Port of Spain's Cecil Anderson a.k.a. The Duke of Iron with rendition of the old Trinidadian song Congo Bara, first recorded in 1935 by the Keskidee Trio (Atilla, Beginner, and Tiger). Keskidee or Kiskadee is an anglicisation of "qu'est-ce qu'il dit" ("what did he say?"), call of the Trinidadian bird pitangus sulphuratus.
The prison song Congo Bara is likely an old kalinda from the 19th century, possibly dating from around the time of the 1880s "Canboulay Riots". The creole lyrics refer to a popular inmate, "Prisoners arise, give Congo Bara some light / Give Congo some light, he's the king" etc.
Dukie's rendition is undated but probably recorded in 1957 in New York during sessions for his RCA album "Calypso Carnival".
