CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lady Elizabeth (Hayley Atwell) explains to Georgiana Keira Knightley) that love with a man can be enjoyable, rather than forced.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Saul Dibb takes the helm for this period drama adapted from Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, documenting the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), a beautiful and clever woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and becomes consort to one of the most powerful men in England. Beloved for her trend-setting fashion designs as well as her political activism, Georgiana's fire and wit make her a beloved figure everywhere but her own home, where her cold and distant husband's control over her is stifling, soon sending her into the arms of a another man -- an act that soon forces her to learn about the brutal difference in the rights afforded to 18th century men and women.

The biography it's based on suggests there may be lesbian feelings going on. Georgiana was completely in Bess' control and there was suggestions about Georgiana's friendship with Maria Antoinette too. However back then women formed intense friendships and sent each other love letters even though they were platonic. So it's difficult to tell if they were just the style of the day or if there was actually anything going on.

I don't know, I think sometimes it was pretty obvious they had romantic feelings for each other. Historians have to say 'allegedly' or 'this may have true' for the sake of academic rigour, but there were probably more women getting together than we imagine.

This was not intended to be a "dirty" scene. At this point, Georgiana wasn't more than about 20 years old and had no sexual experience. While some speculation does have that Bess and Georgiana were lovers, Bess was older, married, and had much more experience than Georgiana had. You have to remember the times were much different than now and even the label of "lesbian" was much different than it is today. It's a terrific movie about a lady who made a profound mark on society of Great Britain.

It’s a deliberately ambiguous scene this. We never really know to what extent Bess is “gifting” Georgiana some much needed intimacy, or seducing Georgiana to keep her in her place as a rival for the economic escape provided by The Duke.

I find it so funny how people in the comments are trying their hardest to explain this so it's not lesbian or at least lesbian coded - my brothers (and sisters) in Christ, when two women are that close, kissing each others necks and feeling beneath their clothes and skirts, it's not JUST going to be platonic relationship, is it? :)
@Dre-yd2xh
@Dre-yd2xh 7 жыл бұрын
i know people are calling them lesbians but she clearly just wanted to show her how good it feels, then at the end there was one attraction in her face (the one touching her), she was mature about it and just got up and left, thata just something females can do and it not be gay
@mobydicki9060
@mobydicki9060 7 жыл бұрын
Females don't touch each other without being gay, and if they do then they're not doing it because they're friends anymore, but because there's a certain attraction between them that can lead to experimentation or love, etc. While it is true that women are phisically closer amongst each other, the idea that they "experiment" sexually amongst themselves is not at all true. Friends don't touch each other or experiment with each other for the sake of "friendship", that's an idea derived from pornos for men that want to picture that fantasy in their head without having to make the women lesbians.
@Dre-yd2xh
@Dre-yd2xh 7 жыл бұрын
either way, that doesn't automatically mean that there gay, that just the type of stuff females can do without it being that way, if they were really gay they probably wouldn't have started going at it, wouldn't it be weird if a guy didn't know sex with a women and another man started touching on him to show him? straight women can do that type of stuff and whether there gay or not it wouldn't be considered weird, and did they do anything else like that in the movie...no, otherwise it would have happened again

