I saw this at a music store and after driving the staff nuts for a while I decided I had to have one. I saved up money for months, driving almost an hour several times to “visit” it. These were the very early days of digital so it was exciting…stereo… gajillion effects, I imagined I’d never need another device… I finally bought it, and in my bedroom it was great fun. But trying to tame the beast at band levels was nigh impossible, especially for a noob like me (at the time). I never did quite get it to work in a gigging or even recording capacity, eventually sold it for a song (pun intended…). Ah the good ol days. Seeing what they’re selling for now makes me regret paying with it so early on…

Ahh the memories. I had the 9002 "strap" unit when our oldest was born. She is now 28. It was fun with headphones. Really noisy running into an amp. When I started playing live more often I upgraded to the 9150 rack unit. I used it for years, eventually giving into the hype of the Line6 PodPro. That was a mistake. I sold the PodPro and unboxed the 9150 again, this time running it through the fx loop of my first (of 3 that I would own) Rockmaster preamp. That was amazing! I would have kept that live rig longer except that it had a noticeable lag when switching patches. I seem to remember that the Zoom f/s was connected to the 9150 with its own proprietary cable - not standard Midi or 1/4".

Love it when you do these older units. Very cool. I saw a guy in a 3 piece band which was all guitar music at a bar. He needed someone to run sound and found out I knew how, so oicked me. This was back 20 years ago almost. He had one of these and was using either a VHT head or power amp. He made it sound great though. He rocked. I remembered well becauze I wanted to see him again and I never did. He just disappeared. That Chorus did sound GOOD! Great demo zir. Hope all is well my friend.

This was my first rack effect unit in the 90s. It's a pity you couldn't get the overdrive stuff to work because that was really where it's magic lay -- it was an analog overdrive section with various pedal circuits you could pick from. Really well done and a little over the top. I've been trawling for one in good shape for a while now to put it back in my rack for nostalgia's sake. The 12-step phaser from this box was the sound on Warren Cuccurullo's clean guitar in Duran Duran's Come Undone.

You may have never heard of it, but my first digital unit was an ART SGE Mach II. Not exactly cheap though for the time. ~600 USD back in 1989. It had a lot of cool effects, but it wasn't the most reliable piece of gear. After a year, I had to sent it for repair, which took months. After the repair, it worked for maybe another year before giving up the ghost. For anyone that doesn't know about ART, they were essentially an offshoot company founded by former engineers from MXR here in Rochester, NY.

Half of these modes transform you into Tom Morello, it's amazing. Reminds me of my old Korg AX100G, most stock effects were horrible and unusable except for one patch that sounded EXACTLY like the solo on Audioslave's 'Show me how to live' by just plucking the open B string. Good times.

Listening to the demo through headphones actually sounded pretty damn good. I’ve used some zoom effects in the past and they do have some decent sounds but they also cram a ton of weird and useless effects as well into their units. They did have one box, can’t remember which model, but it had this one great distortion on it which I used a lot.

I still have one of these, but don't use it often atm. The fun comes from combining the dated and sometimes Lo-Fi effects with a quality amp and decent EQ. Combining this gear together is where this unit really where it comes into its own. It can produce some really unique sounds which a lot of modern gear struggles to replicate. If you get the chance to pickup one cheap, jump at the chance. It's a hell of a lot of fun 🙏

Does anyone know how to get the input and outputs at the back of this to work like in this video? I got one of these back in the 90s and always had problems with the input & output jacks at the front and now they don't work at all but I've also never been able to get any sound at all from the rear ports. Is there some settings you have to do to switch them on? In the manual it says the rear input is for keyboards but I can see in this vid that the guitar is not plugged in at the front. Maybe the back jack sockets are busted too? I would sure Love to play with this box one last time

