The Egyptian Hakim service rifle was a license-produced version of the Swedish 6.5mm Ljungman AG-42 semiautomatic gas impingement rifle. Egypt changed several features such as the grasping grooves, a removable muzzle brake, an adjustable gas system, and no cleaning rod. Some references will state that the Hakim was used in the 1956 Suez Crisis, however, upon review of available serial numbers on the current market, it appears that less than a few thousand Hakim rifles even existed in 1956. From observations of archival media from the war, it appears that Egypt had a much great stock of Soviet SKS carbines and Czech Vz.52 rifles from the 1955 Czech Arms Deal which rippled across the Middle East as one of the largest arms deals in the region during that time period.
Egypt also brought some of this surplus in addition to Hakim rifles to Yemen where Nasser was supporting the Yemeni Republican forces with both troops and materiel for much of the 1960s, otherwise known as "Egypt's Vietnam Conflict". Today we still find Hakim rifles in Yemen and Iraq, in addition to a large surplus market in the United States where complete Hakim rifles can be purchased for under a thousand dollars most of the time.
Hakim production appears to have overlapped with Rasheed carbine production in the mid-1960s, after which it was discontinued. Some sources estimate total Hakim rifle manufacture between 70,000-80,000 rifles, the highest serial number observed by the author in the 50,000 range.

My experience (800ish rounds so far) with my Hakim is nearly the total opposite of the one shown here. If you engage the safety before loading, the action is incapable of closing. If you've recently fired to empty, the magazine's follower pushes up on a lug that locks the action open - extremely similar to that of an AR. At this point, even with the magazine loaded or completely removed, the rifle will rely on this last-round-bolt-hold-open to remain locked open. I suspect the rifle used in this video has a heavily worn hold-open lug or bolt/carrier locking latch. Hell, maybe both. At least on my rifle, the only way to dislodge the bolt/carrier from this lug at this point is to tap the rifle's butt against the ground. I've tried many different ways to cause "Hakim thumb" with my particular rifle and I simply can't get it to happen. When doing *anything* other than pulling the trigger, engage the safety. Easy. I also have zero issues getting the rifle's original-issued mag in or out of the thing. Sure, the latch is annoying, but I suspect that the magazine used in this video is slightly deformed, causing friction. I also have an aftermarket magazine that was tight at first but became just as smooth after a single range trip. Both are easily removed by using my right hand's - my firing hand's - index finger knuckle while holding the gun's receiver with the rest of said hand. Both mags drop free, yet have zero wobble when actually in the gun. My rifle doesn't at all feel like it's about to come apart under recoil. I've anecdotally never actually heard of a Hakim that needed more than the lowest gas setting to run. And at this setting they seem to run very mildly. I bought a new-production gas key from a guy off of Gunbroker right after buying the gun itself, and there always seems to be someone selling them there. tl;dr Hakims that have lived less interesting lives than the one shown here actually run quite well, albeit with a manual of arms that requires some attention to detail.

I bought my rifle in 1991 for $95 to me it is a great gun so much so that I have actually upgraded my rifle to use mg13 machine gun magazines I also have mounted it with a bipod because of the weight it kind of looks like some kind of crazy looking BAR type light machine gun I love the setup wish I could post pictures here so that others could see what I had done my rifle has since I have had it worked flawlessly it will shoot all kinds of 8 mm ammo the Hakim thumb is a real thing on the bolt cover there is a handle to grab onto operate the bolt cover, when my Hakim ejects a round it has a tendency to hit that handle and Dent the eight mm brass I have taken a small small rag and wrapped it around the handle so that it would not Dent the brass anymore, that is the only problem that I have had with that rifle since I got it in 1991 I just wish I could post a picture so that I could show others what I had done to upgrade my rifle I'm not sure what the issue with his trigger on the video but I don't have and never have had that issue. It seems that I've been blessed with a super dependable rifle.

lazy video production? Something is obviously wrong with the trigger group for it not to reset. Should’ve done a basic functions check to verify before filming; at least verify it’s functioning properly before filming an info-video. It’s a surplus rifle, so stuff can happen over time. I don’t blame the rifle in this instance, but definitely the folks making this.

It's not a bad gun. I have all 3, and it is an odd design, but considering in like 18 months the AG-42 went from "hey we probably need to look into making a semi auto rifle" to "we have a complete rifle ready to go for mass production." I mean considering it's the first mass produced true Direct Impingement Rifle and it's a very unique system that no one every did before, the designer was a genius. Keep in mind the magazine was only meant to be removed for maintenance, not how we reload a modern AR. The only downside to the Hakim is Egypt designed to use some proprietary clips in the Hakim and Rasheed that no one else ever used, and you have to turn the Hakim to the ammo, because the Ljugman was chambered in 6.5 Sweede, and there's only one loading for 6.5 Sweede, that's why the AG-42 doesn't have a adjustable gas system, where as there's several 8mm loads so they never knew what might show up

I really don't get the whole Hakim/Ljungman thumb meme. I have a ljungman, load it with stripper clips on fire mode and it is impossible for the bolt to close on your thumb. The only way the bolt will close is if the bolt stop is lowered AND the bolt carier is clicked forward AND then pushed back. How can the bolt carrier move that much while loading? Having said that, the bolt will crush the heck out of your thumb if it does happen to be in there while it's closing.
@strayblackcatsmeow
@strayblackcatsmeow 3 жыл бұрын
The safety only protects if on empty, you push forward on the dust cover to capture the bolt carrier. Otherwise the hold open pin is the only thing keeping the bolt carrier from slamming shut. If you load from a clip, the clip keeps the cartridges ahead of the hold open pin. It's when you carelessly load single cartridges that the rim can push the hold open pin down, giving you a bad day.

