her playlist and Led Belly from the 30s. wow, I really fell so hard to Sam Cooke and his smooth style and was so saddened to learn how young he died. What a legend :-(

@@moonchild848 Sam Cooke & Lead Belly? Now that is great taste in music. Lead Belly is the reason I bought my first 12 string guitar. We didn't get much Blues in Scotland so when we discovered this stuff it literally rocked our world.

The last dance of the night used to be important. always a slow dance, and you didn't dance it with just anyone. If you had a partner, it was for them, if you'd just met a potential new partner, them asking for and you accepting to dance the last dance together was a STEP you both noticed and all your friends did too. and that other person that wasn't asked/didn't get accepted.

Your right. It was a given at the end of the night. It was for the special person in your life. Or potential special person. Yes, we did save the last dance.

It's a million years ago now, but I seem to dimly recall quite a bit of scrambling going on towards the end of the evening, as everyone tried to position themselves - a) by the girls, to be near, and noticed by the guy you hoped would ask you for that all-important last dance, and b) by the guys, to make sure they were near enough to get in first to ask the girl they hoped to take home to dance... and maybe get the thrill of a kiss and cuddle later on her doorstep, before heading off into the night, taking the bus or the long hike back home... :-)

OH MY, K LM...you bringing all those thrills back!! YES we were schmoozing, flirting, plotting and planning...from the time we walked in! Smilin', glancin', dreamin' and fantasizin!!!! We knew there was only so much time....the game was on. We were so hoping to complete and not fumble. That Last Dance....was BIG TIME IMPORTANT! Even Now, in just 2 hours....I'll be on a dancefloor tonight...95% of the dancers around me will be 18 to 30...mostly kids, my grand-childrens ages. And I see the SAME things going on. Oh My...what a WONDERFUL part of life. Goldeneye and PaperCup are right on!

Ben E. King, who later did "Stand by Me", is the lead vocalist on this record. When you reacted to "Stand by Me", I suspect that many of us suggested The Drifters. Two other great Drifters songs with King on vocals are "There Goes My Baby" and "This Magic Moment". Two fine Drifters songs that came after King left them are "On Broadway" and "Under the Boardwalk".

You need some background on this song. Doc Pomus wrote this song, he had polio and could not dance. He married a Broadway dancer and at their wedding she danced with all their guests while Doc sat at the head table and watched. On a napkin he wrote save the last dance for me and handed it to his new wife. When they returned from their honeymoon he wrote this song. Doc also wrote “This Magic Moment” for the Drifters. Both songs are incredible. Now you know the backstory.

Doc Pomus urged his beautiful bride, Willi Burke, to dance at their 1957 wedding. He watched as she whirled around the floor in the arms of relatives and friends. But she and Doc never danced. He was on crutches, having lost the use of his legs after a childhood bout with polio. Doc (born Jerome Felder) grew up in Brooklyn, New York, loving music, especially the blues. As a young man, he made a living singing in Black blues clubs. After recording dozens of songs, he thought he finally had a hit. But the record company didn’t release the song after learning he was a disabled Jewish guy. Doc shifted to songwriting, penning such hits as “Viva Las Vegas,” “This Magic Moment” and “A Teenager in Love.” Some three years after his marriage, Doc was scribbling lyrics on the back of unused wedding invitations, trying to match words to a soaring Latin melody composed by his partner Mort Shuman. Doc remembered how it felt to watch his bride dance with someone else. “But don’t forget who’s taking you home and in whose arms you’re going to be,” he wrote. “So, darling, save the last dance for me.” The Drifters recorded “Save the Last Dance for Me” in 1960, and it spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart. Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris would later cover the song born of Doc’s selfless love and determination.

Exploring the music of the greats from the black community in days gone by would be a massive education, if that's not something you've explored yet. Had it not been for African-American bands and singers, there'd be no Beatles, no Rolling Stones, and no pretty much any other popular music act you could name of the last 60 years... They all owed everything to the intoxicating rhythms, and the heart-felt emotional expressions found in the blues, that Americans of African heritage brought to the world. Going right back to the Mississippi Delta blues, and some old guy on his back porch, playing on a beat up $5 guitar, with one tiny microphone and a reel to reel tape recorder...

The drifters had a literal revolving door of singers. Clyde mcphatter was the original lead singer( check out. a lovers question) and within a year or 2 the entire band was put out and new guys came in. Ben E King was the lead. He left to go solo of which stand by me was one of the biggest hits all time. It's definitely hard to remember all the names with that rotating door of singers. The Dell Vikings were that way too, but for a different reason, they were a do wop group that were all air force guys stationed in New Mexico. One of their songs is a classic...whispering bells. Also it was one of the first biracial group. They had white and black guys in the group.

The Miracles, aka Smokey Robinson and The Miracles "Tears Of A Clown" is one of theirs that you really want to listen to. Cowritten by Hank Cosby, "Little" Stevie Wonder and Smokey himself it was originally recorded and released in 1967 and remains one of Motown's biggest hits. The musicians that play on "Tears of A Clown" were known collectively as "The Funk Brothers", some of the most well known musicians that "nobody has ever heard of". Here's something about one of them that might interest you. The bass guitar on TOAC is a chap by the name of James Jamerson. He is perhaps the most influential bass player that has ever lived. Not kidding, not hyperbole in the least. James Jamerson played on more number one hit records that The Beatle, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Combined. In fact Jamerson played on 95% of the tracks that The Jacksons ever recorded for Motown, not just "the hits". James Jamerson is cited as a major influence by bassists from literally ever genre including John Entwistle (The Who), Paul McCartney (The Beatles). Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Chris Squire (Yes), Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report), Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Geddy Lee (Rush), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Stanley Clarke (Return To Forever) and literally countless others.

I have always enjoyed this song. In terms of the lyrics I never really saw it as the lyricist telling his woman what she could do. Rather, I saw it as the lyricist sending a message to other men that women have agency and can have fun without hurting the often fragile male ego. Kinda a modernization of female expectations at the time.

There's actually a bit more to the song. It was written by Doc Pomus to commemorate his wedding. Pomus had polio and was in a wheelchair and his wife was a broadway dancer. So this is basically about him not being able to dance with her on their wedding.

Nice! The subdued tango rhythm infuses this song with a south of the border old time cantina feel. The Drifters "Some Kind of Wonderful" inspired many artists over the years too. Check it out when you can. Smokey Robinson scored his first big hit -- and the first million-selling hit for the Motown label -- with "Shop Around" in 1961. His biggest hit was "The Tears Of A Clown" in 1970. His other hits include "The Tracks Of My Tears", "I Second That Emotion", "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Going to a Go-Go" and "Ooo Baby Baby". You definitely should react to his work a.s.a.p.

👏🏽 Yes one of the best group founded in the 50’s. Under The Boardwalk On The Boardwalk There Goes My Baby and many more Smokey Robinson was with the Miracles.
