@Gary R Yes, Google articles have been leading me very astray with just who sang what. With what was actually The Drifters, what was Ben's after he left. What was The Drifters when he was replaced by that other great singer (forget his name momentarily) Suffice is to say that pretty well any song that came from ANYONE that touched that group is phenomenal

If you like “that old sound” you might check out The Flamingos ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ a truly beautiful love song. Also, The Platters go back to the late 50’s to early 60’s. The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes ( a cover to a I think a thirties hit) are just as great.

Little brother those guys were the shit back in the day. At 66 this is another reason our music was way better then nowadays. Try the Stylistics, The Delfonics And the Chi-Lites. Go down that rabbit hole. Once upon a time the radio stations played everything instead of just one type of music.

My first experience with music was listening to the radio that my parents put in my room when I was about 2-3 years old (1958..1959.) And this was the sort of music that was playing. I loved it. I also really liked the 'MoTown' sound that became popular in the 1960s. And still do. My two favorite songs by the Drifters are this one, and 'Save The Last Dance For Me.'

Awesome pic! My mom had this record and we listened to it all the time growing up. My mom help me grow up with rock and roll and Motown. We had a little dance that we did to this song.my mom was the one with rhythm and soul and she passed it down to me I guess. I miss those days. My mom's real sick right now and I miss dancing with her. I hope I can get back to Virginia soon and have one more dance with her before her time is up. You gave me great memory of my wonderful mom. I'll try to hold on to more of those. I might pull out some of my own record albums and listen to it. Anything Motown is that old sound and you will love! Thanks again my dear! boy you make me cry almost every time I listen to you.

Ok, I'm 68 years old, I"ve always enjoyed this song. But I didn't truly appreciate this man's voice until I discovered Pavarotti, thanks to you reactors. Having heard Pavarotti sing, I watched voice coaches appraise his voice and explain how he achieves his full, golden sound, from his low notes to his high notes. So, just now, listening to this song with fresh ears, I heard this man hit his high notes without switching from chest voice to head voice. I have a whole new appreciation for this song and Johnny Moore's talent. And once again, you stop the song before the end. And I don't believe a word you said.

This is what Wikipedia says............."Under the Boardwalk" is a pop song written by Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick and recorded by The Drifters in 1964. It charted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 22, 1964. The song has since been covered by many other artists, with versions by Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Sam & Dave, the Tom Tom Club, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joe Royal, Bruce Willis, Bad Boys Blue, John Mellencamp and Lynn Anderson all charting in the United States or overseas. Crazy story about this song. The lead singer of the group, Rudy Lewis, had died the night before they were scheduled to record this. Rather than cancel the session, Johnny Moore took over the lead vocals. Imagine the strangeness of singing this, and doing it so beautifully, after losing a member. American music history.

Lead singer Johnny Moore took over for Rudy Lewis, who was set to sing this song at the session, but Mr. Lewis passed the day before this was recorded. Today, March 20, 2021, would have been Sister Rosetta Tharpe's 106th birthday. She was THE GODMOTHER of rock & roll. Look on KZfaq for the 1964 video "Didn't It Rain" (preferably the 4 minute 16 second video). Although her main focus was gospel music, her guitar playing was a powerful inspiration to the early rock 'n roll musicians. Check her out. You'll love it.

I love the pride you show and feel when you hear these old African-American groups. Its the same feeling I get when I hear the old Italian-American doo wop groups, particularly from the Bronx, like Dion and the Belmonts, The Earls, Johnny Maestro and the Crests, etc. I don't care what anyone says, Italians and Blacks from the Bronx (and the 4 other boroughs that clearly don't matter 😉) created this genre. Keep it up kid, and feel that pride!