+Duntworee Boutit lol. Listen dude, I'm a bisexual female. I think I know more about how women act around other women in private, especially considering my sexuality. You're that one dude who thinks he knows everything about women, because trust me, you know nothing. Women who kiss each other in public without being gay or bisexual or having bisexual tendencies do it to get men's attention (or even sometimes to swat men off), because one of male's most prominent fantasies is to see straight girls kissing. This is a behavior that is considered sexy by men, but the women themselves do not consider it natural. In fact, once you get to a certain age, it's considered immature and inappropiate by most girls, because if the girl is homo or bisexual it's ok. But if the girl is straight it shows she's only doing it for the attention. In the past, girls would do this with me constantly because they knew I had no problem kissing women, and it was quite awkward. Not at all "oh, we're doing it because we're friends". You could feel the heterosexual girl shrink inside, completely weirded out by the situation, or paying more attention to the reactions around her than to her mouth-to-mouth with you. Since you knew the chick was straight, you felt awkward too. And that's how you could identify really curious women or bisexual/lesbian women from girls who only wanted to "look sexy" in front of others. Women are really good at pretending too, so they would pretend to engage in flirtation or sexual behaviors with other girls without actually meaning to. Sometimes, when alone at the club and wanting to get rid of men who didn't leave them alone, some of my friends would do that with me, and I would make a mental note inside my head that it didn't mean anything and it was all just for show. I know for sure that from those hetero girls none of them went to bed that night with me or any other of their heterosexual friends and experimented sexually. And I was very sexually open, they could have done it, no strings attached. The ones who were truly hetero and not attracted towards me in any shape or form didn't. When a girl is horny for you, it means she's attracted towards you. When a girl genuinely wants your vg or your tongue down her throat, it means she has either a tendency or a curiosity or a straight female boner for you. When a girl enjoys sex with you, it means she's either sexually ambiguous or sexually curious. But it doesn't mean she's doing it because she "trusts you as a friend". Privately, between girls, since there's no need to impress the men around, women don't do this type of shit unless they themselves want to and feel curious about it. All the girls who have experimented with me because they wanted to, have clearly had a certain curiosity and a certain attraction towards me. I haven't hooked up with simple friends or best friends. And they wouldn't hook up with me. Do we talk about sex or masturbation? Yeah, same as men. But we don't practice it amongst each other "just because we're friends". And yes, are there bisexual, lesbian, bi-curious, homo-curious women out there? Yeah. They sometimes decide that they're heterosexual in the end and stop hooking up with girls the moment they get a boyfriend. Or even bisexual girls have moments in which they only feel attracted to men. So, yeah, there's a group of people who do it. There are girls and girlfriends I've had who were curious about their sexuality and therefore started experimenting with me. They eventually stopped being curious and went back to only dating men. But during the experimentation-time there was a clear sexual curiosity behind it, a clear sexual attraction. My truly straight friends would never get into something like that with me, despite the fact that they let me sleep in the same bed as them and even saw me naked many times. And I would never go there with them, despite the fact that I am clearly sexually experienced with women, because I don't see them as sexual partners. If one of my heterosexual friends came to me one day and said "I have difficulty achieving orgasm while masturbating/with my boyfriend" we would talk about it. But I wouldn't go down on her or touch her or rub myself against her and tell her "this is how you do it, enjoy it". That would mean we're having relations. My heterosexual friends would never experiment amongst each other, it would be weird for them, because they're not attracted to their own sex for a reason. It would be like two men experimenting sexually with one another. I'm pretty sure there are bi-curious or homo-curious men who do it. There's certainly a group of them out there. But heterosexual men don't do it generally. Because if they're heterosexual they have no desire to experiment with a sex they're not attracted to. As girls we're often misinterpreted because we are phisically closer to other girls than men. Girls kiss each other on the cheek, the neck, the ear, etc. Girls hug more often. Girls hold hands. Girls dance really close to each other and touch each other a lot. Girls even have the ovaries to size each other's boobs sometimes. Those things aren't sexual or romantic when it comes to girl-behavior. But touching each other pleasurably, undressing each other sensually, experimenting with sexual pleasure, kisses, etc, that IS sexual. And it's something usually reserved to girls who share an attraction for the other. There was a time in which I believed what you believed as well. I danced with a friend one night, we got really hot and heavy and we ended up having sex and I just thought "this happens between friends all the time, right?" Eeeh, wrong. The girl was attracted to me from the moment she met me. And I was clearly a bisexual woman who hadn't even realized I was attracted to women and wanted them as sexual partners because, just like you, I thought those behaviors amongst "friends" were "normal". After that I realized there's a lot of misconceptions about female sexuality. A lot of exacerbated myths about it that come from men's own perceptions and fantasy. Sexual behavior is always sexual behavior. A pair of friends who have any type of sexual relationship with one another have entered sexual behavior. Sexual behavior instinctively comes from attraction. So if a girl is truly engaging in sexual behavior with another girl it means there's sexual attraction between them. Now, I don't know if this means that these two chicks are bisexual or bi-curious (because since they're talking about men, we have to assume that in the extremest of cases they're attracted to both sexes) but it shows a certain kind of sexual experimentation that goes beyong "I'm gonna help you coz I'm a good friend". Otherwise if that wasn't the intention, the director was pandering to a male fantasy without even noticing.

