CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Georgiana (Keira Knightley) is forced to hand over her illegitimate child to General Grey (John Shrapnel).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Saul Dibb takes the helm for this period drama adapted from Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, documenting the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), a beautiful and clever woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and becomes consort to one of the most powerful men in England. Beloved for her trend-setting fashion designs as well as her political activism, Georgiana's fire and wit make her a beloved figure everywhere but her own home, where her cold and distant husband's control over her is stifling, soon sending her into the arms of a another man -- an act that soon forces her to learn about the brutal difference in the rights afforded to 18th century men and women.

Sickens me how Gerogina's husband made her raise his own illegitimate child and of course raised his and Bessie's kids, but made Georgina give her baby away. He was a true monster.

Ideally, they should raise their own children. But what this movie shows is that Feminism is having an open relationship with another man who is not your husband? I know the guy was a miserable cheater, but that doesn't mean you also follow that game.

Susanne Stein In those times there was no way a woman who was married and had a child to another man could raise it. Even if she was single a woman of her class and indeed the middle classes no way could she raise her illegitimate child. Think of the character of Lady Edith in Downton Abbey ( in the 20th century) had effectively had to do the same thing. You may see the Duke as a monster, but compared to other comparable woman who had affairs I think he treated her well. Henry VIII executed his wife, George I imprisoned his wife for life (and I think had her lover executed). There was a huge double standard, and women knew it. Had the Duke been really cruel he would have divorced her, cut her off without any income and not let her see her children She would have been disgraced in society and probably lived as a poor relation at Althorp. As it was she returned to her social position, continued to live the life of wealth and ran up huge gambling debts, which had they been paid in full would have bankrupted her husband. Her daughter was raised by her paternal family, and the Duchess was able to visit her. Although the movie says this was in secret given the artistic licence taken by movies you can take that with a grain of salt. I have very little sympathy for her. At the time this was happening to her, many of my great grandmothers were living much harder lives, if not in actual poverty.

This is not only amazing because of Kiera’s surprisingly amazing acting in this scene, but a lot also because of Rachel Portman’s fabulous music score. The way the music slowly creeps when she hands the baby away, and they way it comes to an emotional, overflowing climax when the baby first cries. I think 50% of the emotion I feel is because of how well the music narrates this heart wrenching scene. Even the music scores from the love scene and the scene where the duke gives Georgiana the letters from her girls when she’s in bath with Charles is AMAZING. It’s does so much story telling on it’s own!

@K M It is actually not a child. It's called embrion, it is literally just fertilised egg. Babies are not being aborted, but fertilised eggs. And according to the medicine, it's not killing. And I think medicine's word is a lot smarter and more knowledgeable than yours. 🙄
@asjadelic4695
@asjadelic4695 4 жыл бұрын
@K M I'm not in for the talk about that, nor do I ever leave comments like these, but that comment really annoyed me. Surely, doctors and the countries wouldn't approve of abortions if it was really a child killing? Where I live, it is approved to abort until 5 weeks, later it's illegal. And I think that's perfectly fine, because in that period it isn't developed to be considered a child. That's what medicine says, and I will always trust doctors who know about this stuff and studied it, more, than you internet and Bible smart heads. We're just lucky you guys arent leading the countries, imagine what a disaster that would be.
@RoyalBlue4486
@RoyalBlue4486 4 жыл бұрын
Asja Delić doctors and most countries certainly do approve of aborting actual children. There have been instances of full term babies being almost fully delivered, and then the “doctor” kills the baby, and finishes delivering it. In cases where the baby is born alive, they are thrown into the trash like garbage. They literally have to lay all the body parts out on a table and sort through them to make sure they are all there. It’s evil and you are incredibly naive if you think there are doctors that would never do things like that.

Incredibly, I learned Sarah “Fergie” Fergusson is in Georgiana’s direct line, a 5x great granddaughter! The child she gives up in this scene, Eliza..one of her daughters becomes a 4x g-gmother of Fergie.

Eliza was never separated from her mother. No infant can survive without a mother. If Eliza were taken from the duchess she wouldn’t have lived her life. But history shows she did have a happy life because she was raised by her mother.

@the great spirit. The baby was looked after very well and was later married into the English aristocracy. Charles Grey later the 2nd Earl Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom also kept a close interest with his daughter and visited her often later in life.

Her younger sister Harriet also bore two illegitimate children, fathered by Granville Leveson Gower. Unlike in Georgiana’s case her husband never found out. She acted as godmother/sponsor to her children who were of course raised away from her. Granville would later on marry her niece- who was also named Harriet- and the two of them “adopted” the children although Granville’s wide never found out they were her cousins.

I’ve never seen this movie so I don’t know why she had to give up her baby… but I cannot imagine a more heartbreaking scenario than having to hand over my baby, hearing it cry and not being able to go comfort it. This scene made me feel deeply sad & anxious. 💔💔💔

Wow, to love your first children so much you'll give up your newest & the love of your life & live with an abuser & his mistress to be with them. That's where she learns there really are "no limits whatsoever" when it comes to what you will do for your children.

Why is this monster Bess stopping Georgiana from holding her daughter? She didn’t have to do anyone’s bidding. Why is she separating a child from her mother? I think she wanted this to happen.