It would have been fun to hear you explore the distortions, but still a cool demo! I managed to find a used Zoom 8080 floor unit a couple of years back. I believe it uses the same technology as the 9030/9050, but I'm not 100% sure... I have no idea how hard those are to find elsewhere, but here in Sweden it was the first 8080 I've EVER seen for sale, counting both in shops (in the nineties), and later on the used market. I just never saw a single one. The magnificent Jan Cyrka did a few short demo clips on a Guitarist Magazine cd back in 1997 (which I still have) and I just thought it was a cool unit. Only took me about 16 years to find one.... Despite having owned the 8080 for a number of years now, I still have only played it very briefly. Once my humble recording setup is ready I will bring out the old Zoom beast and give it a go. I expect it to be... well... very 90s. :)

Wow! I was actually on a hunt for one of these for ages! It was used to record the guitars on NIN- Wish song. That guitar tone is my favorite guitar tone of all time. I can only get close in digital by placing the mic behind the cab. On that album they used a JMP-1 preamp and into just the cab section of that Zoom unit. Can you pleaaase check if there are any cab presets that sound remotely close to that song? I'd be grateful. I dont want to buy one just to not use it. Not to mention i couldnt find one for years here in europe. Thanks! Amazing video

These are getting to be pretty hard to find. Brian Liesegang LOVES the thing and has multiple 9030s and 9050s from what I gather of his online posts. I've been looking around for one for a while and many of the ones that do eventually pop up are pretty trashed, unfortunately. They also seem to pop up on ebay from Japan from time to time, but usually with an asking price north of $150. I'm guessing the scarcity is not so much demand, but just that a lot of them have gotten beaten up over the years or experienced failure as they don't seem to be the most robust things.

Some of those don't sound too bad. I don't think I'll be getting one. I have a Zoom G9.2tt and it really sounds awesome. Has a tube in it that you can blend in its sound. If you get a chance to try one of those I think you'd like it. If you pull off the knob you do have and give me some dimensions on it I'll 3D print you some replacements.

It’s a bit broken I’m afraid. I used one for over 10 years. Avoided using the distortion but the overdrive worked ok as a boost. Great for practice with headphones but like most of the 90s gear a bit meh when it came to live. Some of the 99 presents were bonkers but I do remember one called “via-able” which was very Steve Vai. Came with a decent programmable foot switch. Of its time but it worked and mine still does all of it. Enjoyed this one really took me back. Oh I replaced it with an acute case of pedal addiction 😉

If you repackaged some of those crazy FX as standalone pedals with cool artwork you could sell them for a few hundred a pop on the booteek pedal market IMO

@@LeonTodd the Bomb effect just had a sensitivity factor so when you hit the strings then literally it sounds like a very digital bomb going off 😁. I used it on Journeys “line of fire” for the gun shot interlude. Worked fine and the audience never knew where it came from. Great vid Leon 🤘🏻

Huh, forgot the LFO in the phaser itself has a Random choice. Just a matter of dialing in as gnarly a phase to go with the random LFO, then, I guess.... :)
@NudnikShpilkus
@NudnikShpilkus 3 жыл бұрын
The fake slide thing is proving a bit tough to dial in. Even with the Attack/Decay on the envelope at 1ms and the Attack/Release on the modifier set to zero, the slide is still a bit slow to slide to the correct pitch. :/

Does anyone, who owns/owned the 9002 AND the 9030/9050, comment if the distortion sound of the 9030/9050 is the same as the one on the 9002? I really love the distortion sound of the 9002 for “sentimental” reasons and I’m thinking of buying a 9030/9050 since it’s more powerful.

I have a Zoom 9120 that's actually a very good sounding studio effects rack but the weird trashy stuff this thing does is clearly the magic.

This unit was used by MONSTER Bass players back then... Try listening to Nico Assumpção's Bass solo ( Brazilian guy who played like Patitucci, BEFORE Patitucci...)in the 80's ( Put Larry Coryell and Nico Assumpção on KZfaq )and You Will see what zoom9030 could do (live). 😊👍👍 Peace !😊