***** 1. You seem to think that you know all about women, or presumably more about women than any other man (which is what most men think), based on the fact that you are utterly completely sure heterosexual women experiment sexually amongst each other and you are even willing to contradict a bisexual WOMAN on this issue. For starters, heterosexual women with the desire to have homosexual experiences is, in itself, a contradiction. Let me ask you something: as an heterosexual man, do you feel the need to sexually experiment with other men? My guess to your answer would be no (but I don't claim to know all men, maybe some heterosexual men have no problem "screwing around", as you'd put it). From the experiences my queer male friends have had (bisexual and homosexual) if you do happen to engage in homosexual behavior, then you are no longer considered a 100% heterosexual, even if later on you decide to establish yourself in a heterosexual relationship. Are there men out there who engage in this type of behavior? Yes. Bi-curious men exist. And most bisexual or even homosexual men were certainly curious at some point. Same thing happens with women. But if you saw a man experiment with another man, you'd no longer consider him completely heterosexual. Even if it just happened once. Even if he finally decided that he was either completely gay or completely heterosexual. There was a time in his life in which he was either hetero-curious or homo-curious. And that's the truth about sexuality. Same thing happens with girls. Though some heterosexual girls will pretend to engage in flirty/sexual behavior with other girls, the moment they do it for real they are not considered/or consider themselves a 100% heterosexual. Because they are engaging in queer behavior whether they like it or not. So, yeah. Women engaging in sexual behavior with other women does not mean they're going to choose a completely queer lifestyle in the end. But just the act of sex between two women is ALREADY homosexual. There's nothing heterosexual about it. By LOGIC, when you are a girl who has sex with another girl, you ARE ALREADY ENGAGING IN LESBIAN SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. So the phrase "girls can have sex without it being gay" makes no sense. It's a total fallacy. Sex between two women is ALREADY GAY. That's what defines GAY SEX. 2. "Sexuality does not always have to be sexuality." WHAT?!!!! That makes no sense. Sexuality IS sexuality. Wait!! A chair does not have to be a chair. It can be confused with a table, or the floor. Yeah. That's logic for ya!! You mean "sex does not always mean sexuality"? You're right. Sex with one person does not define your sexuality. I am not straight all of a sudden just because my nowadays sexual partner happens to be a man. Sexuality is not simple. It can take many forms. Does you being a man and having sex with a man mean you are homosexual and will be for the rest of your life? No. But it DOES mean that you had an homosexual EXPERIENCE. And that, if you agreed upon having it, if you enjoyed it, means you had a phase in which you were at least homo-curious. Meaning, you wanted to experience that side of sexuality. Maybe in the end you made the conscious decision that it was not for you. But you still lived it. It was part of your identity for a moment, a year, a period of your life. Sexual experiences shape your sexuality, they don't define it. Your final sexual preferences do NOT have to be dictated by your sexual past, of course. But that sexual past is PART of your sexuality. So: are there women who had lesbian experiences and yet are NOT gay or bisexual? Of course there are many. We could call those sexual experiences something along the lines of "curiosity"/"tendencies"/"experiences". However, were they sexual? Are they part of that person's sexual history? Yes. They are. They count as sex. The people they had them with count as sexual partners. 2.1. Are you implying, by making fun of my sexuality and supposing that I am very young which usually translates to sexually curious, that bisexuality is not real? Because I can guarantee you I have lived 10 years as a bisexual. Even if one day I marry a man or a woman, I would still consider myself a bisexual. Bisexuality is real. And your reaction to it tells me everything I need to know about you. 3. Curious behavior DOES exist, as I formulated in my comment. But it doesn't generally exist amongst women OR MEN who are a 100% sure of their heterosexuality. Curious behavior is very normal amongst men AND women, especially at a very young age. You have all the sexual possibilities in the world when you are young, and experimentation usually happens as a consequence of that. While it is true that women usually have more free license to experiment with other women, because male experimentation comes with a very heavy stigma, the question only arises if you genuinely feel curious about your sexuality. Curiosity already poses a question to you, about whether you are queer or straight. It already flirts with the question of homosexuality. Curious people are still in the limbo of "am I queer, straight, or both?". So curious women who in the end decide that they're straight still have a record of having engaged in homosexual behavior. That's not going to change. A truly heterosexual woman has NO NEED of this. 3.1. A woman who wants to have sex with another woman is SEXUALLY ATTRACTED to that woman. This is logical. It's valid for homosexual couples as well as