CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Georgiana (Keira Knightley) realizes that The Duke (Ralph Fiennes) has slept with her one true friend.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Saul Dibb takes the helm for this period drama adapted from Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, documenting the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), a beautiful and clever woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and becomes consort to one of the most powerful men in England. Beloved for her trend-setting fashion designs as well as her political activism, Georgiana's fire and wit make her a beloved figure everywhere but her own home, where her cold and distant husband's control over her is stifling, soon sending her into the arms of a another man -- an act that soon forces her to learn about the brutal difference in the rights afforded to 18th century men and women.

It really is sad. I hated the Duke so much.. He married her because of her social climbing parents arranged their union. It wasn't based on love. She is beautiful, kind, and smart. He kept her as a front to keep up appearances and his reputation while making her feel so lonely in his home. This is what happens to women in the past and present day. They only serve a purpose to keep face in public meanwhile their husbands continue to cheat.

Everybody's rightfully praising Kiera's acting here, but I'm amazed at Ralph's acting as well. He doesn't say a word when Georgianna's chewing him out, but everybody can practically read his thoughts through his expressions and body language. He knows that his actions have seriously hurt her (not to mention all the other women he slept with previously), he knows that he deserves all of what she's giving him, but he's still too proud to take responsibility, and he still actually believes that his actions are justified.

And my goodness is she stunning. What a beauty AND so very talented. If it makes anyone feel any better, their marriage was nowhere near as miserable as depicted here! It’s almost certain that Georgiana and Bess were lovers, but thanks to the destruction of most of their letters during the Victorian era, we’ll never know for certain. Bess was certainly jealous of Georgiana and desperate to be like her, but whenever she overstepped the mark, the Duke - or “Canis”, as he was nicknamed - had no compunction about putting her in her place. Bess was actually absent from the Devonshire circle for long periods, and William and Georgiana grew much closer after she returned from Europe, where she’d given birth to Eliza Courtney. She nursed him through his gout, and even suffered a miscarriage later on, suggesting that they were still intimate. As she’d already produced the longed-for son and heir by then, there was no reason for the Duke to carry on sleeping with his wife unless he wanted to! When she died, he was so grief-stricken he locked himself in his room and then suffered a kind of breakdown. He didn’t marry Bess until four years after G’s death.
@cocodakilla

Nope lol he still married bess. And georgiana had to nurse him because of the times
@amasion2882
@amasion2882 4 жыл бұрын
The rumors about G and Bess are unsubstantiated. G was very politically active and it was common for detractors of politically prominent women to be accused of sexual deviancy. Marie Antoinette was accused of lesbianism and incestuous abuse with her child. G was friendly with Marie Antoinette and Duchesse de Polignac, so it’s not shocking detractors might accuse her of similar indiscretions. Surviving letters indicate G and Bess shared deep emotional intimacy. As for Bess’s jealousy... I think it’s fair to say Bess mainly envied G’s security and status. Bess actually had a few suitors who Devonshire resented. Bess wanted the security and status of being respectably married and not chronically dependent on the Devonshires. Sadly, for her that wouldn’t happen until her best friend died and Devonshire married Bess.

Keira was perfect here in this scene. Actually, in every movie she's in. I can't believe she's so underrated and people don't really appreciate her as much JUST BECAUSE she's often in period dramas, but look how diverse and complex her characters are. She doesn't need to be flashy and too showy just for people to call her great. Look at her roles in The Nutcracker, Official Secrets, The Aftermath, Misbehaviour, she can communicate just through her body, facial expressions and subtle movements. But of course, film academies prefers the neurotic, flashy and screaming women on screen. She's so talented and the critics knows it, the award-giving bodies are a bunch of politically-driven mad men hypocrites who only goes for bandwagon and let politics get into them to award winners, even to nominate them.
