Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

I have had a drier like yours set a light in canola. The crop went through a pre-cleaner into the drier and it was always near the very top and at the side opposite were the crop enters it. We put it down to two main things. Firstly any trash left in the crop will flow to the edge of the drier. Secondly the crop doesn’t have a lot of weight from above, to help keep it flowing. The flow from that top edge might be slower in any case and you would never be aware of it. We ended up putting a few temperature sensors onto the drier, so that we could see if a hot spot developed in that same place again. It’s also critical that the metal is cleaned properly, so that the crop flows over it easily. Also watch for rusting in the future. We also plumbed a permanent hose pipe too the top of the drier. We could walk on the top of our drier and any plastic soled footwear would start to melt if the drier was on fire, the hose was very handy to cool your feet down.

We had that happen years ago, we ended up bringing a pressure washer up into the dryer to break all the burnt corn off the sides of the dryer. We also used compressed air and cups of dry corn kind of as a sandblasting media to shine everything back up. But starting everything back up you are definitely hyper alert and reactive to anything. It’s as if the dryer needs to earn your trust again to be run without supervision.

Great save guys like you said it's a good thing you weren't farther away. I think Brocks stock went up a few points today!!! So I'm thinking maybe some adjustments on the combine to clean the grain up a little bit, I noticed quite a bit of cob left in it just a thought couldn't hurt. All in all I think you dodged a bullet today. Don't forget to give thanks tonight before you fall asleep! I'd say under the circumstances you did quite well with the video 👍

Great job of capturing everything. Fires are pretty scary. We had a fire in '69 on our farm and lost our main building and all the tools, parts, guns and equipment. Later that evening our barn caught on fire but Dad and I were able to get that one under control before we lost anything. Evidently a spark had gotten into the hay and smoldered all day. It was very lucky I was outside talking with a neighbor about the fire and looking toward the barn at the time. Your fire sure could have been worse. Great job by Phil, Brock and you to get it under control in a hurry. 👍👍👍

You’re correct about the rollers being plugged, if they’re not taking the grain it just sits there and over heats, starting on fire at some point.

I remember the hassle of trying to line up with the small pads on header carts. I use to wrap tape around the right header support bar in line with the middle snout. It helped me get lined up better, but because your header cart is black you'll have to use some color tape or something else. Good luck this fall...

I had a kitchen fire from a coffee maker shorting out. I used water because if it wood paper grass or grain water is the best to COOL it down. I kept seeing smoke so I grab the outside hose. We started to pull suff off the wall to find out the smoke was steam from the coffee.

Great coolness under fire guys, you all did great! Good thing it didn’t happen at night when no one was around. Should you contact the grain dryer company for some insight into what effect the fire may have had on the metal or the use of that section re-bridging again do to the heat damage ?

We have a 24/10 grain handler dryer. Every fall we have to clean out the metering rolls and drags underneath the dryer because the dang birds build nests in there and clog it up and everything binds up and won’t run. This year we also found a dead opossum in the drag conveyor also. Isn’t farming fun?

You know what would be some great video? If you had multiple cameras recording from different angles or I suppose just moving the camera would work. But, combining a single row from different angles in slow motion. Combing the top, bottom, inside the threshing and then the tailings. Oh and the grain moving into and filling the hopper. I saw someone record their drill opening a trench, dropping a seed and closing the trench in slow motion and it was really cool. It really clears up how things work.

My thoughts as to why your dryer caught fire. Shutting down the night before with 20+ moisture corn, steam rising up the drying system during the night as it cooled, then the early morning cool temperatures. The weight of the moist corn, environment moisture, how the corn enters the drying system allowed for the corn to brick up The moisture fused the corn together. It's always a series of events that leads to a catastrophic failure. In your case. Unforseen shit happens. It is what it is. I'd take a scotch brite pad and thoroughly clean the burnt sugar. I'd also make a 1/4" rod poker stick to be able to probe that section when restarting as a precautionary measures. Best wishes on a bin busting season Borderview Farms...

Not the kind of excitement anyone needs. Great job minimizing the damage. I guess the reason large elevators typically use trey driers is that they have better downward flow control. However, an other viewer commented on trey drier fires at an elevator he worked at. That was a very scary situation.