heterosexual couples. If you are sexually attracted to your own gender, you have a certain queer-element in you. Because otherwise, you wouldn't be. It's not like gay men or lesbian women want to have sex with the opposite sex. Because they are NOT ATTRACTED towards those people. But sexual attraction IS a part of sexuality. Your sexuality is basically defined by whom you are attracted to. So, if a girl had a phase of her life in which she had sex with various women, we could say, she had a bisexual/lesbian tendency in the past. If she still has that, she cannot call herself heterosexual. Because she's not only attracted to men. She's attracted to women also. 4. As I said before, with the pretenders, it's hard, especially for men, to recognize when a girl is pretending to like or engage in sexual behavior with females just to attract men to her. I've even seen instances of women pretending to have sex in front of a man. Like two actresses, they knew their roles and how to play them. It was no different for them than Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall kissing each other's brains off in Brokeback Mountain. If you know women as well as you claim you do, you should know, women all deserve an oscar for their performances in life. They can pretend to have orgasms, cry, be angry, be virgins, not be virgins... in the same way, they can pretend that they're into girls. For men, who usually don't have to decode this, because seeing two girls make out is all they need, this just shows a simple truth that's been generalized for the female gender: that women make out and have sex amongst friends for the sake of it. This is a stereotype. And countless discussions amongst bisexual, lesbian and heterosexual girls about this issue HAS lead to one conclusion: that this stereotype is based on a male fantasy and not on the truth about female sexuality. That women, just like men, can be curious, can be in a phase of discovering themselves and can have very valid lesbian experiences. But that it's one thing that this happens for real and it's another when women pretend to do it. THIS is not claiming to know all women, this is rather female common knowledge and wisdom. Same as with periods, PMS, dress-codes to impress boys... y'know, between us girls, we have certain universal truths. 5. You say you're only talking from your own experience (or as you'd say, observation). And it shows. You're an outsider looking in. And to outsiders, certain things they see may seem universal truths. To the insider who is part of that universe the outsider is merely observing, things are not what they seem. Abductive reasoning doesn't work in this case. "If it's said that girls do this and I've seen them do it, then they do it". No. It may look like it, you may have heard of it. That doesn't mean it is what it seems. As a straight male, who's mainly in touch with the straight male/straight female demographic, I can tell you still don't know a lot of things. As a bisexual female who's not only more in touch with the female demographic than you (because your comment about you knowing more women than me is just stupid. I am a woman who dates women. My experience with the female gender is faaaaar greater than yours, simply because if you put some common sense into the mix, you'll realize that it's not only my sexual orientation, but also my identity as a human being. I lived my entire life as a female. Surrounded by females. I learned things about females you could never hope to learn.) but with the queer demographic in general makes me more knowledgeable of these sorts of things. Why? Because common sense, years of experience and group support amongst ourselves has created a certain database. A certain general knowledge of how queers work, how female heterosexuality works, and how curiosity works. You, a straight man, from a mainly straight world, could not know this stuff. Same as me, a bisexual woman from a mainly female world, don't pretend to know EVERYTHING about heterosexual men. But I DO know more about women, both heterosexual and queer. Because I am part of both those worlds. You used the phrase "don't pretend to know all women" and then immediately, ironically even, pretended to know more about women than me. A woman. You even went as far as to give the women "reading our comments" advice about their sexuality. So, you see, the irony of your comment is there. That's why I told you, YOU are being that guy you are advicing other guys not to be. "Don't pretend to know all women" is usually a phrase used to put guys in their place. Because they are NOT women. They don't understand women that well. ANd, yes, I don't know ALL WOMEN in this world, but as a woman who on top of everything also happens to DATE women, I have more insight into female psychology and female mentality and female common-sense. It would be like a caucasian pretending to know more about black people than black people themselves. Unless you wore a dress and were "one of the girls" with your female friends, I hardly believe you know more women than I do, or in fact, that you have ANYTHING useful to teach me about the misconceptions of female sexuality. And yeah, arguing with you about something like this IS like a climate-change-expert arguing with a republican about climate change. Because republicans, just like you, think they know more than the experts, just based on "observation" and the fact that "the day was cold, therefore the earth couldn't possibly be getting warmer".