I remember buying a Hakim when they were around $600. The bolt release was finicky but the rifle ran great with surplus and commercial 8mm Mauser ammo. I recall having a few cases failing to extract and getting stuck like featured in the video. and it was a bear to clear. So, I can see why for many reasons it was ditched but I've also seen a lot worse.

The brass was heavily damaged due to the missing leather wrap (it was not intended to be used to cycle the action). Notice everytime the bolt goes forward demonstrating the "hakim thumb" dangers the GIGANTIC safety switch is In the fire position the box mag is outside of the rifle spare ones were probably not issued as the rifle was designed to function in a specific manner reloaded by stripper clips much like a Lee Enfield just because the box mag is removable doesn't facilitate that it was ever designed to be used with a modern technique its tantamount to complaining about a flintlock for being a muzzle loader that primes from the pan and needs a sharp rock in the jaws like "oh how dare the Hakim be a clone of a somewhat obscure swedish autoloader I hate it". spare mags for these rifles are scarce which lends further to this the box mag was an integrated part not to be removed outside of cleaning or clearing the bolt remains captive so long as that switch is on safe there is a solid metal retention system that raises when the gun is empty the only way your going to get your hand caught In this trap is if you willfully set it and operate the hakim in a way outside of how it was intended let's be honest injury is the result of not understanding the mechanics or studying how it works in a thorough takedown/cleaning of the system. Not perfect, heavy, but I am weary of the only talking point about these rifles being a bite some have incurred why not discuss how well they tame 8mm when someone actually knows how to adjust the gas settings? Why not bring up that they can and have shot circles around M1 rifles of the same age? Why not remark on how scarce they are due to not having a world war to fuel production scale at the end of the day the hakim is a rifle worthy of praise it's a DI battle rifle a design that's both simplistic and complex maybe not the best combat tool but its admirable the Egyptians went outside the box and managed to produce these to such quality they still do their job. I just think youtubers are overly dramatic about something that is a non issue admit you couldn't adapt, played around and had your fingers in the no no zone the bolt did exactly what its supposed to you removed the safeguards (both of them) when it slammed home on that thumb played a game won a prize no need to be 10-ply guns are machines they move as their told to move they need to be maintained.

The Hakim is the ljungman in 8mm. The Swedes supplied the licensing, machines and technicians so Egypt could make their own battle rifle. Contrary to this video, Egypt later looked to adopt an intermediate cartridge and developed the rashid. The Swedes at this time had withdrawn thier licensing. The rashid had the gas impingment but not the muzzle break of the ljungman. Russia supplied the equipment for thier rifle design and Egypt accepted, abandoning the rashid.

Man mine is a DREAM to shoot. Fun, accurate, minimal recoil, good trigger. I figured out how to load and shoot it WHILE I was in the gunshop prior to buying it. Definitely bought a lemon but these are good one's when you can find them and afford them. I dropped $1000 on my beauty. The only problem is that it tears rims and dents casings based on ejection due to bad gas ejection functions and the brass ejector.
@strayblackcatsmeow
@strayblackcatsmeow 3 жыл бұрын
Tearing rims is a sign that the gas valve is set too high, or the chamber or ammo is dirty. The leather tab that was shown is not for gripping as stated, the grips are the two rectangular pads, The leather is on the brass deflector and is to minimise brass denting. Most ammo was corrosive primed and not reloadable so these were removed from most Hakim rifles.

I love my Hakim when it works, mine keeps ripping the rims off cases, cases get stuck or wont extract out of the chamber, it fires but not all the powder will burn ( and im using ppu ammo), but when she does run for a few rounds she is a blast to play with at the range!!! when the ammo shortage ends or when i can find a bunch of them, im going to try and run steelcase 8mm mauser and see how well she prefers that stuff over brass ammo. I have the special tool for the gas port and ive tried to adjust it which worked a little bit. you are right these are very cool and very picky rifles!

As usual when discussing this and the AG42, a lot of misinformation involving thumb eating. It’s total fallacy. You have to deliberately attempt to get your thumb caught to have it happen. Anyone that actually has one of these rifles and approaches the concept without trying to contribute to the misinformation will know this. Same as with the Garand. It’s not that easy to have this happen by accident. But this type of info when it gets started is almost impossible to dispel.

Funny, Iv8888’s video from a couple years ago was great: no trigger problems and the mag extracted and re-inserted flawlessly. Seems like something is wrong in the hakim world when you’re having to manually reset the trigger after every shot - was that particular rifle even safe to use in the first place? Should probably get it looked at before making a video and posting it for the world to see. I blame the rifle less, and more those producing said video...

As people in the business of producing professional firearms videos for youtube, it’s disconcerting to complain about a particular weapon’s shortcomings when those making said video haven’t done due diligence beforehand to verify said weapon was in proper working order prior to making a video for all to see. Average/casual joe may not notice little details like a trigger not resetting when it should; but folks, either professionals or seasoned hobbyists, within the firearms community will immediately see that glaring detail. A simple functions check prior to taping would have resolved this and saved unnecessary trouble. “can’t be perfect” is reasonable when the error is something along the lines of “it was windy that day and we didn’t have another opportunity” or “my shot was off because I had the sights dialed in wrong” - stuff happens, I get it. But a weapon not cycling properly could be indicative of some sort of internal failure which could even be dangerous to the firer if not properly diagnosed and remedied (in this case, it was just the screw being loose, but what if it was a more serious problem?). It’s just a bad precedent to set for those inexperienced folks who happen watch videos like this.
