Really impressed with some of the sounds out of the Rockman unit given its age!

For clean sounds, I agree. Not for overdrive/distortion. Zoom is so digital and awful !!

Great video, overall the POD 2.0 still impresses me... Just run through an IR or a cab and it still makes wonder.

Award goes to Zoom for the “Best Improvement”. The current MS amp models have come a long way.

Nice comparison. Especially crunch tones have been massively improved in newer devices. But the old ones could get a decent singing lead. I remember using a POD in guitar school learning Satriani. This worked great

It's funny to see the product design choices here - the Rockman (which I owned) was brilliant because it had sliders, switches and led for quick visual cues for adjustments to tone. The Pod also had a bunch of knobs for quick adjustments to parameters. The Zoom looks like they were trying to model it after a car stereo faceplate! The SansAmp was interesting but dip switches were not something you could easily mess with on stage. The Boss amp was obviously a practice/small gig amp with built in effects. At least with that you could drive it with other effects prior to the built in effets. It's interesting to see that each and every device has a specific tonal character that still kind of tells you when you listen to it "Oh yeah, that's a Pod" or "Ah, that's a kidney bean Line 6" because so many people had and used them. If I'd bought the zoom I would have been dissappointed - it had an interesting form factor but the tones weren't too good except a couple of the clean tones. What I remember about the Scholz from owning it is the tone was "better" when you ran it through the half size rackmount chorus delay but a million guitar players had those units and you could tell when they were using them!

This was a fun trip down memory lane, thank you! I had several of the Rockman 1/2 rack units back in the day- Distortion Generator (which had some shared features of the sustainor unit, but was more advanced),Chorus/Echo etc. It always sounded like it was recorded through a telephone, but was smoother and had a better feel than typical SS amps of the time. It has not aged well at all. Also ran the Sansamp as a practice tool,/preamp into big amps and loved the tweakability. I'm not familiar with that zoom unit, but that thing is awful. I've had the Roland COSM amps and they are surprisingly good- not all the models, but most of them- can probably say the same for Line6- when it's good it's good and when it's bad, it awful.

Nice video! I think the Zoom is the only one that legit sounds bad, I could find a way to make the others work. One device that was sadly missing was the Yamaha DG-Stomp. The Yamaha DG tech came out originally in 1997 in the form of the DG-1000 preamp and then later in the DG-80/100 combos and DG-130 head. Not sure when the DG-Stomp was released. I felt the DG stuff was way better than the POD/Flextone stuff of the time. I would love to see a followup with these things vs something more modern like a HX Stomp or Iridium.

Thought the same thing, considering how many people adopted DG's (Holdsworth being the more famous example) I was hoping to see it on this video.

IMHO: The Rockman is the best of all. Period. Not quite versatile as a SansAmp or a POD, but it has *THAT 80s tone* as nothing else! 😎 Maybe a one-trick pony, but exceptionally well-made. And it's 100% analog! 👌 Sadly, there is no available mass-produced nor boutique clone of this gem. Its tone is very hard to reach accurately, even with modern digital processors. Ironically, a convincing (tube) Marshall-type sound is way more easier to get than a (solid-state) Rockman-type one. If a gear maker reads my comment: Instead of filling the market _ad nauseam_ with unnecesary Tube Screamer or Big Muff clones, *please make a nice Rockman clone!* Me and all of us who love that sound will thank you! 🙏🙏🙏

I liked the clean of the first ones, the crunch of the last ones and the high gain of none... haha, if I had a choice I would take the Rockman sustainor, good clean, otherwise, the amp sounds a little canned, and the pod sounds fake, sounding sunken , lacking shine and mid, but giving the best crunch tone

Rockman and Sansamp Classic were reacting more like amps and sounding best. Some fizziness will not be noticed in a mix and will make them sit in better. Then Roland Cube, then POD and Zoom was horrible.

The Rockman and SansAmp are still good. The rest are very poor…POD was OK I guess. I have a SansAmp and GT2 already but the Rockman sounds good enough to buy…I just don’t need one. ;)

I am seriously impressed by all of them, granted some were better than others. It is high-larious that in 2024, guitarists are still cry, bitching, and moaning about modeling. Worst is the fact that guitarists are still lugging around equipment in their murder/rape vans and still think their cool. 😂😂😂 I am impressed by COSM and how well it stacked up.