***** Strawmans, ad-hominems and ignorance about sexuality to counteract your butthurt because you lost this argument. Nice. "You seem to now everything about all girls sexuality and psychology" And you seem to be convinced that bisexuality is an innability to choose your own sexuality. So, that, in itself, shows your ignorance and your double standard. Sure I am being the judgemental one because I say that sexual curiosity is a thing when you clearly want to catagolate it under "normal heterosexual behavior". But you are the open-minded asshole who attacks bisexuality simply because it's not something you understand. And by your own comment about "Intelligent people don't speculate though" all of your points in all of your comments have been speculation. The idea that "there doesn't need to be a guy present for girls to screw around" was pure speculation for example, because if you weren't present that means you have no proof of this. It's speculation. Intelligent people ALWAYS speculate. Intellectual theories of ANY kind are based on speculation. But in my case, they're not only based on that, unlike yours. They're based on experience. I don't know all women, but I AM a woman, and have lived my entire life amongst females. And the truths about pretenders, sexual curiosity, etc... I have LIVED them. So I understand them better than you. I, as a female, live under a certain code known almost as a universal truth for every female. ANd that code states what I've stated. That heterosexual girls can pretend in order to make men hard. That girls can be phisically closer to other girls. But that the moment they engage in real queer behavior, they're being queer, not heterosexual. I talked about curiosity, tendencies and none of them being the direct correlation to what sexual preference you choose in the end. So in the end I'm the one saying that not because a girl has sex with another girl will it mean she's a lesbian for life. All girls are different in that sense. I'm not coming at you because of that: I'm coming at you because you have a wrong, monolithical hetero-centric idea about sexuality, and strive to eliminate queer behavior and invalidate it under the guise of it being "normal heterosexuality". As if sexual behavior between females could never be considered queer because they are still heterosexual in some way. Sexuality in itself is never so monolithical. Not everything revolves around heterosexuality. In fact, ancient greece had almost everything revolve around male bisexuality. But you wouldn't believe that because to you bisexuality is simply "confusion". I am not assuming anything about you by saying this: I'm simply reflecting what I see. My main purpose for writing these long comments is to educate. And you could call it counterproductive because I'm on a platform like youtube, but that doesn't give you room to speculate about my life and my relationship with the outside world. You, who clearly know very little about sexuality and female psychology, are the one who maybe should consider going out of your bubble and start paying attention to real females, try to understand them, instead of just fapping to them kissing each other. PS your balls must be really little, so I have no interest in them.

Nahhh, that's reaching. If she didn't care about the consequences of setting up Georgianna and Charles together, then she wouldn't have gone with Georgianna into hiding to support her while delivering her baby. It was mainly Bess' initiative that brought G and Charles together and she knew that. She did it as a sign to G, that she still considered her a friend and wanted her to have at least a SMALL chance of true romance and affection... Just as she's demonstrated here in this scene clip.
